  1. Make sure the water temperature stays low, they do not like it warm (my personal experience). The one we were keeping did well at 18 degrees.
  2. I had this particular val up until last year - gave a whole lot away, then the rest 'melted' on me, most probably due to the flourish excel. As of yet I haven't been able to get hold of any more. A lovely plant.
  3. My husband says that this is the one we have in our new car - he bought it so he should know  anyway here is what it says Please note that the words SEEK and DSPL are inside a circle indicating that they maybe somewhere on the radio panel i.e. a button or something. These are the instructions. The clock uses a 12-hour digital indication. 1. Press and hold the select button (the setup display appears). 2. Press the select button repeatedly until 'CLOCK-ADJ appears. 3. Press 'SEEK'+ (The hour indication flashes. 4. Rotate the control dial to set the hour and minute. (To move the difital indication, press 'SEEK' -/+. 5. After setting the minute, press the select button. (The setup is complete and the clock starts. To display the clock, press 'DSPL'. Press 'DSPL' again to return to the previous display. Hope this helps.
  4. Well, the excel has done nothing for my hair algae, the only thing keeping it in check is to limit the T5HO lighting I have.
  5. heres an updated shot of one of the males - he's the bottom right one in this photo - taken 12 March and now this is the guy in the top left - he's been sold hence the not so good photo
  6. My son certainly was the easier of my three teens. However my older daughter is now a good friend and the younger one is getting there. My son is 3 years older than my oldest daughter and neither were ever seen hanging around his mates.
  7. mine often lay in the same tank at the same time, usually every 7 or 8 days for about 3 months and then take a few months break before starting again.
  8. good to hear - are those the wee ct girls from here?
  9. An update - the fry are growing well and I don't seem to have lost many. However, I have another 3 spawns of them in the big tank, all free swimming today. These will definitely be left for the parents to raise themselves. I have put netting over the filter to aid this. So, not 5 males and 1 female  but 3 pairs
  10. Yes, they said that to me last week and I'm off there again tomorrow night and also next Monday night.
  11. Young and new parents - they just need more practice. Mine had about 10 attempts before they got them to the wriggler stage.
  12. what makes you think they are bite marks and yes discus do bite each other.
  13. My thoughts are with you both.
  14. I've also got hair algae in my big tank and its been increasing over the last 3 weeks. Started dosing excel again two days ago as my bba is also regrowing. Only using a single dose rate as have discus in the tank so will know in another 2-3 days if it is going to work. Will keep you posted to stop everyone going out spending large $ on flourish excel to find that it does not work.
  15. width is going to depend a lot on how much you feed it and how much exercise it gets.
  16. I would agree with Zev or otherwise a heater burn?
  17. around the 4 weeks although can hold for longer.
  18. Thats the way I think too therefore I have only entered one photo ever.
  19. Well I siphoned out about 100 fry last Thursday and they are doing well in their own tank. Left a few with each set of parents and they had disappeared by Friday night. This evening I have discovered that one of the pairs has eggs again. Not sure about the second pair, they have disappeared out of sight so they may have more eggs as well. Are they likely to continue to spawn if I keep siphoning out the young? I am assuming that they do not spawn when they have young fry with them.
  20. I went into NZ Couriers this afternoon and spoke to the big boss man there. Its a definite no up here in Auckland as this was the branch that was singled out. Other branches apparently can ignore the head office directive if they wish but there is no way we will be able to send anything live with NZ Couriers. The good news is that they will refund all my tickets, both long haul and inter island. They know that Post Haste (their sister company) is still sending fish but it was NZ Couriers that has been singled out. Apparently its axolotyls in their plastic bags eating each other and turtles in bubble wrapped bags that have caused the issue.
  21. Phoenix - what I want to know is how come the markings on your fish are always so clear. Mine are never as well defined as yours
  22. In my group of 6 I've got two confirmed pairs plus two males. The males from the two pairs scrap all the time as do the two females and the other two males sit back and referee. I don't know that changing the ratio will make any difference. Just give them places to go off to when they want to be left alone
  23. what fish do you already have and do you only have the one tank?
