  1. this was my old (v.old) marine tank. See the hood and how unusually high it is. it had 2 MH's in there. but the rear (and sorry this is the only pic i could find as its from a fair few years ago) was open, and had no wood at the back. there was no glass hood as it would just crack. you can try something like this - but it needs fans. this unit had fans facing the rear, so it pushed air from the surrounding areas and the water onto the MH's and the heat dispersed onto the wall. Mind you the wall was concrete, and painted and was built around the tank.
  2. ask if your LFS can get it in first though. I got a good deal on them cause I have worked at a pet shop for many years now, and figured out what they were on the list as. The plants are on average 2ft high. but i hack the leaves off once i see baby ones sprout, and new ones grow. my old plant is just over a foot high, has 5 leaves that are smaller and lighter green.
  3. Awesome!!!!!!!!!!! now... what you gonna breed?
  4. I think you are underestimating the amount of heat It gets HOT! with computer fans, you can attach a small (240W) PSU to the mains and then comp fans to them, but you will need metal fans as plastic fans will melt. But that's even more electricity consumption. If you like the MH effect, and are not going to use it for the reason most others do- that's for corals, plants, and to ensure enough light gets to the bottom of the tank - just get a nice neat looking halogen setup from your local lighting store, and turn them on for a similar effect. its what i would do. That or t5's But i also have halogens built into my roof.
  5. nitrates not so much a problem. all else is good. nitrite is slightly high, but will stabilise soon. so basically i echo what Mark said
  6. I can't commit to ALL meetings as I live my life by what my wall planner etc tells me. But I can certainly try coming to as many as I can.
  7. If it helps, once the club starts, I can sort a bank account for the club - that is if its needed, as i work in a bank too.
  8. I hear no complaints then? Congrats on your awesome acquisition. I look forward to buying a very CHEAP gold nugget from you in the near future
  9. you can have a lid so fish don't jump out the tank etc. but what ive done in the past is gone for the rimless tank look, and risked the fish jumping ha ha. MH's get really hot, so over time the glass can heat up quite a bit. they can also heat the water up; so are normally suspended at a fair height above the tank. I personally wouldn't go for lids at all- then again I have no cats. I've seen some tanks with a partial covering over the tank in the front, but the MH's were directed toward the back./ I suppose you can always try it out, and see what the temps are like. How high were you thinking of suspending it?
  10. They be good! :bounce: I like the white/blue type. cons- expensive to run, as compared to t5's. they cost a bit too. and you'll probably need to have them suspended above your tank, if you are going for the look I think you are going for. No cover for that tank too, as the glass will not appreciate the heat. But im sure you know most of this
  11. that's cause i disabled the bb code, so he can see how the code is formatted 8) here's his pic.
  12. he sure is. PM him on fishkeepers, he should get it faster I think.
  13. Hate to pop your balloon, but NOt possible. that's because seeds use the cotelydons as a source of energy. its very nice, and red. needs good strong light. a simple pair of scissors and practise will save you a lot of hassle. :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:
  14. he was joking google search CO2 in the planted aquarium. another good site out there is thepalntedtank.net. good information, and im sure you will see something you like.
  15. :bounce: :bounce: awesome stuff! they are such a cool looking fish.
  16. no more harmful than CO2 in our atmosphere. its all in moderation. i dunno if its a type of lilly, its an anubias, lol. i usually hack the leaves off and wait for new ones to grow. the new ones are smaller, and a lighter green. v nice plant. v v v v v slow growing.
  17. then there is something wrong with thelight you are using. I use t5 HO's 18000K and they are the best ive ever seen - exception metal halides. results are amazing, and all plants do well with them. you can use DIY CO2, with yeast, sugar and water or the more expensive but better and more effective CO2 cannister. I'd recommend sag - its a nice plant, and grows well. nice flowers too. Indian fern is also a really nice plant that looks amazing if you set it up well. kauri, oak, cedar, redwood etc have barks to rival the best in the world but I highly doubt they would do well in a tank  If you have a high tank, you can try your hand at anubias hastifoila - read my post and see the pics in this section to see what it looks like. its pretty tree like.
  18. bushy like ambulia, cabomba, rotala, stargrass and hygrophillia polysperma.
  19. yeah, id hate for that to happen. when i finish converting my tank for the africans, he will go in his own mini tank with his favourite bits of wood :bounce:
  20. Awesome, lol. keep us posted on how it grows. when i set my tank up properly, ill chop the leaves off and have something manageable, lol
  21. i feel like my early20's are being robbed if that's all you had to do., a typical day for me"wake up early - get ready, coffee, study, go to uni, study, eat, study, eat, come back home, cook, eat, study, watch tv, sleep. when i dont have uni, its get up, coffee, get ready, go to work (weekends or the weekdays), eat, eat, eat, study, watch tv. if i get free time, then i get to go out. otherwise i have to do my assignments   recently ive had to include "fix computer" in the schedule somewhere or the other, that and keep the parrot entertained.
