  1. With no other visible symptoms the list of possible causes is pretty big. I'll continue to look, perhaps I should just try the least lethal treatment for parasites. I'm leaning towards flukes. Source: http://animal-world.com/encyclo/fresh/i ... htm#Flukes Where would I get potassium permanganate from?
  2. Yeah my tank is always around 28 degrees, pretty sure they don't have whitespot. They've been doing this for months... I figured it was probably about time that I tried to figure out why... is there any chance that it is just because they are itchy or something? I mean we scratch too and there isn't necessarily anything wrong with us to cause us to do so. They really have no visible signs of disease or damage. Other than that behaviour and everything else is fine, they eat, look colourful etc. Maybe I should just continue to ignore it...
  3. So I have a pair of blue rams in my 60L tank and they are regularly scraping themselves against tank objects. They have been doing this for sometime now. Also in the tank: 10x Neon Tetra 4x Glowlight Tetra 3x Black Neon Tetra 2x Golden Bristlenose None of the other fish seem to be exhibiting any of the scraping that the rams are. Any advice would be appreciated.
  4. How do they get stuck in cotton and not fishing line? Thanks
  5. I hear using cotton is a good idea as it eventually dissolves... is there any risk to the fish? Leeching dyes?
  6. Yeah I'm continuously changing my mind as to whether or not I'm going to use it in my new tank (when it arrives...). I use it in my 60L atm and have an inch of gravel on top of it and haven't had any problems. Even moved the tank with 1/4 water and fish from my old flat to the house I'm in now with no problems, pulled out some plants the other day too and they had massively long roots and it hasn't appeared to upset the daltons at all. I wonder how long it's good for... until the plants have sucked up all the nutrients that it provides...
  7. I seriously doubt restricting their diet and limiting the food available would do them much harm over a 2 week period. Like you say feeding them granules would be the cleanest way to go. With granules the ol' automatic feeder would do the work for you and your mom would only have to worry about the dog. That all being said I haven't got my discus yet and I'm sure when I get them I'll be as paranoid as you...
  8. One feed in the morning, one in the evening?
  9. I boiled the driftwood I put in my tank, it wouldn't sink prior to boiling, also letting it soak for about a week got rid of most of the tannins in it so it didn't turn my AS brown as it would have if I had just stuck it in. Keep in mind the wood I got was store bought. May very well be different in your case, as being off the beach it probably would've had a far amounting of soaking prior to you picking it up.
  10. By "moving around" I'm guessing you mean layout etc not actually moving the tank location. Is it because daltons will cloud up the water if disturbed or it will kill the fish?
  11. It will be the juwel t5 lighting and I was going to put daltons aquatic mix under my gravel.
  12. Awesome thanks for the info guys, just what I wanted to hear too, pretty keen on getting some corys when I eventually get my tank... come on december...
  13. 450L tank. But yeah my tank hasn't even arrived yet so I think I'll see how well things grow without CO2 to start with . Spent the last week looking up all the stuff that I could possibly use to make a really good home for the future occupants as well as look really good.
  14. lol'd @ that. Thanks for the insight Suphew.
  15. From the search's of these forums it appears that corys would be suitable tank mates for discus. Couple questions though. Does anyone know which varieties of corys do better at the 28-30 temperature of a discus tank? Is there a difference between varieties? Also I read somewhere that corys can carry gut parasites that are potentially very harmful for discus anyone experienced this? Cheers, Scott P.S. Also how would blue rams handle discus? They're from the same region.. so... yeh? Tank is a 450L and plan to have 5 discus. Currently have 2 blue rams was going to put them in there as well if it doesn't cause problems?
  16. What sort of retail CO2 systems are there? Pet shops in Dunedin are shocking as far as stocking specialised fish stuff. I've seen this one on the hollywood fish farm website. http://www.hollywoodfishfarm.co.nz/prod ... hp?id=1049 Anyone know what it's like? Does the job? Pros/Cons? Are there any others out there? **EDIT** Are there any dangers of CO2 to the fish? Like... too much CO2? I heard somewhere that a lot of CO2 can drop the PH of the water a fair bit.
  17. Very cool looking thank. Thanks for the info Adodge. I've ordered an Ehiem 2078 now though, still a potent filter but with more gadgets

Thanks for the info. Really caught my eye with the amount of gadgets it has. Even though they may be pointless I love gadgets.

Does anyone have one or seen them around? Looking at the website it looks pretty awesome. Any idea what they cost?
  21. Tank is 150cm long. I think I could probably arrange it in such a way that is doesn't blow my fish away. Can't be that hard right!?
  22. So in your opinion the FX5 would produce too much current for the likes of discus and plants?
  23. I see everyone on here never stops saying how great their FX5 filter is, I'm wondering if it would be suitable for say... a 400L tank that is going to be heavily planted and house discus. What sort of a current does this thing produce? Can you tone it down? Would you need to tone it down? Cheers, Scott
