  1. Yuuuuuck. The smell of them makes me want to throw up. Ick.
  2. Yeah I am with you on that one. I really didn't think this thread would prompt so much discussion! I love having doves, I love them being in the garden, I love having people bring their children down my driveway to show them, I love being known as 'the house in Wadestown with doves', I love seeing them swoop in and greet me when I arrive home. BUT, I am awestruck when I see this amazing creature swoop down above my house, it's just a bummer it is trying to catch one of my big, fat, flying marshmallows! I guess I will stick to my teatowel flapping and I have attached a couple of plastic bags to the fence. I still had 8 doves this morning so that means it hasn't successfully taken one this week.
  3. Yay congratulations!! Mine cost $49.90 from a store in Petone, Wellington
  4. hehe yes I did run out on the lawn shouting 'HEY HEY HEY' and waving a teatowel in each hand and that seemed to do the job last year and we hadn't seen him since March last year, assuming it is the same falcon. But the neighbours' children were watching me through the fence and they have looked at me funny ever since.
  5. Yay, enjoy!!! :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:
  6. Super sweet! I didn't even know about this service. Thanks!! :bounce:
  7. Does anyone come down to Wellington from Auckland from time to time? I would love to get some cichlids from Johannes Visser.
  8. Probably an overreaction because I didn't have any meds. I have put the temp back down now and added the meds.
  9. This seems wierd but my small green severum has white spot (although I think it is that). I have turned up the temp to 32'C and will add meds once the shops are open and I can buy some more. But one of my angel fish is 'pecking' at the severum for a while every so often. The sev doesn't mind and it looks like he is eating the white spot off the severum. Is this possible?
  10. I have actually met Wurzil Gummidge (John Pertwee) would you believe! He came to a party at my Dad's (my Dad is a minor celebrity) Off the topic and name dropping blah blah.
  11. Honey you're doing ME a favour, I'm hardly going to rush you!! 1-2 buckets sounds perfect! Let me know when I can come by, I am around ALL the time. Sad but true!!!!
  12. Well I will go with your suggestion of yellows, peacocks and demasoni. Sounds cool. Now how many do I add at once and when and where do I get them from??!
  13. Hmm ok I will go for the flags idea rather than the shooting the doves or letting the falcon eat them idea. I can't keep them in unfortunately, I don't have the means, the dovecote can't be closed in and I won't have room for an aviary. Otherwise I guess nature will just take its course. Last year he came by too and took 4 out of 8 doves, but they did manage to regenerate themselves back to 9 by summer, I guess it is just life!
  14. Ok cool I would love some rocks and calcite. My tank is about 1100m by 50mm so I don't know, how muc do I need??
  15. Ok I might be keen on some rocks Mystic ! I am still a little undecided about substrate, was thinking about a mix of crushed coral and silica sand cos I love the bright white look, but worry about being able to siphon during a water change, will the sand go up the siphon? Or can you get courser grades of silica sand?
  16. So that top picture, what kind of rocks are they? Can one just use river rocks (if they are scrubbed/boiled etc)
  17. Hey Mystic, you are too generous, I will see what I can buy first. I love the look of that tank. Are they real plants? If so what real plants are compatible with my (hopefully) Peacock/Demasoni/E.yellows?
  18. Oh yeah, I never actually thought of that. Can you buy frozen mice from a pet store?
  19. Ok so once I get my substrate and some limestone rocks , can I take out my substrate, wash the new, and put it in? Will that raise the PH slowly if I make daily water changes or something like that? I went out to see some cichlids last night at the house of someone on TM (ziggy / blazic - maybe he is on the forum?) and I really liked them. Of course he has an 8ft tank, but at least I got the gist of it.
  20. Anyone got any ideas? We have a NZ falcon who comes around our (very small, suburban) garden this time of year to feed on our doves, who live in a dovecote. When I see it I rush outside and flap my arms around and wave a teatowel, generally looking like a crazy fishwife (well I am a fish wife) but it usually comes back. DOC have no suggestions other than to mention that if anything should happen to this rare endangered $%&* thing there will be hefty fines. Any suggestions?
  21. Oh ok. Yes I will post a pic. Sorry this thread has been very self-indulgent on my part. And also, what's buffering?
  22. Yay I'm gonna take it back! Or maybe I'll get one better. Yeah. Should I be competing with my 3 year old?
  23. Ooh Danielle the tank looks good. I have begun the process, taken out a lot of plants so far and the driftwood and now my son's tank is looking wicked damn it!
  24. ok so next question, where is the best (cheapest?) place to buy argonite or crushed coral?
  25. Oooh I'd love to do that. Just gotta figure out when. I met you (Karen) in Hutt Pets a couple of weekends ago.
