  1. Morcs mentioned Is water polishing what I think it is? Getting all the tiny little bits of debris out that just seem to float around all the time? What is a "quick filter attachment"?
  2. I tested the vodka + praziquantel, dissolved really well. After adding it to the tank though it precipitated out a bit unfortunately. But probably to the same effect as grinding it up. Fish seem ok with the amount of vodka I used.
  3. I read that it's best to dissolve praziquantel in ethanol before adding to the tank. I also read that a good source of ethanol is vodka... is there a better source...? How's vodka going to effect my tank?
  4. That's one full tank . Looks very good though.
  5. You could avoid over dosing with flourish excel by using a syringe to deliver a standard dose and squirting directly on the staghorn. I had green stringy algae problems and this method solved mine without needing to over dose.
  6. Can you keep a puffer or two in a 30L tank? Or is that too small? Lots of plants.
  7. Can you suggest who I should try and contact?
  8. I meant I'll only be getting 1 of those species. So any pet shops in Christchurch that would ship to Dunedin? Which in Christchurch would be likely to have these, and would they know their scientific name?
  9. So I'm trying to stock my old mans tank for him, where can I find these killifish as the pet shops down here basically don't have fish? Aphyosemion striatum Aphyosemion australe Aphyosemion bitaeniatum Fundulopanchax gardneri
  10. Next question is anyone breeding these?
  11. I'm looking for a type of killie that isn't annual, looks good, and would be ok in a group in a 100L heavily planted tank (and that would breed). Can anyone advise as to what is available that suits these conditions?
  12. That looks great! Good job with layout.
  13. The stargrass has really filled out, and the algae growing on the large piece of driftwood gives it a good natural look I think. I need the background plants to fill out some more, but I think time will fix that. Oh and js on the forums here got me a nice big piece of black card to put on the back awhile go, makes a big improvement I think!
  14. Two months on from initial setup. Have added 5 young sterbai cory. Possibly getting some discus in a couple weeks .
  15. Very nice. How many fish do you have in your tank now ?
  16. Not very round, but beautiful to look at none the less.
  17. I have some white worms, I'll give that a shot when they're a little bigger. They'll be a week old tomorrow I think. I get the eggs from my sister, they've been laying every few weeks and there are usually at least 6 on the glass. I lost the first two batches of 6 due to starvation I'm pretty sure (didn't have any microworms at the time). It's amazing how much better these 5 I have currently look, they're about 5mm at present and eagerly ferreting round chomping microworms. Thanks for the advice.
  18. So I'm currently managing to keep a few sterbai fry alive, feeding them on microworms. How big do they have to be before they can eat normal sinking tablets? Also what size should they be before I move them to my 450L community tank (2 blue Rams, 5 ottos, 10 neons)? 1cm? Or are they too fragile still at that size?
  19. I read somewhere anything above 25ppm of nitrates is no good for discus.
  20. I thought a shoal had a form of hierarchy and a school had none :-? I don't know where I got that from... maybe I just made it up for myself  . As far as continuing to school once the fish feel safe goes... I have 10 neons in my 450 tank with not much else at the moment and they usually hang around each other. Occasionally they are all spread out, in contrast they also sometimes form a tight school, which looks great. I'll need to add more neons for more effect once I get the cash to do so!
  21. I've found from experience that messing with the pH is a bad idea and is usually a lot more trouble than it's worth, especially if you don't know what you're doing. On the note of removing tannins, I wouldn't waste money on buying carbon. In a few months and x water changes later your driftwood will have stopped leeching and your water will be clear.
  22. Wow I'd be able to afford a few at that price. Thanks.
  23. That's the one. Man they look cool. I'm going to assume they'd cost a fair bit? Large waste producers (compared against BN)?
