    Sore Betta?

make sure you keep that net clean, I have had probs with them getting scummy with poo and food before which wouldn't be great for a sore fishie. you could siphon it gently with a piece of tubing
  2. shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh MAF might be watching you never know what they will decide we can't have next
  3. I think the stain ingredients get oxidised. Don't forget your water changes even though you can't see the bluey goodness
  4. cheers phrog. I'm more of a bro-ette than a bro but I'll take what I can get If you want any tips I'm happy to help if you pm or something. The waterfall setup is real simple, I just took that cheap indoor fountain pump set and put extra tube on it, ran the tube under and behind and over the rockwork and Bob's your uncle. The head on the fountain is 50cm so it needed no work at all. Then I put a filter sponge in front of the intake and surrounded it with rocks. You get quite a lot of nutrient uptake from all the plants so no other filter needed. Or that was my experience in their previous tank. I'm thinking of putting some height into the scenery with a creeping fig (Ficus pumila) and some twigs. All the plants are baby houseplants from the red shed so I probably spent less than $80 for everything.
  5. the whole thing was probably done in special effects. I have very basic computer fx training and I could do it. I don't think the fish should be that colour, but as a point of fact cold blooded animals can be a little warmer than their surroundings if they have been using their muscles as there is waste heat generated by the metabolic action of fuelling the muscles. Sharks can apparently get quite warm!

    Sore Betta?

I used melafix on a sore girl. Admittedly not that sore but it worked
  7. the lighting on that planted tank made all the difference
  8. there was a really red one on tm the other day as to why, I suppose it is what pigments their body makes - if no discus have genes for a red pigment then the closest you will get is an intense orange I get the feeling you won't ge buying any anyway lol
  9. maybe it's a burn? that caused a fluid filled blister? just guessing, only that bristlies are a bit stupid about snuggling up to heaters and filters
  10. you need to put them on a host like photobucket first then link the image's url using the Img tag
  11. Have you got a link to that? it sounds hilarious!
  12. I'm obviously not a local but I have never had a problem finding the wee "crawlies" as we called them when we were kids. They seem to like stony margins of open waterways in my experience.
  13. gorgeous! nothing wrong with a nice vt!
  14. I suggest in a bigger tank using two smaller heaters. They are less likely to break down as they are not constantly going on and off to maintain the temperature and odds are if one goes the other will keep going and keep things reasonably warm until you can put things to rights
  15. poking a hole in the big end also releases some of the sulfur gas that the yolk produces which is primarily why I do it. The sulfur is what makes that dark ring if things go wrong. My observation has been that the little bit of water that gets in seems to loosen up the membrane a bit, but only in cooled eggs not hot ones. Those ones you just have to eat up as they are! A lady used to buy my duck eggs to make those salted eggs, she bought heaps for chinese new year. She gave us one to try but I was too much of a wuss! My partner ate it. I don't think anyone has made my duck eggs into balut (partially incubated eggs) though. Have seen balut for sale in an asian food store down here so there's a market for it
  16. They're doing well. Both chronic flirts.
  17. I got them as taddies from my lfs Paws and Claws in Upper Hutt and they can get about 5cm long max. Pretty small! They are almost a year old, the taddies turn up from about August onward is my understanding. You look for taddies with the dark marking around the eye as they are turning to be sure you have the right ones
  18. it was one in waiwhetu (lower hutt) called petshopgirls. They still have a large frog tank (not exo) to sell
  19. my trick for dealing with that is to puncture the big end of the egg with a large pin before boiling it. That also stops the yolk going all grey on the edge ew.
  20. A lfs closed near here and I got their lightly used 30 x 30 x 45 exoterra for $50. I know! :bounce: I dismantled a tabletop fountain from Bunnings ($17.88 on special) and attached extra hose to make a waterfall (more of a trickle really - you can even see the drops in some of the photos) and light (light is part of the fountain) My whistlies and minnows are loving the upgrade, except for one very stupid whistly who somehow got confused and drowned. Right by a stone. Duh! Wheeee happy!
  21. I bought myself some ammonia tests recently but the human nose is ultra sensitive to ammonia and if you get a smell you don't like, you gotta problem. Sounds like there's an anaerobic sludge in there somewhere phewwwwwweeeee
