What do green hammer corals like? I have it about 2/3 down my tank in a relatively still area and a section of it is dying. Actually, my whole tank is looking pretty sad, I can't figure out why. Do they like high light? Medium light? Enough flow to just lazily move the polyps around?
395 is just barely UV. It's probably no more harmful than looking at a bright purple light.
UVA 400 nm - 320 nm
UVB 320 nm - 290 nm
UVC 290 nm - 100 nm
Also they're not designed to be run continuously. So they'll probably burn out quickly. So...Really just go out and buy a proper aquarium pump, less hassle and likely better reliability. I'm sure Alan or someone can suggest a good one.
I don't think aluminum should be a problem. But, maybe if you can find a stainless steel heatsink, that would be better. Otherwise maybe just a thin sheet of plastic seperating the water from the cold side of the petier will work with a good current across it?
Unfortunately, Caper, it's just like any hobby where certain hobbiests have their ego tied up in it and consider it to be an extension of their...err...Manhood.
Yeah. Totally different bulbs, differernt mountings, DE requires an additional UV blocking cover glass, SE doesn't. SE is bigger and is just a screw in mounting.
You'll just need to change the bulbs, that's it. Otherwise they'll work fine. PM Reef or jetskisteve, either one can get you good SE MHs, I think.
All switched on growers have though is 400 watters which may be overkill.
DIY a couple wide thin tubes out of some really thin perspex or similar to increase the surface area and slap them together, maybe coil it up so you get a couple feet of area without wasting a lot of space...
Yeah, it works great, I dropped two in my tank and it kept it from heating up much more until they melted in about 15 minutes, then takes a couple hours to freeze them again...
And iirc they're so delicate when in their planktonic stage that they can be killed by bumping into the walls of the tank? Be good if you did get a good way of breeding them though. Maybe you could grow them the same way you do rotifers?
