  1. That tnk is 550ltr and only that guy in atm. I had three in there. 2 about 12-14cm, and one smaller I took the one out as he was now being bullied by this guy- not badly but not happy . The other is 7cm young male I put in nxt time I do a rearrange. took him out to colour up in smaller tank.. I started with 5 X 6cm likely juvie males and let them grow out and see which one handles the tankmates the best. If they were all to get on I guess more would stay. Tankmates are peacocks, dolphins, electras, empress, yellows, plus a couple of random tangs that don't really interact so there are no real meanies in my set up.
  2. Yeah male in all male tank, and maybe 2yrs old- he was actually 2nd Azureus male out of three in that tank. But he was also picked out from a dozen juvie males as being a looker. He was picking on his uncle who was removed, as was hi younger step brother who is now colouring up in another tank. I think the key in all male is to rotate and in Azureus case a group of young so one can flourish almost under the radar 2-4yrs really does seem prime age for the malawi males I've kept in the tank size I have. Always been interested to know what the timeframe for dominance and territory of my fish would be in the wild. Yeah OB is cool- Going to Ryan actually as he as lots of Barry white music. Yeah -have seperated all the holding girls, plus have 50+ fry already growing out so will want to find them homes.
  3. Yep- I just gotta remember to harvest them. Murphy's law i get busy at work/play and forget about em so get "F' all" fry, -and they are stock worth saving. Thanks for comments Ryan - OB coming to  stud when yr ready
  4. Hi- water change+glass clean +rugby overload=pics Cheers! and yellows, especially females the way they should look
  5. looking good man! Calvus looking mean, and that dragonsblood is one of nicest I've seen here.
  6. On a whim i bought a 8cm red tail gourami which my daughter calls 'Bubbles. Bubbles is now 30cm and growing and will probably be the last fish i would sell if i had to sell my fish . Moody , coy, agro, friendly, - a true character Definitely put me down as another on the giant gourami list- I've kept plenty of fish with character but none with personality like them.
  7. Although not the same species or genus( close though and depending on ice blues purity) they both inhabit the same sort of rockscape so will compete for the best bits. The defender may not be the ultimate winner though and the stress of the conflict can also be enough to kill one of them so obvious wounds may not be necessary to indicate problems. Rearranging tank breaking up existing territory can work- adding more of similar fish will also dilute aggression, assuming there aren't more Mbuna )besides e yellow) in the mix.
  8. Totally agree If you you are looking to collect a fish in numbers- makes sense they are all the same species. Beginni really is an oddball in the bary family eh? My first close-up meeting with a 'fancy' plec was 8 yrs ago and L200 Bary. totally gorgeous plec. She's still alive and regal as ever
  9. We need to get those Hemi's and Bary's into seperate groups for future then if both are around in numbers.
  10. No Doubts they are cool. Short of Honduran red points( which i'd love to try), they have to be one of the best of the genus. I had quite a few spawns from mine, grwat parent and lovely characters. Male: Female in breeding colour guarding: My first initial Young couple and parents July 2008:
  11. Very nice David- Sounds like an Awesome trip! looks like an expensive trip to the picture framers is on the cards with all those great shots
  12. :nfs: Peppermints! real ones Nice to see them around if they are in your tank! Hopefully they are and that means somewhere in the world they are being commercially bred :bounce:
  13. Not so much a quote but I've always liked: Dinner party which Winston Churchill was attending. Unknown Woman said indignantly: "Mr Churchill, I do believe you're drunk!" Winston Churchill was heard to reply: "Yes Madam, and you're ugly, but in the morning I'll be sober".
  14. Cool- I really like the set up. Gonna look wicked when it settles down I agree Goldfish definitely need and deserve names- they just seem to require them. I think it is the link with goldfish I had as pets as a kid. I set up a goldfish pond for my Mum 6 yrs ago and there have been no losses in 5yrs. blackmoors/shubs/comets/fantails/ryukins. They are definitely her pets and all feed from hand- too much for the Orandas She has names for them all- I'm actually a bit bit worried now how she'd handle it if she had a few losses. The names though are more along lines of Bubbles, Patch, bluey , Nemo,humpy... etc Anyone want to guess what names goes with which fish variety?
  15. Stop feeding Frequent but small water changes with those changes also build up temp to 30 degrees even 31-32 Pull out wood and bamboo and any other organic matter. I don't think salts have much an affect on plecs but could try as with something like melafix. Good luck.
  16. As above- keep the eggs the wood. I wouldn't bother taking male, as it is likely that amount of disruption would void his natural defence instinct. Use an airstone to aerate. Would putting extra wood/stone as cover around where he is now give more protection, and save you moving as I agree they are good protectors
  17. Nice set up man- good luck!!
  18. Sorry to hear of your losses. It is a bitter lesson to lose such beautiful fish. For mine- I once loss a high proportion of a breeding colony of hypans due to my eagerness to feed and grow up the juvies. Simply it was a combo of too much food, too small a tank( not for fish numbers but for the stress I was putting it under with the bio mass of food), and a water regime that couldn't handle it. I had an ammonia spike and lost almost all the fish in almost exactly the fashion you described. For what it is worth I do try to keep my plecs of similar dietary needs together and not mix them. ie- I wouldn't have L260 in with L200 I think all plecs have the ability to be omnivorous to a degree but that still needs to be regimented. And i firmly believe that 'power feeding' plecs will not induce faster growth rates. Again- sorry to hear. Mr Pleco- right with you with the face palm - you clearing your throat before the lesson mate
  19. Dr Rick Marshall killed the dinosaur, then tamed the other. Then he got fame, fortune andthe hot girl. He bench pressed a sandwhich and got 35 percent body fat. I know, I saw it, it was on the movies. Fantasy? Not as much as that post
  20. All the footage has being amazing. The squirefish spawning and seals through the sardines were awesome
  21. Stone and water world in marua Rd has schist Rock. Not far from you http://www.stoneworld.co.nz/wawcs011224 ... Stone.html
  22. Seems pointless suggesting fish that aren't unavailable Mate! Cardinals- and masses of them
  23. yep- Ice cream for syno's
  24. For what it is worth The primary breeder/supplier of these fish feeds almost exclusively JBL 'Novatab'. The odd spirulina tab wouldn't go astray-although they would probably get what they need from algae/driftwood vegetation etc. Cave- Ceramic or bamboo-maybe something like a flat piece of schist stone angled over cave to give a bit of cover therefore confidence
