  1. I'm glad you cleared that up for me. From the guidelines http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/the-ru ... t3805.html And yes, we have banned people who break the rules. Cees
  2. Thanks for that. Where to buy 1-wire weather station starter kit ? Cees
  3. Rocketman, Tell me more about your weather station. What do you use, where did you get the equipment etc etc. (did I mention I want one) btw, http://www.tokaanuskihire.co.nz/ I love that shop. We go skiing for a week every year and stay at tokaanu. Was there 4 weeks ago. Great people at the skihire shop. Highly recommend them. Cees

Ok, here we go, this is hard ..... Hi, I'm Cees and I'm addicted to fish. I have: - 25 tanks dedicated to guppies - 1 tank with goldfish and apple snails. I have space and a need for more tanks. Because I can resist buying fish at a petshop (I only need guppies) I don't think I have a problem. Cees
  6. Perhaps this should go somewhere at the top of this forum. Seems important. I've made the "Letter to New Zealand Hobbyists" into a webpage for easy reading. http://www.fnzas.org.nz/letter/ Here is my understanding of what you all have to do for each species of fish you own. 1) check the species list pages here. Use the alphabetically ordered menu (by scientific name). E.g. for guppies I would go to http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fish_study/genus_p/ (Poecilia reticulata). If the species has been marked as done you don't need to go further. But, if the species hasn't been marked as done ..... 2) Take a (good) photo of your fish. 3) Print the photo, either black/white or color (preferred). 4) Write the scientific name of the fish on the photo. Write the date on the photo. Sign it and if you are not the owner of the fish (eg you took the photo at a petshop) get the owner to sign it as well. 5) Download the Fish identification form From Here 6) Print the form 7) attach the photo to the form, enter all required details including a reference to a fishbook or www.fishbase.org for identification Don't forget to write the scientific name on the form as well 8 ) Send the form+photo and an electronic copy of the photo (on disc/cd/dvd) to one of the three people mentioned here

  8. I understand this to read .. fill up container above the tank (with a pump) to a certain level and than surge (siphon) the whole container content down to tank all at once. Not as difficult as you think. Chemists use this technique all the time in what's called a 'soxhlet extraction apparatus' Here are a few links. Could possible be adapted to what you require. I think all you need to look at is the syphon arm. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soxhlet_extractor http://yarchive.net/chem/soxhlet_extractor.html (crude drawing but explains it)

chimera posted a the link to his 'for sale on trademe' here. I assume to alert the readers of this forum to this. I have been allowing this on previous occasions from other users. Please keep discussions on in the original topic in the 'Private trade and exchange' forum not here.
  10. I've just downloaded the trial version. Will evaluate this and write a review to be posted here :-) Cees

    guppy drop

put them in seperate tanks/containers at the time they are about to give birth. They will produce all the babies in one session. If you keep the females all in the same tank than many of the fry will be eaten by the others. The assumption that blond produces light and black produces dark is not necessary true.

    Brine shrimp

What follows is copied from the instructions printed on the cans of brineshrimp I just imported see http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/premiu ... t7067.html (sorry, all sold) I'm sure brineshrimpdirect wouldn't mind me repeating this here. --------------- Hatching intructions for best results: 1. Place hatching cone or similarly shaped vessel in well lit area. Cone should be semi-translucent for ease of harvesting. 2. Fill cone and adjust salinity to 25 ppt (parts per thousand). Optimum temperature 28 C (82 F) 3. Add cysts at the rate of 1 gram per liter. Provide adequate aeration to keep cysts in suspension. 4. Depending upon water temperature, cysts should hatch in approx. 18-25 hours. 5. After hatching, turn off or remove aeration and wait several minutes, newly hatched nauplii will settle to bottom of cone. 6. To harvest, siphon nauplli from cone as they settle. If equipped, open valve and gently drain nauplii in to a fine mesh sieve. Rinse in clean seawater before feeding. 7. Tanks and surrounding area should be cleaned and disinfected routinely. Do not store above 10 C (50 F) ------------- There you have it. Directly from the supplier. My comments. - Coke bottle works fine as a hatching cone as described here and here - 25 ppt water is important. I make up a bucket full with marine salt from petshop . You can use seasalt from grocery store but will need to add bakingsoda and perhaps a little magnesiumsulfate or you can dilute natural seawater. Perhaps one of the salties can give you their wastewater when they do a water change? Get a gadget that will measure salinity. I don't have a link here but every petshop should be able to sell you one. - Do not use an airstone for aeration. Bubbles will be too small. The aeration should be vigorous. - Harvesting, let them settle in the dark for a few minutes (throw a towel over it). - You need a fine sieve or net, nauplii are very small. I use a special brineshrimp net like this one http://www.brineshrimpdirect.com/equip_net.html - Keep hatching area clean, disinfect regulary like they say. - Use only good quality brineshrimp cysts. I only use premium grade, because I don't like to have to separate nauplii from unhatched cysts. - Keep only what you need to hatch in one week in your fishroom in an airtight containter (in the fridge if you can). Store the bulk of your supply in the fridge or freezer. Keep cysts container airtight, dry and cold. If the brineshrimp still don't hatch after this you might as well throw them away because they've gone off. my 2 cts Cees
  13. Interesting stuff. With encyclopedic information like this please quote your source(s). I found several 'copies' of part of this here is one http://www.encyclopedia.com/html/b1/bichir.asp There is nothing wrong with collating info like this. Please do, it's valuable for the fnzas site users. But, quote your source(s) ! Cees
  14. Correct my if I'm wrong but I don't think New Zealand uses chloramine. Cees
  15. Try to keep it at one species per topic. Use the species name (latin or common) in your topic title.
  16. Of course we'd like to see lots of photos from the New Plymouth 2005 conference.
  17. Conference 2005 starts today in New Plymouth. Unfortunately I won't be there. Those of you who are there and have access to internet, please keep us informed :-) about the proceedings. Cees
  18. HI All, I need an original photo of Barclaya longifolia Anyone have that in their tank and can take a photo ? Cees
  19. If that is going to be a problem let me know and I'll host it. Cees
