  1. I've gotta disagree with a few of your points. Most people cannot comprehend interstellar scale - just how vast, and mostly empty, the observable universe is. And how can you comprehend technologies that, by current scientific thinking, are impossible? It's one thing to say "Sure, I understand it's four and a half years to the next solar system if you go at light speed", but do people actually realise how fast that really is, what's involved in almost getting to that speed, and how far away that really is? Considering alternate realities, there's always the many-worlds interpretation of quantum theory, and that's not some crackpot, loopy theory, it's science. As for your first point, how can we know the motives or thinking of an alien race? Their way of thinking could be totally, well, alien, and incomprehensible to us, and their actions could seem pointless or otherwise messed-up. Not having a go at you personally, just a bit of debate The truth is out there Anyone else seen the new movie? No aliens
  2. Last time I tested, it came out of the tap with 0.25 mg/l PO4. My planted tank tests lower a few days after a water change, but I'm using Sera Phosvec, a PO4 absorber, and my tank is heavily planted. I'm not advocating for fewer water changes, BTW, I'm just saying Ham water seems to have high PO4 levels. As for cyanobacteria, I have a few patches on some wood, but I'm using a UV steriliser, and combined with the Phosvec, it seems to be under control. I'm no expert, but this is what's working for me Antibiotics appear to be a short term cure, most of the stuff I've found on-line says to control nitrate and phosphate levels, and keep your plants healthy so they out-compete the cyanobacteria for available phosphates I was just googling around, and found this article interesting - a concept I haven't come across before... http://www.americanaquariumproducts.com ... ntial.html
  3. Sounds like cyanobacteria, and that you're considering erythromycin to get rid of it? I think you're on the right track, try removing phosphate first, and a UV unit may help too. Erythromycin is only a short term cure.
  4. Hamilton has really high phosphate levels in the tap water, doing changes increases my phosphate levels.
  5. I'd like to know how to not breed them! I was so proud when my first fry showed up, unexpected. Now I realise it had nothing to do with me. Just add water... If it's a community tank, Java Moss makes a great hiding spot for the fry.
  6. Lol, that was good. Stella has a good point, it's funny how none of the sceptic prizes have been claimed. People see/hear/believe what they want to. IMHO, believing in life after death is just the ego's way of dealing with the fact you won't exist sometime in the not too distant future. Me, cease to be? What are you, crazy?
  7. And he knows what that looks like because...?
  8. Sorry, off tramping this weekend A bit more notice would have been good! Or I could just turn up to a club meeting. Been very busy this year...
  9. http://canadaonline.about.com/od/crime/ ... cappun.htm That's only one example. Google around, and I think you'll find you are mistaken. I agree, Burton was guilty beyond reasonable doubt and should not have been released the first time. I don't know the Bell case, sorry. I'm all for hard labour and life sentences actually meaning life. My point is, you cannot execute people, simply because the justice system gets it wrong on occasion.
  10. Capital punishment doesn't decrease crime rates. And what happens when the cops get it wrong, as they sometimes do? And no trial, are you serious?
  11. Cool cows! They look a bit emo, with the long fringe :)
  12. Cool, thanks for the links. Why are they so expensive in NZ, are they hard to raise?
  13. What an excellent contribution to this thread. Thanks for sharing your wisdom, unbidden. We all care so much what you think.
  14. Bummer! Just as well it wasn't in the server room
  15. The company I work for has developed a system for gas stations that scans car number plates. If a car on the blacklist drives up, the pump gets locked and the attendant is notified. Although, they are starting to steal/manufacture plates now... I don't know if it's just me getting older and more conservative, but kids these days...
  16. Yeah, I mistakenly thought a fry net was safe in a community tank. My Platies and Tiger Barbs proved my wrong, and in one night I lost the Bolivian Ram fry I put in it. Luckily a second female spawned this week, and I got most of the fry in the modded net yesterday. It's working well, no losses in 24 hours, and the other fish are ignoring the net You can't miss it - it's the big white thing...
  17. Righto, here's the pics. I ended up with a good 2cm gap between the two net layers. I've got some Bolivian Ram fry in, and they seem safe from the rest of the community. The glue worked well, had to pull really, really hard to get one spacer off, and it actually left foam behind - the glue bond was still intact... Gluing foam spacers on Finished and installed, with fry nice and safe. Other fish are ignoring the net. Bit messy on top - the outer net is actually a "Delicates Washing Bag" I scored at Countdown for $5, and I had to gather up some extra material and glue it down. -Simon
  18. I stuck small EPP foam inserts all over a fry net, as a spacer so I could double skin the net. I think it'll last because the glue actually melts the foam a little and bonds really well (I've made RC planes out of this stuff, and the foam tears before the glue joins break), and I pushed down so the glue goes right through the the netting before it sets. I'll post some pics when I get home, you'll see
  19. Did some googling, looks like it's fine. I'll post some pics tonight.
  20. 1 - Don't know 2 - Don't know 3 - Read the bottle 4 - Too much! Actually, regarding #4 - the bigger bottles do work out cheaper in $/ml . The local A shop charges stupid amounts for the small bottles...
  21. I'm planning on building a double skinned fry net, is hot glue safe to use for freshwater aquariums?
  22. You should see my yoga teacher, the guy isn't muscular like a gym-head, but man is he strong, and flexible of course. When I started I was expecting meditation and stretching. Instead it's an hour and a half of torture! You do feel good afterwards though I got really annoyed hearing about "Lesser medals" in the media. People were doing personal bests, what more can you ask for?
  23. They don't advertise it as having algaecidal properties because of the red tape that would generate for them. BTW, I'm dosing at recommended rates and my Riccia is doing fine.
  24. The last 24 hour race I did, I got passed by a Raleigh 20 and an old school 10 speed. In my defence, they were serious riders, but still... Pretty surreal at 3AM Thankfully none of the unicyclists passed me, that would have been too much.
