  1. From what Ive read they breed easily, the hard part is finding a pair that wont beat each other up
  2. I just put a canister filter on my little 2' tank, danios, Rasboras platies and angels..yes angels, love it they all play at riding the increased flow stream, they only move to the still part of the tank for a rest then they are right back at it.
  3. Dam at the price of spirulina tabs give em the lettuce

    Loaches and Ich

Hmm here's an idea Stella inregards to mud fish and ich. I know they are very vulnerable to it like most other scaleless fish but I do wonder if you could take advantage of their natural advantages. A. they can absorb O2 through their skin? and are designed to absorb it through a thick mucus layer when they are dormant so maybe formalin isnt the problem? B They (I forget the proper term Hibernate will do), perhaps taking them out of the water and putting them in some wet Sphagnum moss will actually help them get though the tough spot until the cysts burst (prob about a week in your temp range) give em a quick rinse and put em back in their (now well cleaned) home I may be way off the mark and its prob not a gamble you would like to take.
  9. I'm relatively new to aquarium keeping but here's my 2 cents. Any animal we keep should be comfortable, stimulated, and kept in clean conditions. Agreed nothing we can make will ever compare to their natural environment but we should try as much as possible to make them feel safe. i.e. give them cover. Using the lowers aggression card doesn't wash with me I'm afraid. You must ask why any animal gets aggressive in the first place, In the case of territorial or non schooling fish, their natural behaviour is to aggress intruders in their area, we have personal space and when other people intrude on it we get aggressive, IMO an animals personal space can only be shrunk to a certain point before things go wrong, if you have aggression problems solve it by giving clearer territorial markers/ rearrange tank etc if that fails give them more space by selling some off or a bigger tank if you cant bear to part with them. I have a friend who is still distraught about the fact that his Oscar was killed by its tank mate Flowerhorn, but the truth is he had them too confined you can blame the fish all day long but in reality if we choose to play GOD then we must take responsibility. Rant Ends
  10. yep they definitely go pale when stressed. I have never had mine breed but I have read reports about them digging pits to breed in Good luck
  11. I paid $100 for a pair a few weeks back. Now its just a waiting game.
  12. I hope so I have just done my 5" tank backdrop with epoxy As far as I'm aware Its fine
  13. Cool keep me informed when you are distributing them, I may have room for a few
  14. Does anyone breed these in NZ? Id be keen for some if they are avaliable
  15. yes I saw it too. I cant understand how they can say it looks good in any tank but it sure looks promising.
  16. I have a strange thing going on with a few of my pristella tetras. one eye (pupil) is way bigger than the other, no signs of scales poking out, ph & nitrates all good, no ammonia. Swimming with a list to one side, seems a little slow. Any ideas?
  17. People of the opposite sex? dam I wish id thought of that in the days of my youth 8)
  18. :bounce: Its done :bounce: I went back to work and read the forums etc and that was the end for me. I now have a 3-4" ornate birchir living in my 3' community tank until he grows enough to tough it out in my cichlid tank and at $80 it looks like I wasnt ripped off too much he just had his first feed of earth worm and seems happy as a dinosaur can be
  19. I just saw my first one in the flesh...oh god i want it I am setting up a 5' tank atm too...damnit here are too many cool fish
  20. is the problem the stand or the floor? concrete floors are often not truly level. Get a straight edge and see where the problem lies, as for the tank cracking that I cant comment on.
  21. wow they must be fully grown too (from my research anyway) Oh god I hope they breed *puts hand up for some babies*
  22. So far I have bought 3 second hand tanks on trademe, 2 x3' complete with fish and canister filters and a 5" with all the fruit, I cant say I regret any of the sales I only paid $200 each time, sure they aren't new and the stands need some love but they are all good solid gear. I say just bide your time and get a second hand one of you want to pay around that dollar, you will get a good deal if you are patient
  23. I have heard that running the water through a standard swimming pool filter cartridge works really well and makes it very easy to clean, not sure how it would go under gravity feed tho. Another option would be to use a filter sock like they use in milking plants that would catch everything and leave your water really sparkly and clean. If you were only after a coarse filter id also consider going to a home brew shop, you can get a nice nylon mesh bag for a couple of bucks (they use em to strain out the lumps from home brew wine. But what do I know, I don't even have a sump
  24. And doubles the price. you would be better getting galvanised steel to make it from, then you just need to prime the spots where the zinc has burnt off when welded. Actually If given a choice I'd avoid mild steel altogether and go Stainless or aluminium, if fresh water 304 stainless is sweet, salt water 316 grade, which gets costly. If you choose the right aluminium section it will be as strong and 1/2 the weight.
