the healthy one is the one that is still moving its gills the others are just respiratorilly challenged and they are not bloated they just have problems with metabolising their food efficiently

just some thoghts 1/2 the young will carry the recessive gene but none should show it visually by selectively breeding the young males back to the mother you will increase the rotkiel part of the gene makeup in resulting fry and dimish the % of fish carrying the recessive gene the gold will be recessive but with selectibe breeding you should be able to create gold rotkiels in future fenerations until you have bred the resultant fry you wont know know how the genes are expressed in the fish if you breed 2 fish together carrying the recessive gene you will get some golden fry the best option is to breed fry back to the porebred parent some future breedings of fry will produce "dirty fish" to do this properly requires a lot of tanks and some dedication or a few different people going in the same direction

i think it is wrong to interbreed but if the gene pool is nonexistant and there is a chance of saving the gene pool then i would do the same thing it would need to be made clear though that all subsequent fish came about by inbreeding amd care would have to be taken to fix the rotkeil strain in future generations otherwise you muddy up the future generations of both species of severum the ideal thing to do would be to put the offspring in a few experienced hands and keep the breeding controlled until the strain is fixed with all undesirable fish culled and not released to general sales

as ryan said breeding 2 seperate species is a cross making a hybrid breeding 2 colour varieties of a species is not a cross a bulldog (American, English etc) x staffordshire is a cross of 2 breeds of dog ie: a crossbreed that is still Canis familiaris. some regard the rotkeil as a natural colour form of Heros efasciatus
