  1. My fluval (internal) used to stick everytime I turned it off. Just a quick flick of the impellor would remove anything stuck in it and hey presto! if was away again.
  2. Definately snails (look a bit like jelly), they're probably on your glass as well if you look closely. What sort of snails do you have?
  3. To work it out length (cms) x height (cms) X depth (cms) and drop the 000's off the end.
  4. Alan is very definately correct, they supplied it and its faulty so they should take it back, give you a replacement for free and then its their responsibility to return it to their supplier. Should definately not be your problem. If they value their customers and their business that is!!!
  5. You will probably have to move the bigger ones out. In all spawns some fish grow faster than others then they take more than their share of food. Sometimes young fry develop swim bladder especially if they eat too much brine shrimp and tend to swim looking like a banana. Sometimes they grow out of it but mostly they have to be culled.
  6. The only time I notice smells in our house is when I return from holiday and the kids have overfed the fish or there is a dead fish in the tank. Have a good check.
  7. If you purchased the filter new I'd take it back and ask for a replacement or at least ring the shop. If its a fault they should replace/repair for nothing. I know its not always convenient and its a pain if you have had it shipped to you but filters aren't cheap. I don't know that plumbing tape would be a good lasting solution but then again a diy expert I'm defiantely not.
  8. It looks from the diagram that this filter runs the opposite way to the cf filters and that the water comes in and down through the filters and then out up the side. On the cf it goes in down the side and then out and up through the filter materials. Therefore in my reckoning the diagram is wrong. It should go 1. top basket - bioballs then sponge (sponge at the bottom of the container, not the top like the diagram, 2. middle basket - ceramic noodles then sponge (sponge again at the bottom of the basket, 3. sponges and then filter wool (wool at the bottom) This is the complete opposite order to the cfs. The white stuff is certainly powder leaching from the ceramic noodles, you may have to syphon it off the bottom of the tank and wipe the glass down to get rid of it.
  9. The wool being the final stage in the filter process stops any fine muck going back into the tank.. I have 4 of these and all are set up the same way as Gatitos filter. The wool just gets really mucky.
  10. You may find you have no problem with keeping the male in a tank with angels and gourami, it really depends on the nature of all the fish in the tank and how much cover (plants) etc there are. The angels may have the odd nip at the fins of a male and the biggest problem is likely to come if there is a male gourami in there. As to keeping the male and female together in a community tank I know people do it without problems, once again if it is well planted it will be easier. The other thing is that if they are both males you will soon know when you put them in the tank together. Enjoy them they are great fish.
  11. Hi, top one is a male, bottom one I can't quite see well enough ( not looking for egg tube if you are wondering). How old are they? Nice fish, like the bottom one a lot. Did you get them privately or from a shop?
  12. The yellow ones I'm talking about were labelled 'glo fish' or similar, thats why I thought they were these.
  13. There was a tank full of yellow ones in at HFF Mt Roskill last Saturday.

    Fluval FX5

Hey everyone, theres a brand new fx5 on TM at the moment. buy now $300 if anyones interested. Not mine by the way!!
  15. Yes they do flare. Has she started to bar up yet.
  16. Have a read through some internet sites - www.bcbetta.com www.bettatalk You need multiple tanks as 1. you can't keep a male in with a female for too long as the male harasses the female 2. you have to remove the female first and then the male after they spawn 3. you need to be prepared for the fact that there may be as many as 500 fry to raise. I have had a couple of spawns in the 300+ which equates to a lot of tank space as by the time the males are a couple to three months old they need to be kept seperate from each other. Make sure you are well equipped before you start with everything you need as fry only take 24-36 hrs to hatch and its too late to start preparing food for them after the eggs are laid.
  17. I have a cf 1000 as well as all the other sizes. Check that the water is coming out of the spraybar. The other thing that may be causing it is the white ceramic noodles, they seem to have a certain amount of powdery dust come off them at the start. I have had to vacuum the bottom of my tank with a couple of these filters and then its cleared up fine.
  18. Is it possible that the other fish have been chasing them? I don't know much about discus but it sounds like the female may have been in a fight.
  19. Its possible that she is still pregnant, I think its possible to have fry for up to 4-5 months from a pregnant female with no male in the tank.
  20. Nice pics, you obviously had a great time.
  21. A thought  the children can't get their hands into the tank can they. I was sort of thinking - play dough etc etc. Or something the cleaners are using. My husband used to have one of my tanks in his science class until the fish started dying. I worked out that the children had been putting their icky hands in the tank with all sorts of stuff on them. To cap it off one day I went in and there was a cork that had been used in a chemical bottle bobbing in the tank and all the fish were dead.
  22. Sorry to hear about all your losses and more sorry I don't have any of the type of fish you lost that I could let you have.
  23. A few years ago my daughters class (primary) had a pet axolotyl. Each week a child was on feeding it. Their job was to go to the pet shop and buy two small fish to feed to it!
  24. No comment!  If its only one eye its probably an injury, if its two could be bacterial. I tend to leave my fish 24 hrs to see if it heals itself without adding anything to the water and it usually does. There are meds to help as well.
  25. try www.brooklands.co.nz for an impellor (spelling?), they stock most eheim parts.
