    SAE difference

The SAE and the Blackline Flying fox are the one and same fish. How do you know? IMO go to a person or go with a person who knows what they are talking about, its really the best way.
  2. My husband didn't like the amount of time I spent on fish until he gave me a 5ft tank last Christmas. I filled it up with his choice of fish - not mine, and now he doesn't mind at all I do all the cleaning and feeding but if asked he will carry tanks and water within reason so all good!
  3. No camping ground at Pukekohe but my NI camping guide 2001 says theres one at Ramarama which is pretty close. Will pm the contact details now.
  4. My pH sits on 6 and comes out the tap at 7.4 - driftwood will lower it. Unless your fish require higher pH leave it as it is better to have a stable pH than to have one that alters all the time. Adjusting it unnecessarily will cost you time and money and you will risk swings.
  5. The ferry to Waiheke is a nice trip and Waiheke itself is a pleasant way to spend a day if you have the time. You can also get a ferry to Rangitoto and walk up it if you want. Motutapu Island - right beside and I mean right beside Rangitoto is also very nice. But both are really day trips. Theres also the sky tower but imo going to the top of Mt Eden is just as good a view. Cornwall Park/One Tree Hill is another place for good views and if you walk around One Tree Hill you can see both coastlines. I often walk our dog around there. Theres a nice cafe and ice cream place if you have children and the lambs are aplenty at the moment. Theres also a playground on the One Tree Hill side of the park. Then theres Devonport, the tunnels at North Head and the North Auckland beaches. Kelly Tarltons, the Zoo, the nitelife i.e. Ice Bar, Viaduct Basin bars, K Rd although not as wild as it used to be and of course Aotea Square. Fish Places - Pupuke Aquariums, Hollywoods are the two I would recommend. Just remember though it can take a long time to do a short distance in the Auckland Traffic.
  6. My ones wouldn't 'do' flake either the one time I tried it. Possibly because they had never been fed it before. They probably would eventually but I would be worried more about pollution in the tank from mouldy flake.
  7. ime they eat it when they are younger and as soon as they get to a reasonable size get lazy.

    A few pics

I've tried putting it in the tank and squirting it on the algae. I didn't think it was working but when I stopped for a while it increased significantly. Squirting it directly on the driftwood works but I haven't noticed any difference squirting it directly on the plants.

Some people like the natural look and algae is natural
  10. I agree and also will probably throw more comb tails. Nice fish but are you certain a female?
  11. Males $20 - $30, females about $15. Fancy males atm $45.
  12. I have rather a lot of fighters - minimum tank size 7litres although I prefer about 18 litres, heater around 24 degrees, very low current. They don't like those trickle filters with the return powerheads at all!. Any current makes it very hard for them to swim because of the long tail and fins. If only have 1 fighter in a tank try a sponge filter powered by an airpump or something similar. A very good community fish - only 1 male to a tank though - preferably keep fin nippers (angelfish, male guppies and barbs) away from them as they may nibble the fighters tail. Lots of food options, flakes, betta pellets, bloodworms, bbs. Will not eat plants and its up to you if you want a planted tank or not.
  13. one eye - probably an injury and will most likely heal itself two eyes could be bacteria. Keep the tank clean, daily water changes and if no improvement after 2-3 days try medicating. Normally it clears up by itself.
  14. sometimes theres other users around the world logged in and its evening where they are
  15. Yes they do - usually caused by the stress of being contained however in your case it was probably the new fish if she could see them. However the good news is that if you put her back in with the male you will have more fry within a month.

    gba, tunnels

I would say its as important to them as it is to you to have somewhere to go (i.e. your home or your bedroom) when you want to feel secure. These fish prefer to come out at night when its quiet therefore they need to have somewhere to hide during the daytime.
  17. Looks pretty much like the standard algae that we all get. I clean mine off the glass every few days. Could be too much light but not certain.
  18. When you paid your bond it should have been lodged by the agent with Tenancy Services (if they are renting out the property on behalf of the landlord) and they will have a copy of the bond lodgement receipt. I believe you also should have one. Normally this needs to be signed by both parties before it can be refunded. However with one of our tenants the signed form went missing and the tenant applied himself for the refund. We received a letter saying that unless we objected within 3 weeks they would pay. If you don't have a copy of the bond lodgement get in touch with the letting agent and ask where it is. Tenancy services number 0800 737 666 My understanding is that an inspection should be done immediately on the premises being vacated with both parties present. This is something we always do.
  19. I posted a pic of this a few weeks ago but no one really knew for sure. Since then the plant has sprouted a stalk of about 60cm, 1/2 way up theres some leaves and at the very top of the tank right on the surface is the first pic. There is a flower (I think) that is open on it on the right. The second pic is of the plant itself and the third of a plant which I assumed was the same type. Do I just snip the top one off below the roots and replant
  20. Give it a break for a few and i do mean a few weeks and try again. It sounds from the description of the female that she is stressed and stressed fish don't breed. Leave them alone and don 't fiddle around shifting things and the fish. Not all fighter pairs are compatible anyway. I've been breeding them for three years and this year have only managed to get 4 successful spawns. Read up on the internet sites while you're giving the fish a break. The information is pretty similar and works (or it did for me) when I started out.

hoping someone can help with this. I have a fish that I think is some sort of barb silver body with two black lines vertically on its body and an orange stripe horizontally from head to tail. Tried taking a pic but its way too fast. Currently terrorizing everything in my big tank. Any ideas
  23. Don't know anything about goldfish but just looks like a 'fat' fish to me. As the others have said dropsy will show with a pinecone effect when you look down on the fish. Any fish I have had with dropsy also don't swim around much or eat and yet still get larger and larger.
  24. hi - heating 1 1/2 watts per litre so imo about 150 watt heater - filter, externals are great but it depends what you want to keep and how heavily you are going to stock the tank. A minimum turnover of 4 x per hour at least although I prefer higher than that. The cf cannister range is a good price although I do find the cf500 slightly on the low side for a 100l tank ime. fish - not going there have fun and take your time to decide.
