  1. sharks such as the hammer head and sandshark prey on fish that they find under the sand. other sharks such as mako can detect the heartbeat of a struggling or injured fish in the water column. they do this by using a 6th sense, the sense of being able to detect minute electrical charges produced by heart or other muscles by use of organs scattered around thier head called the "ampullae of Lorenzini" located at teh base of pores that lead to teh surface of the skin. these can be seen in closeups of sharks heads and look like a "5 o'clock shadow". the hammerheads head shape in fact is due to this extraordinary 6th sense, withthe underside scattered with these pores in order to detect the heartbeat of hiding fish under the sand. it is also this sense that is behind technology such as teh "shark shield" that was designed to irritate the ampullae and to ward off shark attacks. sharks also have a heightened sense of "smell" which is directly connected to thier sense of taste, and some sharks such as mako, bronze whaler, and great whites use this sense of "smell" to find injured prey or the smell of prey animals. they tend to zig-zag up the scent trial into the current until they find the source. this has been demonstrated time and again by studies and by everyday fisherman. even though the exact parts per million will differ between species depending on thier feeding style. any questions?
  2. i too would love a dolphin or a whale, alive and swimming in the sea, not for dinner....oops, er.. i mean, scientific reasearch, yer thats it....(into how good they taste?!)

  4. right, just thought it weird cos ive always found my molly darkens at night, good to know as he is a new fish, and i thought that it might be stress in the new tank, which i shall post pictures of later lol
  5. quick question, since i dont have lights setup yet (on the top of my "to get" list) but i just walked into the room and turned the light on and looked at my tank and my SAE seems to have adopted a much lighter colour stripe than before... anyone else experienced this??
  6. yea, but depends really how much tidal fluctuation you want, lol it works in my head, maybe not practicaly, but to me it would be fine lol
  7. you should do whati should have, gone in, taken a photo then take teh fish away yourself and if they stop you tell them that you have photographic proof of cruelty to the fish that would hold up in court. im a marine biologist and that certainly would be no good for any living organism.... when will people learn??
  8. i had a thought, its combines a couple of DIY feats but it would work awesome i reackon.... make your own background as others before have done out of styrefoam etc, and incorporate a movable section that would make the "tide" move by displacement. using a motor on a timerswitch to move the section up and down every 12 hours or whatever. bit more complex but would do the trick lol
  9. 24 pack of tui at countdown was 20 bux last week.... that would make anything alot more fun
  10. probably GE more than dye, least thats how id do it...

  14. how come whenever i go onto the chat server there is no-one there... do people really use it at all or is it just me? lmao
  15. "let me show you exactly where the $100+ has gone into!" *walk into fishroom and discover carpet jerky* *CRINGE*
  16. http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/where- ... t6979.html follow that link to a thread that has a link to another site that will tell you how to cycle the tank... confusing enough??
  17. i like you, i like fish, is niiiice!
  18. CONGRATS!!! may your babies life be full of blessings!!!
  19. "sold" = translation: we are to ashamed to tell people that actually our fish was removed because we actually know cods-wollop about keeping fish other than how to markup 50-100% and sell as much as we can to un-suspecting and novice fish buyers..??
  20. havent heard anything from the SPCA and i been either working or in whakatane this week so havent been downtown to look and see if anything changed. i was speaking to mark and a couple others and realisticaly i think that they at most would get a warning. though if they did take the fish again most likely that it would be put down. the pacu was bout....20-30 cm from memory, in bout 15cm of water... ill give them a call again tommorow as im off to work again now. no rest for the wicked....
  21. after running around trying to find a decent price for substrate, all lfs having no decent 20l bags for less than 40 bux, i found that palmers had 20l bags for 10 bux each of propegating sand and a small gravel... WINNER!!!!
  22. when i first started working, bout two years ago when i got my residency, i started out at a chain of supermarkets. it was my first job so i didnt know any different. they were good to me though, they were training me for management etc when i moved to tauranga. they helped me into a position at countdown bayfair. was pretty stoked with that but got bored. eventually i left there and worked fulltime for awhile, but when i needed to get a parttime job i couldnt get in at countdown etc that i knew. so i was forced to work at a particular golden arch laden fast food resturant... it was hell compared to my old job, lack of fair wage and overworked for a money-hungry and child labouring bnuch of managers who didnt know a thing about management.... need i say more? anyway i eventually had to leave before i went on a killing spree to remove the worst management in the world from the face of the earth. and i have found a new job at another supermarket where i actually love going to work. i look forward to going and talking to cool people and working at a much more relaxed pace. in short, it helps to know what your getting yourself into, talk to people about thier jobs etc. sometimes teh grass is greener, but someties its a mirage and the other side turns out to be a desert.... just like fish buying, do your research
  23. how do they fed them without breaking the seal that keeps the water up?
  24. i dont know what the outcome is yet, im hoping that at lest they will remove teh fish from teh premises, after that i could tell them about people that could offer it a proper home, and i guess the cost would be a donation to the SPCA. would hate for them to have to humanely kill it, as it would be hell to get more into teh country if at all. anyone know the status of Pacu in NZ? id also like to add a little piece here, just to clarify myself and my actions. im not against fish shops, im not against the chain "animates" as such, i am against the way that they contain and do business in fish. I want them to realise the error of thier ways, and if they need a SPCA warning or to have their certs removed for it then that is what i will try to accomplish.
