  1. (Yoda voice) U turn execute, as soon as possible, you must, hmmmm
  2. Firefox + the English (Australian) language add-on FTW Auto spell checking for any web form you fill out
  3. You've gotta wonder about the spelling police... http://xkcd.com/386/
  4. pH and hardness are different things... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hard_water My Java ferns seems to like Flourish Excell, but then what plants don't?
  5. Is it sort of rubbery? If it's what I'm thinking of, it's not very strong - this stuff? http://www.officecentre.co.nz/product.p ... ductid=265 There's a guy selling rare earth magnets for not much $$ on TM, they are super strong - I use them to hold the canopies on RC planes
  6. Clove oil is best, IMHO. Mix several drops up with a shot of vodka, then add that to a container of tank water. Put the fish in the container and it'll be anaesthetised within seconds, and die within a minute or two. Or just hit them with a mallet - instant but not much fun...
  7. Have a squiz at http://www.ratemyfishtank.com/top_planted_tanks/ for inspiration
  8. Yeah, gets me in a bad mooooood :-? Thanks for the link, suphew and Ryan
  9. Here's the unit I'm eyeing up, $160 USD: http://www.wateranywhere.com/Water_Filt ... 5d1e8dccab I've emailed them a question regarding the membrane drying out, thanks for the info.
  10. Can anyone recommend a good and cheap (hope those two aren't mutually exclusive) RO unit? I want one that'll do ~100 l in a day, once a week. I've had a squiz on the web, and I could get one for ~$350 from the U.S, but I'd rather buy N.Z for support and parts. Is anyone else in Hamilton sick of brown algae from the high phosphate in the town supply?
  11. I'm a cat person, but I agree, feral cats are a huge problem. It's surprising how many there are. I was watching the sunset out at Raglan the other weekend, and spotted several by a rubbish bin near the carpark. I had a bit of a poke around in the bushes, and there were little trails running all through the scrub. Do they all live in vicinity to humans (read food sources), or do you find them in the deep bush too? edit: Again, you can't blame the cats for what they are. If people got them nutered like they should, and took responsibility for destroying unwanted cats instead of wussing out and dumping them, the problem wouldn't have arisen. We'll never get that genie back in the bottle edit 2: Are there many feral dogs?
  12. Zoom in on Dubya, he looks pissed-off and is surfing on his crackberry - rude!
  13. Reminds me of the Scorpion and Frog parable. A scorpion and a frog meet on the bank of a stream and the scorpion asks the frog to carry him across on its back because the scorpion cannot swim. The frog asks, "How do I know you won't sting me?" The scorpion says, "Because if I do, I will die too." The frog is satisfied, and they set out, but in midstream, the scorpion stings the frog. The frog feels the onset of paralysis and starts to sink, knowing they both will drown, but has just enough time to gasp "Why?" Replies the scorpion: "Its my nature..."
  14. Yeah, I love those "friends" who you never hear from unless they have 'puter problems. I used to do IT support for a 400 seat call centre. The phone monkeys used to get annoyed at retired people who'd ring to "check their account" and then start chatting. It's really sad when you think about it, but the reps used to get annoyed as they had to close n cases per hour. I'll be talking to my fish when I'm old and lonely Isn't that Billaney's nickname?
  15. Well, I gave the tank a massive clean-up last night - removed the aponogetons, pruned the swords ~50%, added a pack of JBL 7+13, found a days dead tiger barb hidden in one of the swords Have put a patch of dwarf sagg back in - I like the bright green colour. The crypts on the right are going well. Added some combomba. Oh, and some hair grass, another nice bright green. Anyhow, I did a through gravel vac - around 50% water change - and only found one MTS shell. Might be early days still, but not sure now. I might do a spot check one night after lights out. http://i303.photobucket.com/albums/nn15 ... G_0284.jpg I used to have a single male golden gourami. He was in the 80L tank that got me started in fish-keeping. He was fine when he was moved to the 440L thank, but he got spooked during a big rearrangement. Simian kindly gave me a female, and he was back to his old self, basically king of the tank. I had another re-scaping, and they both got spooked. It took about a month for them to come right, and they were still a bit shy. So I was dreading the big clean-out. But strangely enough, both the GGs are fine. If anything, they are even more relaxed. Weird...
  16. These guys thought they were going to see a special edition of Wrath of Kahn, instead Leonard Nemoy comes out and introduces the premier of the new movie. Check out the videos at the end http://screenrant.com/star-trek-reviews ... -vic-6583/ Trailer 3 looks good, too http://www.apple.com/trailers/paramount/startrek/
  17. You can get ceramic noodles on TM cheap, less than half what the shops charge. I have four media trays in my filter, 1 of sponge, 1 of bio balls, and two baskets of ceramic noodles.
  18. I've got one of these http://www.aquaessentials.co.uk/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=1110 on my 440, so it'd be fine on your 215 You don't hear of many people using this brand, but mine's been great so far. Has built in UV. The self priming works well, no pumping needed when cleaning Got mine from World of Water in Hams.
  19. Well, despite some reservations on my part, they're in and doing well. The Dwarf Loaches have the occasional sniff around, but don't seem interested. Obviously I'm feeding them far too well When hassled, the snails just shut up shop for a minute or two, then carry on. I was expecting them to immediately burrow into the substrate, but several have gone glass climbing, and the rest are spreading out on the substrate surface. So much for being nocturnal... I'll post updates as news comes to hand
  20. I just got some Malaysian Trumpet Snails off TM, am I making a big mistake introducing them into my planted community tank? Reading many forums, my understanding is as long as you don't overfeed, they are a good thing and don't disturb plants. I have 7 Dwarf Loaches too...
  21. Yeah, a lot of "yoofs" working in retail don't seem to give a hoot. Oh god, I'm turning into my parents, you kids get off my lawn!
  22. I've just bought some Malaysian Trumpet Snails off TM. I have 7 Dwarf Loaches, have I just ordered expensive food for them? I initially got the loaches to get rid of some mystery snails, but they haven't been interested in them at all, so I think I'll be OK. I plan on introducing the MTSs after lights out to give them a fighting chance anyhow.
  23. I dunno , Alan. We have a LFS in Hams that has very knowledgeable staff, they give you detailed, spot-on info. Some might accuse them of having a few somewhat aggressive sales people, but they certainly know their stuff and won't sell inappropriately. By contrast, we have a big A in town, and their tanks are full of algae and you occasionally see floaters. When I was starting out they happily sold me a couple of fish that were going to quickly outgrow my 80l tank, despite me telling them my exact set-up. I know which shop I choose every time. I guess it comes down to the individual staff and managers. Are they enthusiasts, or do they just work there, if you know what I mean.
  24. Sag tends to grow in clumps, you can still carefully manoeuvre a gravel vac around it to clean. If it's anything like my tank, you'll end up with more than you know what to do with It has a nice bright green colour. If you use substrate ferts, it'll grow about a foot high, otherwise it tops out at about six inches. Well, that's my experience with it anyhow.
