  1. I do IT networking and security for a local company. Although at the moment I'm doing infrastructure stuff - virtualising servers using VMWare. Short version, I'm a computer geek
  2. I have around a dozen, mostly Wagtails, a couple of Reds and a few yellow-ish ones with lots of speckles. Various sizes from mature to three weeks old.
  3. http://yellow.co.nz/companies/Pet-Shops ... _1270.html I like WoW, I got my set-up from them.
  4. Petworld is worth a look. http://yellow.co.nz/companies/Aquariums ... 3_283.html
  5. I had an RC dogfight with one a few months ago, camera on the nose facing backward...
  6. Not at my work. We're very pragmatic, and access aside, everything gets logged by Web Marshal in a SQL database, even the whitelisted IS dept - except me of course ;-) - and everyone has signed an interweb policy. So people tend to read webmail, go to news sites, and the rest of it is work related. We have three PCs in the cafe that are whitelisted and unlogged, no file access though.
  7. I got a water pump off these guys a couple of weeks ago, they are well organised and ship quickly

Do yours surface feed? Mine only seem to like sinking crumbles. Learned behaviour I guess. It's funny how they spend ages chasing each other about, but then they like sleeping in a tight school - head down, bum up of course.
  9. Yeah, thanks. I'm pretty bummed about em. Oh well, got two more SAEs this afternoon - man they are algae hoovers when they are young. Shame they soon learn about fish food
  10. So apart from that, a great candidate
  11. What are Discus like, personality wise? The Rainbows sound cool.
  12. Thanks, Ian. All under control now, pretty much as you said, lots of water changes. Details in the last post in this thread: http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/blue-g ... 31392.html I was just curious about how fast the bio-filter converts. I guess unless you seriously overload it, it keeps ammonia and nitrite almost at zero. My first major fish loss
  13. Furan2 gets expensive when you're dosing a 440 l tank
  14. The Tick was always one of my favs. Spoooooon! Tick: And so, Arthur, we learned that gambling is bad and yet in a certain sense, isn't life itself a gamble? You can never be sure of anything. Like who would have thought that dolphins could go bad and that fish were magnetic? Not me, no sir, not me. Tick: You know, evil comes in many forms, be it a man-eating cow or Joseph Stalin. But you can't let the package hide the pudding. Evil is just plain bad. You don't cotton to it. You gotta smack it on the nose with the rolled up newspaper of goodness. Bad dog! Bad dog! Tick: You know, Arthur, when evil is afoot, and you don't have any arms, you've gotta use your head. And when evil is ahead and you're behind, you've gotta do the legwork. But when you can't get a leg up, you gotta be hip. You gotta keep your chin up, and kick some-... Arthur: Tick, we get the idea Tick: It's your turn now, Thorace-bog. Thrakkorzog: It's Thrakkorzog. Thrakkorzog. With a K. Tick: We're only serving humble pie, Whatchamazog. Thrakkorzog: For the last time, it's... Tick: Thorax-and-a-bog. Four-yacks-and-a-dog. Thrakkorzog: No. Tick: Ah, laxative-log. Thrakkorzog: No, no, no. Tick: Sapsucker-frog. Thrakkorzog: Thrakkorzog. Tick: Susan? Thrakkorzog: Now you're doing it on purpose. How juvenile.
  15. I lost a few fish to a nitrate spike after using E-Mycin to get rid of blue-green algae. I never saw the ammonia or nitrite level increase, and overnight within 8 hours the nitrate was at toxic levels, but still zero for ammonia and nitrite. So my question is, how fast does a mature biofilter do the ammonia-nitrite-nitrate conversion? Does ammonia get converted pretty much instantly, and ditto for nitrite?
  16. I went the E-mycin route last weekend. Dosed at 400 Mg /100 l on Thursday night. I did a water test before going to bed that night, and three tests on Fri - all OK. On Sat I did a 25% water change and vacuum, and administered the second dose. Two water tests that day came back fine. There was a bit of dead BGA floating on the surface, which I scooped out. On Sunday I woke to find cloudy water and everyone on the surface gasping. My Bala Shark, one Dwarf Loach and my large SAE ware dead I tested the water, and found the nitrate had gone ballistic. I did a vacuum and 50% water change immediately, and angled the spray bar for maximum bubble generation. All fish recovered well. Four hours later they were back at the surface. Another 50% water change and a vacuum fixed that, followed by daily 25% changes for three days. Not much fun getting up at 2 in the morning, or driving home from work at lunchtime, to do water tests... It seems stable now, and is testing well. Oh, and the BG Algae is gone. So just a word of warning, be prepared for nitrate spikes. I was expecting the nitrate to slowly increase as the dead BGA got consumed, but within 8 hours overnight it had gone from near zero to toxic levels.
  17. Hiya I'm wanting a largish species with lots of character for a 440 l planted tropical community tank. Anyone have any ideas? Current residents are Tiger Barbs, Emerald Eye Rasboras, Black (Neon?) Tetras, SAEs, Dwarf Loaches, Bolivian Rams, a few Platies, and one, possibly two, Ottos.
  18. I run the network here, so it's all unlogged surfing for me :-)
  19. How long does tap water have to stand to be chlorine-free enough for tropical fish? I'm sick of doing 13 bucket changes for my 440 l. I've got a plastic barrel, and a pump should be arriving on Tues. I figure if I let the barrel stand for a day or so, I won't need chlorine neutraliser? I plan on using a heater in the barrel, although I probably won't need one in summer, as the house gets up to 30 deg when closed up during the day.
  20. Nah, too much bother for tramping, which is usually when I drink it - like Simian said, it's got a great power to weight ratio. We just do shots. The usual sequence of expressions is closely followed by :-? , then preceding and  and much later on, I was thinking, people drink and take photos at parties, is that why there's so many hung-over photos in this thread?
  21. Spoken like someone who's never consumed good absynthe
  22. Here's me, hung over after drinking way too much the night before, at the hut you see behind me. And it was a three hour tramp back to the car I hereby publicly swear to never carry Absinthe in my pack again! This is Leitch's hut, out the back of PioPio...
  23. I'm on-call that weekend, and have to stay within 1/2 and hour of Hams
  24. I nearly crashed my car after using RainX for the first time. I was so mesmerised watching the rain beads streaming off the windscreen, I nearly ran off the road  You don't need wipers for a few weeks after using it, rain just beads up and runs off
