  1. sagittaria crypts swords tiger lotus and other plants with rhizobiums on them (even the hydroponically grown ones)
  2. I just cover everything  heavy root feeders and plants that reproduce with runners are good.
  3. the plant roots convert the nitrogenous compounds and use them up. they also use up a ton of the nitrates. I don't think ive siphoned my tank in over a year... even when i moved house, and shifted the tank - the gravel still stayed there.water changes are far more fun when you dont have to muck around with the gravel  the muck in the gravel are great ferts too.
  4. just grow a million plants in your tank, and you will not need to vac your gravel.
  5. buy more females. they look nice in groups :bounce:
  6. I would always go for the navman. Ive heard tom toms are good too- i know people with them and they haven't complained about them at all. I guess for us wippersnappers, the brand name means a lot, so that's why I'd choose a navman, plus the service is good, and the units are solid as. Slightly more expensive though. Maps are readily available on the net. the legalities of obtaining free copies however leaves a lot to be desired for. alternatively Im sure you can buy maps through navman itself. They are incredibly easy to use with instructions on the screen for even the most novice of users. HTH
  7. HELLO!   welcome to the forums.
  8. IE? use firefox you blasphemous sinners!
  9. are you tempted to eat the fruit? maybe its just the age of the plant. have you had it long?
  10. ok so. every t5 HO Hood comes with these little things: they normally hide in the hood, and you have to pull them out. the hood also comes with suspension cables that are metal. you basically screw the nail on one end to the roof and hang the metal wire down, and hook up the hook to the light, and it hangs like a pro setup. :bounce: I hope that helps.
  11. gimme a sec, ill go take a pic and put it up here.
  12. $13 a cardinal!!!!!!!!!!!!!! they are supposed to be 10 bucks each, and 6 bucks each if you buy 10 or more. jeez... and im planning on moving to Wellington next year!
  13. 2T5 HO's would be more than sufficient. - Edit - and by 2 I mean, 1 lighthood that has 2 tube sockets. just a reminder that the hoods do not come with tubes, so you need to purchase them separately. most shops have 18000K tubes in stock, and those are my favourite but they cost a fair bit - I use them with excellent results. If you want 10000K or 6500K tubes you might have to order them in, or try an electronic wholesaler or a local lighting store. I'm hoping price is not too much of an issue for you. the T5 hoods come with reflectors. I would recommend any retailer that you have dealt with before, and are happy with the service. It would also help if they had the hood in stock, lol. it would also help if you told us how high you wanted the tank to be.
  14. its always on the browser, but i only refresh it when im on the net doing my stuff, or research or something fishy research is important. far more interesting than monte carlo simulations for option pricing that is. :-?   but 2 hours might be an understatement
  15. Ira means no harm  we are all like friendly puppies in this place.
  16. take the kids toes away. wont forget that in a hurry. god reading this article really got my blood boiling. how could any be so thoughtless.. so immoral, and so damn dumb as to not know right from wrong on the most human level?
  17. that sickens me I have no flowers *leaves to pack a sad
  18. a 600mm light will fit in a 800 mm gap. I'd go for t5's and suspend them with the brackets they come with. get a rimless tank made. it will look mint, if you get the right plants.
  19. lol If i did that to any animal I would have got a major whooping. its a pity the parents didn't take serious parenting lessons. then again, being the scum that they are I highly doubt they even care. I'm petrified to see the headlines these kids will make.
  20. It's people like them that make me in support of capital punishment. what sort of society do we live in where we have to live with people that have no respect for life? If they can't respect a little kitten, and decide to hack its paws off with a scissor - how on earth are we supposed to want to live with scum like that? I don't want to live near a serial killer to be... lock em up now. save my tax money for something more productive, and put the scumbags to sleep - I don't want my taxes paying for a warm bed in jail. ridiculous.
  21. sick. those kids and their parents should be put in front of the firing line    \ http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/2380558 ... hacked-off
  22. all of what's going on is pretty normal for a tank that is cycling. I wouldnt use the ammo lock in this case. its more of an emergency use thing. (say you havent done a wc in a month or more). AmmoLOCk converts ammonia into a non harmful form, so your test kit will still show the presence of ammonia. it will in no way affect your biological filtration. least its not supposed to. eye colouration can change sometimes with mood, stress, lighting... sometimes it may appear more vibrant in the evenings. PS- thank you for a very well informed post. :bounce: :bounce:
  23. Thanks. Yes, the hood was slightly higher. I think it measured about 15" - 18" in height. the tank was 4 ft long +/- at the back.
