  1. I've growing some Riccia in a net (still haven't decided where to put it), so I put a decent sized clump of that in the container. They are already fighting a little, and eating crushed flake food. Bruce the Bala will be gone by the time I let them back into the community, but I'm worried my Tiger Barbs will find them hard to resist, so I'll let them get to a decent size first, although after seeing how hard they were to catch, they probably would have been fine in the community with the Java Moss to hide in.
  2. Oh well, I managed to find five so far, and have got em in a floating container so I might as well keep them there for a few weeks. I'll sneak up on them in the morning, before the lights are on, and see if I can spot any more. I'm trading my Bala in soon, I'll at least wait until he's gone before releasing them. Thanks again everyone, cigars are on me
  3. Thanks for the instructions and congrat. I've managed to get three into a floating container. There's a few more, but they're hiding out in the Java Moss and I cant get to them. I'll keep trying, but they're on to me now. The Java Moss seems ideal for them to hang out in at this size. I didn't even know the female was pregnant!
  4. One of my new Platies has just given birth!!! I'm a n00b so I have no idea what to do. Do I separate them from the general population? What do I feed them? Totally unexpected. Holy cow, how cool, tiny little fish Off to scour internet for instructions. I'm a dad!
  5. Well, it was 3 to 1 in favour of the males. I got some females in to even things up. much less chasing going on now... They really are quite charming little fish, lots of character, always nosing around to see what's going on. Edit: I noticed some fry just after posting this, I guess the 3 to 1 ratio had an effect
  6. I had a look on Saturday and there were none to be found Thanks anyhow. I managed to find one female at World of Water And she paired up with the less dominant of my two males, go the underdog! (underfish?)

    Poker Vegemite or Marmite?
  8. Another happy Xnet customer. They have a cool plan at $1.54 per Gb with 75Gb free between midnight and 8AM - great for queuing up torrents at night - you can use UTorrent to schedule downloads... The standard plan is $1.02 per Gb. Speed is usually good. It might pay to shop around for a package deal though, there's some good deals for phone/internet. Vodafone have a 20Gb internet and unlimited national call package for $110. Might be worth it if you make lots of national toll calls too.
  9. lol, what'd the tranny do? I don't feel so bad now
  10. I know the feeling 1/2ways I was out clubbing with friends last year. We somehow ended up saying "Bom chicca wow wow", like in the Lynx ads, all night. A week later I spied one of the crowd who'd been out that night, waking into a cafe. I ran up from behind and jumped in front of her with my arms out, going "Bom chicca wow wow". At about the first "wow" I realised it wasn't her. The second "wow" was somewhat muted as the "I'm a total dork" feeling came over me...
  11. That explains the behaviour he exhibits with my Golden Gourami - he wants a few pals to play chase/hide with. Thanks for the info Do you guys think a planted 440L is big enough for three balas? I'm thinking no, but I'd like to hear some other opinions.
  12. I love that Bryan's whole shop is basically one big dark fish room Really nice atmosphere. World of Water in Hams have been good to me, excellent knowledgeable service and a good range of fish. Being a n00b, they really helped me get up and running. There's always something new every time I wander out for a look.
  13. I totally agree. I used to do IT support for a 200 seat call centre. After listening in to some of the abuse they had to put up with, I go out of my way to be polite and courteous to people in that role. After all, they aren't the one who caused the customer's issue, they're just the unfortunate who has to field the calls. Yep, if they're rude then give it back to them, but be professional about it. Some of the younger shop assistants these days (oh god, I'm channelling my parents!) seem to not know the meaning of service.
  14. What a weird comment for someone working in retail. I wonder how many potential sales have gone walking out the door because of that attitude. It's not called a service industry for nothing.
  15. lol, oh well, can anyone suggest a plant friendly largish smart fish with lots of character??? I'm probably going to trade/donate the Bala to a LFS who have a nice big tank with a couple of mature Balas already. He tries to hang out with my Golden Gourami, but the GG only tolerates it for a bit then runs and hides... i think he'd be happier with a few kin to school with. I'd get another, but I don't think my 440 would be big enough for two, and like I said, he's not the smartest fish...
  16. I have a fairly large Bala Shark that I inherited, but he's not brightest fish and I'm thinking of trading him in for something with a bit more spark. I'm liking the sound of a Giant Gourami more and more. Would one be OK in a planted 440L community tank?
  17. Thanks, I'm not sure what the actual ratio is yet. I'll have a squiz when I get home and adjust accordingly this weekend. Sorry for the hijack, BTW
  18. I've a mate who imports some premium brand shoes. They retail for about 2.5 X wholesale price. If you think that's bad, the wholesale price is marked up about 5 X from manufacturing cost
  19. Should I be concerned at the sex ratio with my 4 platies? If there's, say one female and four males, will she get too much attention or will the males fight to establish dominance? They are quite charming little fish I'm finding, really inquisitive and they like playing in the current
  20. They're dark orange/red with black fins. All four are basically the same colour. Thanks for the heads up, I'll give 'em a ring
  21. Thanks, it's a work in progress but I'm enjoying it immensely. Went round all the LFSs today, but no Bollivians Anyone know if there's any in Auckland? My single Platty seems happier with his three new pals
  22. Here's the latest pic of my 440L community tank 9 tiger barbs, 10 black neon tetra, 2 siamese algae eaters, 1 golden gourami, 1 bala shark, 2 bolivian butterflies, 1 bristle-nosed plecco, 4 platies, 12 emerald eye rasboras. Added 3 platties and the rasboras today. That's it, no more fish, well after I find 2 female bolivians... ;-) The net at top right is full of Riccia I got at the last Waikato swap meet, that I haven't decided what to do with yet. Thinking of netting it to the wood in the centre between the Anubias. Just had a massive prune of the Aponogetons in center back. Thinking about (re)moving the centre one of the three Swords on the left so the wood is more visible, the Java Moss is growing nicely on it.
