  1. not sure what any of those plants are, as im not up with the native stuff... but i had glosso in my tank, and with 2x20W t8's and 2 T5 HO's it didnt pick on. I also had DIY CO2 and lots of ferts. guess the best way is to try a small bit of each, and get what ever picks up.
  2. i have the best results when i use golden sand as the substrate. they dit many pits in the sand, but only lay in one of them. the others serve as decoys. i also put about 2 -3 ceramic pots in there, occasionally they usedto lay in there too. only ate a couple of batches.. and then the other batches were reared all the way to maturity. they went as far as to have more than one batch in the tank. you may also find that the rams hide the babies in the pots, and come out for food. dont worry about feeding them in this case - the parents sometimes spit food out to the babies... fittest babies survive. this fish guy that taught me a lot of what i know said fish eating their offsping is a genetic trait. they eat the first few batches - theory being the parent fish- mainly the male only wants to pass down the strongest genes to the next generation. when the appropriate batch comes along - the parents will take good care of the kids, and defend them as is needed. there is a whole lot of genetic research to back this theory in other animals but not so much in fish - but i take it that the same applies. it makes sense, even though im sure the fish isnt thinking "hmmm.. if i kill this batch ill have a stronger batch next time" its all about ensuring that the males genes are passed on to the next generation. hope this helps.
  3. that sounds about right. the palmy shop had some on a clearance half price a month ago but they all seemed to vanish in a couple of days. I think one dude bought all the impellors.
  4. fot 7k I'd sit there and measure all the parameters, and report back to you on the clock  :bounce:
  5. cat food or dog food for the bigger fish like aros, large catfish etc.... goes down like a treat.
  6. but dwarf sag will give out runners, and be fast growing... its the best option. that is unless you can get rid of all your plants, and get hold of riccia and get it to grow.
  7. HDD? plus then theres the "i cant move my computer" factor
  8. trust me.. i thought of that. if there were no moving parts, i would have submersed the whole lot in oil, in a fish tank and overclocked the living daylights out of it. sadly as i was told my ideas were not sane, and should be kept in my head. (logic being the voices in my head know me  ). i did see this clear case that i liked - looked like a tank only lacked the swimmingness of fish but with the miracles of science and technology its only a matter of time i suppose ha ha.

to you i can never keep them alive in my tank for more than 3 days max  its terrible.
  10. it is an optional extra. you dont add a lot... more for colour. you can marinade the meat in it if you like... overnight in the fridge, makes the meat softer. real food is made with yogurt - the wussy stuff is made with cream. plus... cream in an already high energy food is a heart attack on a plate.
  11. i agree with ryan. dont think i have ever seen gold X blue... it certainly doesn't come in from an one of animates's suppliers. then again, i havent seen the fish so cannot be certain.
  12. ok. so you heat your oil. add 6 cloves of garlic, brown, and then add onion. brown that too. then you add spices. all of them. now which spices do you add you ask? go to your local dairy, and ask the fella what you need. the odds of him knowing what you are on about are stacked in your favour. so then you cook the spices, and add a little water. stir vigorously and make a paste. now here is where it gets technical. add some tomato puree - about half a can. let it boil... and soon the oil will split out of it. then you add some water, and stir. when the water evaporates, add the rest of the puree. repeat the same step with the rest of the puree. then put your chicken in. and cook that. then you take pataks - its the only half decent one ive tried, and add that to the pot, and you can add some unflavoured yogurt if you like, but please for heavens sake do not add cream  then you put the stove on simmer, and walk away only to return when the stuff is boiling. stirr it a couple of times, and when you are happy with its consistency -EAT AWAY :bounce:
  13. In the land of the blind, the one eyed man is king.
  14. That's because that is NOT butter chicken  If you tried selling that stuff in england you'd get shot dead, lol.
  15. but... but... that is my awesome secret recipe! you can have some when you come back to palmy for a visit, lol. I could tell you the recipe, but then I'd have to kill you
  16. Animates looks like i have some fish to order. Thanks!
  17. me likes the sound of your rams  where you get them from? Mine lasted a year, bred like rabbits, and then died one at a time. peacefully at the bottom of my tank, showing no signs of anything, and were as bright as ever
  18. its all the same when you eat it ha ha. the flour is unhealthy any how. lol. 8)
  19. yeh, you get them here. just the normal blue rams that die after a while for no apparent reason. I personally think its a marketing ploy. u buy them, get a few good months, and then they die leaving you wanting more and more. cycle never ends  . welcome to my world.
  20. can you really? this is the setup ive decided on - can you do me a deal? AMD Phenom II X4 940 quad core 3.0GHz AM2+ A good MOBO that is compatible - but not too pricey. GeForce 9800 GX2, 1GB PCI-Express Western Digital 640GB SATA 7200rpm hard drive 850 Watt PSU, ATX A case
  21. That's like the nicest introduction ive ever read! :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: Welcome to the forums Ben, I'm sure you will find this place very informative. :bounce:

    driftwood

water changes and time will get rid of it eventually. I don't like the tannin look in water cause its all yellow-like you can always let the water go that colour, and if you decide you dont like it - chuck some carbon in the filter and the colour will go away.

    driftwood

some say keep it soaked and keep changing the water in the bucket until it only changes to a faint colour. but that takes too long, so i boil it to make sure, though most commercially available driftwood is already treated; and then I soak it over night, or just put it in the tank as is. Keep that carbon in the filter (or bio chem zorb if youre that way inclined) and the tannins shall not be a problem. what sort of fish do you have? S. Americans love those tannins, and the yellowish water. Does good things for them.
  24. you can if you want to... but really.. if the fish cannot cope with a tap water change with some dechlorinator added to the tank then I see no merit in breeding that fish. I've kept literally thousands of discus over the years, and the only really sensitive ones were the freshly wild caught heckles. Im sure yours will survive a water change. HTH.
