  1. maf phoned me. they said that the spawns from the red ones are no longer just red but all mixes ranging as far as yellows, oranges, pinks etc and that some have been bred with other danios. that may be why. i don't know anything about danios so don't know whats possible and whats not.
  2. IME the better the filter, the easier the tank is to look after and the healthier the fish. Doesn't mean you can just do nothing, water changes, gravel vacuuming still need to be done but not so time consuming. Ianab explained it very well.
  3. if you can see lots of eggs there will be a lot more you can't see
  4. anglefish & male fighters generally don't go well together as a general rule - the anglefish tend to nip at the long tail and fins but if there is plenty of plant cover it may be okay
  5. great to hear its running again, its just a shame that you had to come all the way up here.
  6. Chances are it will end up not being someone from here - probably someone who though it looked pretty and will pop it in their community tank. :-?
  7. Hi, I water change weekly and alternate between 30% and 50%. ie week 1 30%, week 2 50% and repeat this. Some change more often and way more, it depends on the type of fish you have.
  8. He's very nice - wish there were some up here that looked like him. I've got females but need another decent ct male.
  9. do the ceramic noodles cope with boiling - I've remembered their names now.
  10. I know this topic has come up before but can't find the link I want. I am aquiring two more external cannister filters today - second hand - and want to make sure nothing comes into my breeding tanks when I set them up. Can the media be sterilised - not the sponges etc as I know how to do those but things like the bio balls etc and those little things that are white and sort of brick like looking (can't remember their names) or should I just get new. Normally I sterilise in bleach then rinse and put into sun.
  11. If you don't want to breed intentionally you can just leave them and see what happens.
  12. You still might find another one or two fry in your tank depending on their size and if there are hiding places in your tank. I found 3 guppy fry in my tank this week - only had the mother for less than two weeks, the next morning there were 4. They were about 4 days old.
  13. Swollen eyes also make me think bacterial - how often do you do water changes, you may need to increase these.
  14. Remember heating costs also depend on where the tank is situated. If the room is warm the heater won't come on. Without my tank heater being turned on my inside tanks stay at about 21 degrees celcius, the lights being on also heat the water to a certain degree. Heaters in our house are set to turn off when the room is about 18 degress. I have a tank the size you are getting and its really good.
  15. Adrienne

    Daphnia

Don't have any but wouldn't mind one either. Only an outside pond (small) with mozzie lavae in it.
  16. I found one of my female fighters hiding in the back of the tank this morning. She looks like this. My gut feeling is that she has either been attacked by another female or has run into something, possibly during water changes. She is a very pale flesh colour and it looks like the eye has been bleeding back under her head. I have isolated her and put a couple of drops of melafix into the tank. She's active enough although a bit scared. What do you think?
  17. Try getting hold of Brett in Rotorua. He was very keen on them and I'm pretty sure he emailed me to say he had some but was having trouble with them, I think he said he thought they were sick or dying... I just can't remember and have deleted the email.
  18. I use Daltons aquatic mix and propegating (sp?) sand with a small layer of grave over the top and down the front cm of the tank. Seems to work well.
  19. Not sure Gills, see my post on the other link. The ones I'm talking about are danios but yellow ones.
  20. I also contacted tm and told them they needed to check the auctions like Alan, and again they did nothing. While I like colourful and beautiful fish, until the risks of GM are fully established, which they will never be, I will never feel comfortable with GM anything being in the country for sale. I have in the last couple of days contacted the MAF line about fish being sold in Auckland as 'yellow glo fish', they have not returned the call so at least I consider I have been more proactive this time than with the above.
  21. I've got one of Gregs tanks, a 4ft and its very well built.
  22. Chuck some tank water in a bucket when you do the water changes and rinse the filter in that.
  23. Theres not a stone or something jammed up inside one of the internal parts is there so that when it starts pumping it moves and blocks it.
