  1. Ok I think I have this right. There is NO compulsary destruction order for no Lab number There is a Compulsary destruction order for fail of a hydro or visual test. Labs cost around the 150-200 mark but may take some weeks All cyclinders imported into NZ that hold compressed gases must have a lab if they are made after a certain date....otherwise the factory they come from and DOM generates a LAB Number Any shop that deals in Compressed Gas can appliy for a lab number for you ie Dive Shop, Model Shop, Mechanic, LPG etc etc. Sorry to hear you have been ripd off. Maybe you can take the cyclinder to the shop with a copy of the regs and ask for a replacement...or go to fair go. Navarre

  10. I have to aggree with Alan. I have several plant tanks and depth of gravel varies with all of them. In my planted discus tank gravel is layered in size and all "items" are placed on top of gravel. It has under gravel heating and I have never vacumed the gravel. Has been running around 12 mths or so. I trim plants and do occassional water changes. It has an internal filter Gravel depth runs from 6-10 cms and has about 10 fish total in about 350l water. On the other hand I have a 150l tank that has an average depth of about 7-8 cms. It was planted sparingly originally and has never had CO2. I have only ever had it lightly stocked ...a few guppies. It now has no place in the gravel that is not covered n plants I have NEVER Ever vaxed the gravel. I often pass the vax over the top (about 1-2 cm) of the gravel when doing a water change (about every 2-3 mths). This tank has no filter and relies on the thermal currents from the heater to move the water I dont have algae probs ..tho it is present and I usually (knock on wood) dont loose fish. This tank has been running for about 8 years. So really it is a matter of Balance. HTH Blair
  11. Hi There, I have a Juwel corner tank set up for Discus. Heavily planted with under gravel heating about 6-10 cm substrate and Plants galore...about 350l from memory. I have found this tank to be excellant. Easy to service, as Filter contents all lift out in a "basket" thing pump is easy to remove as is heater etc. easily handles 5 teenage discus, assorted cats and so on. Also eaily handles plant matter etc. I placed dark blue-black paper behind tank to hide wires etc and cant even see filter. Only prob I had was with plugs being european but I brought Tank from Redwood Aquatics and they supplied adapter with tank so was no big deal really. lights all very good and easy to get spares but I haven had to do so yet and has been running for about 18 mths. Also your space might suit a cnr tank better then ...less space = bigger tank and you can still sit at 'puta. HTH Navarre
  12. I have done this a number of times as well. Double baged fish then put with heat pack into a "chillibag". that I have then carried on. Went thru scanner and all got asked about heat pad once but no big deal otherwise. DONT put in cargo. DONT have "loose" HTH Navarre
  13. Loopy That isnt a tank back ground thats a flash back. Youll be able to see the tank if you OPEN your eyes. I told you those 60's drug trips would be no go for you.
  14. Sparks may fly but it is best to be protected. I have seen a few chaps with electrial burn injuries...not nice. All my multi boxes have either an RCD and or a CB (I think). I also try and only use multi boxes with switches. This means you can leave things pluged in and not have to handle wet cords etc and can turn stuff of if you not using it. It also means if you need to isolate one thing you can. I write on the multi box which switch is doing what. I always try to put a drip loop in teh cords and tying them and teh mulitboxes up outa the way helps to. A little more expensive but might be the difference between losing a digit or a full cardic arrest and just a little spark flying. Navarre
  15. Ahhh Man Thats a bummer dude Navarre
  16. To answer your question.... I dont think you have to start in Freshwater. I do think you can start with Marine. However after keeping "Freshies" for nearly 20 years I still dont think I am ready for a "salty" tank yet. If you are lucky and smart you find yourself a Mentor be it a shop or a person and you stick with their advice and go from there. In fish it is a steap learning curve that is emotional and expensive...you are dealing with a living thing. Afterall. Take your time, do things slowly after researching everything and talking to everybody, And unfortunately in this hobby you do definately get what you pay for, and most often than not ...at least as far as gear goes Biggest is Best. HTH Navarre
  17. Redwood Aquatics has NSW in 40L containers I think. Dont you have to be careful near boat ramps and Jetties with all the desiel and stuff floating in the water? You would have to do it at High tide so there is less sediment etc. HTH Navarre
  18. Opps sorry forgot Afra as well...oh how could I forget those. Navarre
  19. Hi Snookie, Any pics? Can I join the que for fry? Navarre
  20. I seem to remember that a company put out a pretty good CO2 unit that just screwed into a soadstream bottle....gave about a years worth for a tank (dep onsize of course) had teh mixer the fine needle valve and all. It may have been JBL but not 100% on that. I think around $500 + bottle for +/- $45. Very easyto use and get refils etc. HTH Navarre
  21. This product was "recalled" from hospitals as it used to be used in Operating Theatres and ED's all over the place to sterilise all sorts of things. Used to have buckets of it floating all over the show. Problem was it used to "sterilise" all the staff as well often with all sorts of nasty respitory illness and Cancers. Now it is only used under "controlled"conditions. You may be able to get some from a Hospital grade pharmacy...but I doubt it. You could always try. HTH Navarre
  22. So I am not an expert but do know a little about bacteria etc. Firstly peat can change the way your filtration works because it can clog the mechanical filtration. ie big peat particles = blocked mechanics. Secondly all life forms are designed to work in a specific range of conditions. Bacteria excreate a slimy coating (biofilm)which enhances their chance of multiplication and they can do this in a cohort kinda way. One of the easiest ways to stop bacteria is to interupt this process. You can do this by changing the pH of the enviroment. Some bacteria are very susceptible to this. Peat does this. Other way's are to change Temp, O2 levels, light (Peat might do this) and energy source. Just a thought though is that "Peat" may also contain other chemicals that inhibit bacteria other than the Tanic acids that change pH What do you think Navarre
  23. I have one running next to my 4 ft tank which runs an open type sump. I notice very little water loss in the tank with the dehumidifier running as appose/opposed to it not running. And I also think thats it is true that yor maintainance schedule should counter any effect/affect anyway HTH Navarre
  24. Hi there, You could still use the sump Idea. could use it for your heaters and filtration then pump back up to top of plants/landscping and flow could be your waterfall. You could divert some of this to your plants and back to tank for current. That way plants help filtration and you have a larger body of water so that has to be better. U could also look and various swords an deven good old fashioned Peace lily as Paladial plants. Maybe Iris and heaps of native plants are also paladial as well. Just a thought Navarre

    Fishless

Nah you get tremors much like a discus flirting(..which depending on the company you keep can some time be a good thing). Then you see the fish climbing the walls then you get all sweaty (diaphoretic) and then you wake up and realise that since its only been 24 hours since you got rid of your last tank, that you might just be able to sneak a new (but larger) tank into the house, and say "...Nah thats the same one ....it just looks bigger cause I cleaned it, AND its got those new fish you said you liked in it instead...Id be really disapointed if you dont like it cause it took a long time and I did it just for you, Honey"   Navarre
