HI Jude, I don't have any plants at moment so can't help you. I used to have a small amount of Echinodorus tenellus. Don't see it in the shops at all. You may be able to find Lilaeopsis novae-zelandiae, after all it is a NZ native. It could, under the right conditions, be a subsitute. Often tenellus turns out to be an underdeveloped version of Echinodorus quadricostatus also called the 'chain sword'. Don't know about the other plant

  5. find the button that looks like this ignore this one
  6. Please don't shoot the messenger (Cees ducks, and looks around to see if it is safe). The saltwater forum is I think now the most popular forum on the site! great! To assist the occasional visitor and the novice saltwater aquarist can I ask you guys and gals to please please start a new topic when the topic of discussion changes. That will make it is easier and more useful for everyone to follow what's being discussed. I am aware that the site as a whole suffers from 'topic-drift' and I might post a sitewide announcement/request about it. This is in no way an attempt to muffle the discussion on "you know what". It would be nice to see seperate topics on - koran angle (oops make that angel) - skimmers, keeping stuff alive - buying a business in Auckland (hmmm, maybe on topic) - marine tank, build your tank up slowly - the age of clown fishes etc etc missed opportunities I think Cees ducks again and runs for cover
  7. and another useful one is here http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/viewtopic.php?t=3880

    Fragging stuff

Educate me please, what is fragging ?
  10. See, it's not that difficult.
  11. I'd say all male. Dorsal fin in males is much more pointed than female. And as rob said, colour is a good indication. Behavoiur is another good indicator. If none of them has started making a nest then you can be sure you have all males. Put one female in and a bit of floating plans, hair algae etc and you will have nests in no time. All males will be building and fighting for space.
  12. But why? never mind, I bumped it again and didn't contribute anything useful either...
  13. not a stupid question at all. With the box filters I leave the tops off. The babies get in and munch on whatever they can find in the filter material. The central filtration I mentioned is a system of drilled tanks, plumbing, wet-dry filter, sump and a big pump. A bit more complicated that air-driven filters

  15. Hi Helene, Great to see another person getting into serious guppy keeping. I suggest you do a bit of searching on google. One site I find particularly useful is Stephen Kwartler's http://www.showguppies.com/ esp. the 10 tips page. There are a few others like this with pretty much the same info. I have Stephen's video (Peter, do you still have my copy ?? ). This video will be available to borrow through the new NZ livebearer club. Info at http://poecilia.net.nz/ A good book (and it's in the Upper Hutt Library would you believe it) is the book by Stan Shubel. Greate info. I run my tanks with a central filtration unit. I have use box filters with some filterwool in them as well. Whatever works for you. Main point is to keep the tank spotless. Light isn't important perhaps (jury still out, they may feed better with light). Good light will show off some of the colors mucg better.
  16. I saw that. At least you re-registered :-)
  17. Could be only temporarily. Join the club Ira, forward a motion for a new name and we'll discuss it :-)

    hydroton

I've used it in my hydroponic setup. When soaked for a long time it no longer floats. It's not a bad idea actaully to use it as a layer in the substrate. Probably has the same effect as laterite.
  21. Please read this link/topic for some interesting developments http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/viewtopic.php?t=3627
  22. update: I almost have a 'crude' site ready where you will be able to register interest in joining a Livebearer club of New Zealand. I little more work tonight and it will go live. Think about how/where you will be able to contribute. My guess, we need at least a president and treasurer. What's the (legal) difference between a club, society, association. What are we going to be? Does it matter? Does a club/society need a constitution/set of rules written down? How does that work? Other (fish)clubs in NZ, if you have info to share please email me. What's the best way to start this so that we do it once and do it right. Cees
