  1. You are right CunchBang. And some of the habitat down there is so rugged and remote that who knows what other birds remain.... Maybe Moa
  2. You could be right Ryan
  3. Yeah. They doing a great job in various areas around the country. One of the most beautiful birdsongs in the world. And personally I think the South Island ones still exist but maybe not for much longer if someone doesn't come up with some concrete evidence so they can be located and protected.
  4. Interesting Video here http://www.otago.ac.nz/news/itunesu/podcasts/wildflicks.html Quest for the grey Ghost. Anyone been to Mapara to experience our noth island species?
  5. Anyone seen or heard one of these beauties? Supposedly extinct but I have my doubts, especially after watching Sunday on channel 3 last night.
  6. Top notch Joe! :nfs: You must be feeding him the best of food to have him looking so good
  7. The termites I have seen are more than twice the size of your average ant so I suspect they are more than likely to something like book lice. http://www.landcareresearch.co.nz/research/biosystematics/invertebrates/invertid/bug_details.asp?Bu_Id=82

    koi carp??

Must be one of our members!
  9. Bronze comets are actually a comet that hasn't coloured up where as Shubunkins or Shubs can produce up to 50% bronze shubs from a spawning. These will be what are commonly sold as a "bronze commet" in LFS.
  10. Sorry not in Auckland. Staff at LFS should be able to help you chose them. But there will be no guarantee that you will be getting a "pair" as they can be quite hard to sex when not in breeding condition... Here is an example of a breeding/spawning mop http://www.flickr.com/photos/37262538@N03/sets/72157623786680785/

    Koi?

http://www.trademe.co.nz/Pets-animals/Fish/Fish/auction-381139884.htm What do you think guys? Do the larger 2 look like Koi carp?
  13. Young fish around 2yrs old are probably best. Males in breeding condition will also have spots on their pectoral fins. In a pet store the typically slimmer males may be chasing the plumper females. We used to use 2males to 1 female but others off here may have some other ideas
  14. As mentioned above you will need to sex the males from the females but this can be difficult when not in the breeding season. Here is a useful link http://thegab.org/Goldfish/sexing-goldfish.html. Condition them on good quality food (we used trout crumble). Select the best quality specimens and introduce them to their breeding tank. We used heaters to prompt them to spawn with a gradual temp increase. Spawning media was solely tea tree branches arranged in a fan, Not sure why but possibly therapeutic qualities as this stained the water. Spawning mops would be less labor intensive and less messy.
  15. Commets and Shubs are prolific breeders. From one spawning from a large female you will get a multitude of fry. You can raise them successfully in tanks but they do better in larger bodies of water. Feed the newly hatched fry on brineshrimp then when big enough transfer them to ponds, or in you case, tanks with established daphnia. Once big enough they can be fed on trout crumbles. This is how I have seen it done while working for the largest goldfish operation in NZ.
  16. I have had the same thing happen with my Apisto's... Introduced imports and overnight my top Apisto that I had for close to a year was dead within a day!. Others off here have had similar experiences. As you have said, I think the key is to quarantine the imports prior to introducing to an established tank. I am sorry for your losses .
  17. Good quality fish and reliable suppliers. I have been a customer and inadvertently a supplier of the goldfish bowl Hamilton for the last 20 yrs. They are top notch and recently have changed ownership but still have a similar following with the new owner. A wide range of fish catering to all types of customers is the key. As a key buyer you will be supplied with the best fish that smaller buyers will not have preference to. Although.... Large buyers that are pushy and rude will not get the best deals as I have seen this first hand

    Just a few shots

    Looking good :nfs:
  19. Thanks for that Luke. Mine looked to be spawning in the early morning but I can't be sure...... My tank is not yet set up for any spawn. I was thinking of making some type of egg catcher with a fine mesh, with holes big enough for the eggs to fall through but also to keep out the hungry adults....
  20. Hey Luke. Are the eggs light sensitive or just the fry? What did you feed as a first food? Cheers.
  21. Cool. I got myself some also. Great looking fish, but hard to get a good close up look at them as they are very hypo. Currently fattening mine on bloodworms, live daphnia an decap BS.
  22. Anyone had any of these spawn?
  23. I cannot celebrate the death of Bin Laden nor the death of any women or man. I would celebrate a peace treaty but not a death.
