  1. I am certainly not classifying people as 'normal' or 'non-normal' although I would say that my husband thinks that anyone who has more than one tank is not normal. So that includes me I guess. I am 34, female mummy and probably as far from goth as you can get, being one of those boring suburban, desperate housewife types (apart from the affairs, riches, manicured gardens and brand new cars). I just thought it quite interesting and feel like I am definitely an 'outsider' in the hobby.
  2. Ok this seems like a strange phenomenon, but in my limited experience of the fish world so far, I have been to maybe 8 or 9 different people's houses to deliver/collect fish/equipment, and there has been an amazing correlation between people who are tropical fish enthusiasts and people who have an interest in things like medieval stuff/online gaming/black t-shirts. I don't mean to make this sound like a broad sweeping generalisation but is there a reason for this do you think or just coincidence?
  3. Great thanks for your advice! Now does anyone have some good plans for a small chook house or have one they want to give away? And what kinds of hens are the best laying ones? These are for laying only, we will stick to our supermarket bought ones for chicken to eat!
  4. I know there are people down the bank from me who have hens and I know of at least 2 other people in Wadestown who do. I certainly wouldn't dream of having a rooster, I just want some free range eggs and a country feel (that sounds naff but you know what I mean). Thanks for taking the time to look on the WCC website for me
  5. I live in suburban Wellington (Wadestown/Wilton area) and have for the last few years been trying to turn our place into my piece of paradise in the middle of the city. We have a small section but it is flat and fully fenced and is plenty big enough for the kids to have a good run around. We have a dovecote with currently 8 resident doves and a small pond out the front (since today) but I am wondering if there is anyone else out there who lives in suburbia and has hens? What size run would I need? How often do they need to be let out of the run? Am I crazy to even consider this?
  6. I used to have a pond outside which we made from an old shower bottom but we removed it when we had our son as it was too dangerous to have in the backyard. I was thinking though of setting a small one up in a half wine barrel in a garden next to the little path that leads to the front door. I am a home based caregiver but the children are never left for even a minute unsupervised at the front door cos they could get onto the road. Does anyone have any opinion, suggestion about best way to set one up? And once set up what is the best way to clean a pond? Can one just do 30% or so water changes like an indoor tank?
  7. LIke I said it would come to me. Clown Knife? So sorry, I would be gutted if my BGK died.
  8. Sorry I hate to ask but what is a CK? I guess it will come to me as soon as I post this. My condolences.
  9. Thanks for all your advice. I have definitely decided not to get one. I haven't bought a fish for ages though so I am keep to add something interesting to my 3ft community tank. Any suggestions?
  10. Hmm methinks the dead leaves will be cheaper and not eat my killifish! I will keep my $47 and do that instead. Thanks!
  11. Does anyone have one of these? What are they like to keep in a community tank? Are there any fish they are no compatable with? Any special needs?
  12. Haha I tried to catch my danios today to transfer to another tank. After about half an hour I was swearing, sweating, and had uprooted virtually every plant and only caught 2. Have decided it is not worth the hassle!!
  13. My Aquaclear 30 did the same thing and I was so bummed and then took out all the media and gave it a good wash in warm water and cleaned out the pipe bit (inlet?) and put it back together and it worked just fine. Give it a go.
  14. Thanks for that. BD Spider, I LOVE your quote at the bottom of your post. I am one of those people who would rather send someone 3 text messages in a row than try and condense what I'm saying into one message with words like 'da' and '2moro'.
  15. My son has an 80l tank in his room and he is desperate to have frogs and fish in there. Is that at all possible? To have a tank with a deep area for fish and tadpoles and somewhere for frogs to be too? What type of frogs or tadpoles would work? Would you have to have coldwater fish or are there tropical frogs in New Zealand?
  16. I am so sorry to hear of your day. Thinking of you and hoping all goes well for your Dad. You must feel pretty spooked after all these things happening on one day. God bless
  17. Hi, one of my 6 pearl danios is very podgy and I assume full of eggs. I followed advice on the beginners thread and put her and a slim streamlined fellow I assumed to be a male into a separate bare tank at about 28'C with some java moss but nothing happened. After two days I swapped out the 'male' incase it was actually female and put in another hopefully male. Still nothing. She is still full of eggs and tomorrow I go on holiday for 2 weeks. Should I just put her back in the community tank?
  18. I have some large pebbles on the bottom but she is still full of eggs and not looking any thinner. I am keen for her to do whatever she has to do with the male (what is that exactly?? - sorry to be so dumb - I am not up to play with fish love) as I am going on holiday in a few days so she will have to go back in the community tank soon and take her chances in there.
  19. I used to be a Travel Advisor for STA. When I got my first job, part of the interview was a role play and they told me later that one of the main reasons I got the job was because I 'asked for the sale'. I had to play the travel agent and one of the interviewers played the role of a customer and they were asking about a particular tour etc. At the end of telling them about the trip, asking them about what they wanted I said, 'ok well shall we go ahead and book some flights for you?'. They liked this because of course it is essentially a sales role.
  20. Hmm it is 24 hours on and still no closer to any eggs. Should I swap the for another? Perhaps I have a female in with her. I tried to choose my leanest and littlest pearl danio in the hopes that it is a male. Are they easy to sex?
  21. Sweet done all those things. I have the female and hopefully a male in the little tank and she is sort of skating around the bottom of the tank and he is looking nonchalant.
  22. Thanks for that, and what size tank/set up would suit? I have a hexagonal 100L tank. Would that be large enough for a pair?
