What to feed lemon cichlids and shell dwellers?
firenzenz replied to fish_tank0311's topic in Cichlids
TBH- I think that tank would be best as a single species tank. Get more ocellatus and enjoy their cool behaviour without any interruptions. A 2ft cube with them playing on bottom a®ound shells would be great setup Or chuck 6 small tetras/rasboras or even pair of fighter on top if you want a bit more action in tank 2ft of tank bottom is good for one pair/species of dwarves -

I'd be tempted to return one of the species to HFF and look for swap. get more of what ever you choose to keep. Their policy may not be to take returns but they do have some responsibility under the law to give you correct info, especially if you gave them all the relevant info about the tank they were going too, which sounds like you did if they advised against E yellows. -

most juvie fish co-exist Ok with any number of different species when young. Most fish are young in fish shops and are often in tanks getting on fine with other young fish, that they wouldn't when older and their specific behaviours kick in As Ryan has said issues will be as they grow up. The leleupi are a cm or so away from breeding age and depending on their sexes their interaction could be anything from one trying to kill other to them pairing up and looking to breed then trying to dominate and defend their territory. 'Neos" are great parent and I've seen plenty of times them taking on much larger fish to defend 'their patch' and young. The ocellatus will be under threat I would say- either been continually chased or a straight out target. I'd be looking to arrange tank with two seperate piles of hidey holes either , see where the leleupi choose and pop the ocellatus's shell either end. That though I think is only going to limit potential aggression not stop it. Is tank 3ft or 2ft as I'd say leleupi pair would want 2ft to themselves. -
Try 'shazam' if you like your music. You hear a song playing you like, shazam listens to it, identifies it then give you option of going to itunes to get it. very handy

Haven't ben for a while. The sign did say something like reopening ....2011- can't remember month or time of year. If/when it does reopen I expect to see the exhibits heavily weighted to Natives Flora/Fauna but I hope they do go with some nice tropical set ups also- a few well thought out Bio types would be awesome. As for Aro- +1 for grass carp. They are in the water around the monkeys

Yeah I'd say with their 'conditioning' it would be hard to get really definitive ID from even the experts at PC. I'd not worry for a while, what will be will be and look to wean them off some of the the more protein based foods. Seem to remember on Tm diet was mix with bloodworm also. No more bloodworms or at least wean them off them and move to pleco chip/spirulina/ wood diet for nxt 2mths.

Firstly I'd not be worrying at all if you had 4 females. enough around that I'm sure you'll find someone keen for a swap. If you are doing photo's ( I wouldn't bother yet)- get dorsal and ventral views so you can get good idea of body and head shape- Close up of cheek and pectoral odontodes would be handy also. Was the one fanning in the cave completely- or tail sticking out fanning-(a very male behaviour-when 'advertising') Females will go into caves but dont seem to hole up in them like males. Pretty exciting first week though all in all

I recently had mail from 'Spanish lawyer" . Long story short. I googled the name and found it was a scam run out of The 'States'. There were few post on particular forums about it. They had followed the domain host to Florida then to Mid-west somewhere. They had a full web site of Spanish Law firm set up. Doesn't take much to set up web site. I think think the term is a portfolio of set-ups they had going. Obviously they are opportunistic in the way they operate, so my view is to give them no opportunity I'm just suggesting that Assuming things about their methods or motives or opening up any portal of communication between you and them could bite you- particularly if it is for no other reason than your entertainment. I'd say if you google them you would probably get all the info you require and in al probability already know.

As much as it might be tempting, I would be advise against entering into any sort of correspondence, or opening any attachments files of emails of this sort of nature. The more contacts you make the more you are opening up your Computer and its operating system, and your identity to their scrutiny.

GBA's- I know of a few LFS that would happily take those.

I had blue variety about 5 yrs ago. They were relatively easy to come by. Mine was from Jantzens Botany(as it was back then) Also remember orange Flash cockatoo's, triple red cockatoos. and macmasteri were around the same time. It seems that with apistos and rams spawning is one thing, but keeping fry alive and raising them is something else.

I'd throw some bamboo caves in there also. I'd try flow across a couple of caves and some not. Leave flow as it, as male has chosen cave for whatever reason so leave it be IMO. give hidey holes/shelter outside the caves. Change is as much as trigger as anything else. The simple fact of the move and new tank could be that trigger so be prepared straight off as the fish look to be in great condition. Good luck!

Would come down to the catfish size relative to L270 and amount of hidey holes you have. The L270 would likely 'hunker down' in a tight spot somewhere and you would rarely see it. Both are peaceful to all but their own kind in my experience so should be OK if you have room- what is tank size. I would thought 3ft would be minimum. Competing for food could be a small issue as both nocturnal feeders. issue- a lights out night feed would be recommended, depending on other tankmates.

I buy a big bag of the filter wool( heavy grade for furniture). I change it on my trickle stlye filters before crud gets to other side. Not sure what style your is. I'd be thinking trickle style would be best for the sort of tank. I'd dismantle filter also and wash/scrub it in a bucket of tank water. Soak media in tank water as well and clean out crud. Try a tank full of panaques and 'woody' plecs - you get about a day after water change/filter clean before the whole crud cycle starts again.

Personally I'd stick and fine tune the tank on the mbuna you already have, especially if you like those fish.Means you can have heaps in there How many have you got in the tank already? If it is not many then maybe you have the chance to change tank dynamic now and lean toward something else like a male hap/peacock setup-even 30 male eyebiters If you have a number then adding young kadango, red empresses red peacocks won't give you colour for ages and the mbuna will be very boistrous for those fish. it would be hard to find big coloured adults haps in any sort of numbers. a huge mbuna tank would be cool. Red is difficult- maybe look for some good red Zebra. Kenyi males go a lovely rich orange and females are nice pattern. Aurora' with yellow/purple The 'tropheops chilumba' on wholesale list is a smaller fish with blue male/vibrant orange female. kenyi/ice blues/zebras will crossbreed for sure and chances are the other will also but If you not looking to collect fry/breed in the tank then having multiples of the same genus of different species will give you heaps of colour/patterns that you probably wouldn't notice the lack of red, although Rusty's (Iodotropheus Sperengae) have a cool rusty red/salmon colour in good water. On topic of red mbuna- Google 'SRT Labidichromis Hongi'. I've seen line bred versions of these that are unbeleivable in their redness

Yep!- that size would be OK for a pair. Depending on type of cichlid also as to you planting aquascaping etc.
-
Granted -water quality is integral for all plecs- And anyone who has bought the L270 from babyfish would agree the Clarity of the patterning of their fish is different from other's yet all are from the same original group, and I would suggest their water regime has a lot to do with it. And they are a definite algae eater/vegetarian. I was talking more about the ability of this fish to adapt its patterning to the environment. Excerpt from the description of L168 off planet catfish which with my observation of them is correct This catfish is a master of disguise. It can change colouration, chameleon-style, quickly. If kept on a black or very dark substrate is will go almost black. Kept on a lighter substrate it will show a pretty striped pattern during the day. Another reason for misidentification of this fish is that its night-time colouration is totally different from that it has during the day.

I guess the issue is always what to do when they are imported and sold under a 'made up name'. I have to applaud babyfish for sticking to their guns and to that name and not getting drawn into a premature ID, but instead breeding out a few spawns and building up body of evidence to consider the ID. By the look of the juvie numbers I would say they will definitely be some available in the not too distant future.

Was around at 'Babyfish's' last night and they were collecting fry/juvies from there "bumblbee' breeding tank. These guys were imported as "bumblebee" a couple of yrs ago with no L# but it does seem they are more likely Brachychura(L168) than L052. The breeding set up has no lights and they are on dark ground so look a bit drab. Babies definitely have more defined markings and even more so when they are in a lighted growout tank on lighter substrate. Sorry photos aren't the best- point and shoot in darkish room.
