  1. Click the "add filter" button.
  2. As soon as you get a filter that creates a bit of surface agitation you will find that film will not occur. Yeah that's what I've done, and I guess the user could further reduce the height of their tank dimensions to take gravel depth and other things that displace the water into account. But then again it's probably not even worth taking these variables into account as the tool is only there to give an estimate.
  3. Random question here, but when the app looks at the dimensions of the tank does it take into account that the tank isn't filled to the brim? If so what does it compensate by?
  4. It's a little "Elite Hush 20" or something a long those lines. It was leaking from where the impeller fits into the bottom of it, the seal is broken. I've used silicone to seal up the gap just waiting for it to cure now.
  5. Mainly the glosso and lilaeopsis mauritana. But there is also rotala, hygrophylla (couple variaties), ludwigia, and quite a few others. Does that help at all?
  6. I've done a bit of reading through the plants forum and from what I can tell you need 3 main things to glow plants well. - Light (I have 4x 54watt T5 tubes) - CO2 (Have bought some flourish excel) - Ferts. (??) My questions is: Is the waste that fish provide enough on it's own to cover the Fertilizer category? If not which is a good liquid fert to use in combination with flourish excel and good light?
  7. I totally cleaned out one of my tanks today and apparently I did something when I put the HOB filter back together as it is now leaking. I'm guessing I need to find some new seals or something. I've put the media inserts into another tank of mine that is running a sponge filter they are just floating about, will this keep the bacteria alive? Cheers, Scott
  8. Thanks. They have been in the tank for 2 weeks tomorrow and I'd say most of the plants have managed at least a small amount of growth. I'm beginning to notice the early signs of a green stringy algae and brown algae will the flourish excel help with the algae at all?
  9. Would someone be able to provide me with an indication as to when one should start dosing with Flourish Excel in a planted aquarium? How soon after initial setup? **EDIT** Also are there any other liquid fertilizers that are recommended to keep plants looking healthy? Cheers, Scott
  10. What Mystic said, I've been living in my place with an HRV system for 4 months and haven't done anything. If anything it will make it so your tank heaters don't have to work so hard on cooler days as the heat that accumulates in your roof helps to heat your house to the temperature you set.
  11. Haha fun little tool, with the stocking that I eventually want I'm glad it says I'm still understocked.
  12. How does one overcome the whole condensation (from showers etc) on the electrical sockets in a bathroom? I mean wouldn't having a heater, filter and lights plugged into the wall cause an issue?
  13. Dexter is an awesome show, if you haven't seen any episodes I strongly suggest you get a hold of season one from somewhere!
  14. Biggest thing going in will eventually be 5 discus.
  15. There is no mature media. I've had 3 ottos in my 60L for about a year now, although it was cycled when I added them. Only problem I've ever had with them is that one of them kept getting stuck in things, first it got stuck in the cap on the bottom of a cheap heater (to stop it smacking against the glass) I saved it from that fortunately. Unfortunately I lost one of the three otto's a couple days ago, was looking for them and eventually found the third, dead, stuck in a small hole on the underside of a piece of driftwood I bet it was the same one . Surely 2 ottos in a 450L body of water wouldn't cause an ammonia spike? Maybe I'll find some other random fish to throw in there. Thanks for the heads up.
  16. Haha yeah I got my plants from a guy in Christchurch off trademe "Waterplantz". Got 75 stems atleast 20 diff variaties for $30. He put them in bags according to their height (tall, med, short) and gave me a list of everything that he gave me. I have no real idea what is what so just went off his bag labels. Will be interesting to see what it looks like in a few months for sure! Thanks for the advice Jenniferh, I think I will put a few Otto's in at the end of the week will probably be able to gorge themselves by then. There aren't even any fish in it yet and I like watching it haha.
  17. Yeah my sister's tank, (juwel rio 240) has exploded with algae. As soon as my Jager heater gets here I'm going to dump some ottos in there hopefully they help a bit.

  19. That's a nice looking tank, how mature is it? You have 5 discus in there? What size is the tank? What sort of lighting do you have?
  20. It's from my brand new juwel rio 400, I'll take it back to the pet shop and hopefully they will replace it
  21. Ok so I just noticed one of my T5 tubes has a hairline crack in it about 10cm long. It still works... is this a danger? etc etc can I continue to use it? Cheers, Scott
  22. Can anyone give me a ball park figure for how much this is going to cost?
  23. Sorry I meant the "unused black box" use a bit of fishing line or a stanely knife with a long extendable blade to slot between the juwel filter and the glass. That's how I got mine off. Then you can just scrape the left over silicone off the glass with a scraper of some sort. Took me ages to remove the damn thing but I was experimenting and trying not to damage the tank. Ended up getting it off with no scratches on the glass, just be careful and take your time.
