  1. those have been grown submersed and the others in my tank grow real tall and send flower shoots out all the time. as long as you supply the roots with nutrient, and the plant with good light, they will be happy as ever. the plant completely took over my tank, until i uprooted everything the other day. i was surprised at how fast and how well the plant grows. take a pic of the tank. PS - did the plant reach ok? I couldn't pack it like i normally do, as i didn't have a small box.
  2. how small are they? if they are really really small they may get eaten if they cannot hide - especially if they wiggle around like discus food. otherwise they will not be touched. even pygmy cories are safe with discus. although having said that, I had this one discus that would eat any small fish. cardinals included =(
  3. I dunno. it'll have to be a pretty gutsy fish to take on a shoal of 50 CL's!
  4. gosh you have some pretty fighters! awesome stuff! :bounce:
  5. I agree. they can be mean sometimes.
  6. plecos are so pretty though. with those long fins, and weird patterns.. and over inflated prices  but no seriously... as hans said fire it, and get some algae eaters or something. plecos should be fed stuff like cucumber, so they dont have to eat algae off the glass perhaps there is a chem imbalance in the tank, that is causing the algae to grow in disproportion. your best bet would be to find out what it is, and look at that approach instead of replacing the fish. One fish is better than no fish
  7. LIVE live live!!! :bounce: you need good lighting, good substrate (ferts in the substrate although fish poop is good fert), and good supplements in the water. and once your plants establish there should be no problem. Some red spots eat plants, so you may want to avoid broad leafed plants, but i get mine young and feed them well and never have a problem with plant eaters.
  8. I see it now. do some shops sell this stuff too?
  9. I'm sure you will! do let me know how the project goes on...
  10. is that the one that looks like oxy weed?
  11. holy moly look at that colour! :bounce: That's awesome. Congrats!
  12. as ryan said... supply, demand.bottled water is more expensive than petrol  i love firemouths so if you do have a pair please start a thread about them! :bounce: love the colours and the whole gill flaring thing. its awesome lol.
  13. maybe my fish are.... "different" lol. i only apply what i have learn from books etc to what i see. i must admit i have not done research with the intent to find information that relates to genetic traits etc etc... i had a pair of rams that were good parents and they took care of their kids till the kids were distinctly fish looking.. prob. about 2+cms give or take. like in my bio lectures at uni - we learnt that animals learn some behaviours from their parents. behaviours that arent genetically programmed in. so when i heard that fish that are taken care of by their parents are likely to take care of their own kids - I sit there going ÿep! that makes sense  youre right is saying that "the fishes way of ensuring their genes survive is to select the strongest biggest most colourful mates, and then breed guard their eggs and let their babies survive? Nature would decide which ones are the strongest, smartest and fastest and live to adulthood" but i think the parents... particularly the males ensure that their genes are carried on to the future generations.. we see this in many species, where the male visits many females  and tries getting it on with as many as he can. I'm only applying this to a particular case. but yes, i could be wrong.. its just that the theory fits snugly  sorry for any confusion caused  oh! and when you say "rams are getting so inbred, mass produced and so far away from nature they are loosing instincts" I agree 100%. I just wish we had a ready supply of fresh healthy imports. but i just wish we knew for certain what instincts were learned and which were innate.
  14. and in PT&E someone was selling 2L real cheap. its a bargain! :bounce:
  15. and plants to match what you are giving them.
  16. a triple dose of flourish? itll kill your algae and your fish. its good. double dose if you have to. far too many on here have seen its devastating effects if not used correctly, me included. Oh also. you need to have the right lighting and the right nutrient in the soil if you want a planted tank to work.
  17. sometimes the suppliers run out too  I only have one male left - its that golden one from the POTM competition...no females... they either get dropsy cause i like feeding my fish heaps and they eat like little piglets, or they jump out of the tank  it helps to know which supplier specialises in what fish. Ill ask for the right order to be put through, and there should be more fighters in 2 weeks hopefully  One can only hope... I stopped doing the fish orders a year and a half ago.
  18. you should be able to sell the kribs without too many issues. for firemouths you will need a larger, longer tank as they can get quite large. they also get pretty snappy when they breed - but do so very easily... its not a step up from kribs. since you like rams, have a go at breeding them. they breed easily - but rearing the kids is a bit more of a challenge. Just keep those water changes regular, and youshould be alite.
  19. you took her? i scanned the computers to see where it had gone! small world.... lol i got my self the breeding dwarf flags.
  20. why would you need to clean the sand out. with the runners, you wouldnt have to worry about gasses. Amy Ill send you some dwarf val if you like. freshly removed from my tank =D PM me your address.
  21. MTS is also what we can do to pull NZ out of this recession, lol.. so keep buying them tanks!
