  1. Tanks dimensions are 63cmW X 41cm H x 41cmD = 105.9 litres. Ph just out of the tank is just over 7, checked a couple of my established freshwater tanks and they are running at 7.6 ATM.
  2. My tanks is just over 100 litres - pretty much square in shape. If I went with electric yellows what sort of filter would I need and also what do I do about ph and hardness of water etc. Also how many fish would I put in that sized tank?
  3. I got one last year, same measurements as that, brand new $65-$75 I can't remember which it was, from a maker here in Auckland. I'm pretty sure he still makes them.
  4. I don't really mind whether the tank is bb or planted. Its more a case of what I will have time to care for properly given that I have seven tanks of fighters already, a couple of community tanks, three children! to look after and work full time. I'm just a bit worried about water changes and the time it takes to do these as I believe discus require frequent changes. At the moment I can get away with one evening a week on what I have already and the odd vacuum and top up on some of the bb tanks. I know next to nothing about discus or electric yellows, have looked up a few sites and get more confused by the minute.
  5. Does anyone run one of these cannister filters and if so whats it like. Thanks
  6. I'm really keen on the idea of some smallish 5-6cm discus for my tank but also really like the look of the Electric Yellows and similar sized cichlids. Possibly is going to come down to the amount of time taken to look after them properly and the type of fish I can give enough time to. Whats the story about water changes/ filtering etc or can you give me good site links to read up on them please.
  7. I saw some of the fish pictured in my lfs yesterday, they were labelled pictus but from memory were about $30, I think, as thought they weren't a bad price.
  8. I've a mostly white female - well she's white with gold tints in her until you take a photo with a flash and then a slight hint of very pale blue shows in her tail. She's half cambodian and very similar to your male in the translucent look of tail and fins. Possibly have some white females coming on, they are definately white at the moment but are only 3 months old so still may colour up a bit.
  9. I think that once the heaters been on for a while the other side will warm up, it will just take longer to start with as the glass will have to transfer the heat unless theres enough circulation around the divider for the water to circulate through. Might take overnight as well.
  10. I've a tank of about 100 litres, pretty much square in shape. Don't know what to put in it. I've looked at discus and cichlids, none of which I know much about, have asked the odd question on this forum but still haven't decided. What does everyone suggest. Planted or unplanted doesn't matter. I've 4 x 4ft tanks also to use in the future if needed when the occupants grow. Suggestions everyone please!
  11. have you got a tank divider sorted - what size does it need to be, I might have a spare here I could drop around.
  12. mmmmm... think of how many tanks you could get on stands up the wall.
  13. oh b----r!! I thought my tank might be good - if he's got a mark on him he's probably a cambodian cross but I might be wrong. White is not easy to come by in NZ, it does happen but not a lot.
  14. I sterilise all my gravel before I reuse it. I chuck in some janola and water and leave it to soak for a few hours. Rinse it out really well and leave it in the sun to dry out. Works great and I've never had any problems, in fact I do it with tanks, filters, heaters, sponges -everything!
  15. Thanks for your help everyone - so what size would you recommend I look at getting?
  16. Thanks, another question - sorry about this. Do you buy discus in pairs or do they choose their own mates, also do different types crossbreed and so therefore if I purchased 4 young discus of two different types and put them in the same tank are they likely to pair up with each other or cross match. (Does this make sense??).
  17. I've used the one that you need to hatch - hatch rate not bad, better though if you use sea water instead of making up your own.
  18. Never used it, what do you want it for?
  19. Am wanting to get some discus. My tank is about 110 litres and is pretty much box like in shape. I've tried looking for some info on the net but don't seem to be having much luck. My questions - is this tank big enough to start with, how many could I get, how much filtration would I need and does it need to be planted. I'm not intending to buy them until everything is sorted out properly. Could those of you with experience please give me some information or sites to look through. Thanks
  20. I just use water straight from the hose for my fighters with no problems. If the temp drops too much I fill other tanks while the heater does its magic and then finish filling the tank later.
  21. I had 4 weeks recommended to me by a few fish keepers on this forum and have kept to this. No problems in my tanks anymore!
  22. Thanks everyone (off to do some research).
