  1. Well now he's a daddy he doesn't have time during the day anymore
  2. mine did either 2500lph or 3500lph I can't remember which.
  3. I purchased one of the expensive eheims (cost about $300), was well worth the money imo. Great flow rate, able to be adjusted and quiet (was in my lounge between my chair and the tv).
  4. They are only worth 'what someone is prepared to pay'. This may sound cynical but when I was trying to sell off4 early last year (I think) at about 7-8cm the best I could get was $20 for the lot. No one else wanted them.
  5. You need to bear in mind that potentially you could end up with 300+ fry from one spawning. Once the males mature they need to be kept apart i.e. one container per male - how you go about doing this is up to you. However, I for one am absolutely desperate to get my hand on a decent veiltail female and to a lesser extent a male.
  6. if she's been contained for a few days and is filling out - sort of marble looking from the front view I'd wait until tomorrow evening and let her out. He will chase her but as long as he's not inflicting serious damage leave her in there. If no spawning after a couple of days, take her out, seperate them totally and try again in another week. Some fighters are simply just not compatible. Good luck.
  7. How big is he compared to her. What does she look like i.e. do her sides have dark and light lines on them and if so are they horizontal or vertical. How long has she been in with him. What have you been feeding them.
  8. Some fighters don't even build a nest until spawning starts. Adding plants or a piece of polystyrene gives a surface for the bubbles to adhere to. Plants also give the female somewhere to hide until she's ready to spawn. What sort of fighters are they?
  9. Yes I did field a lot of questions on how much money I made from fish .... I just laughed and told them that after 3 1/2 years I would have been luck to break even.
  10. yep definitely a cheese grater - I usually lose at least one to choking each time.
  11. I send a limited amount to the petshops (when they ask) but by doing this it restricts them to only local buyers or those more experienced fishkeepers who have the knowledge to source and arrange to have them sent. By selling another way it distributes the fish through the country but as I was already aware, it opens up your homes to strangers. Anyway, now I'm just trying to get a replacement girl (or two) sent.
  12. Not too hard once you've already been there. Bad luck if the matrix security catches you but then again ... they don't ever catch the boys out of bed at nights - thats me that does that
  13. Fighters are prone to it if they sit on the bottom of the tank for long periods of time. The only way you will know is if it starts to grow back. Just make sure that you can't see red streaks further up the fins and tail - if you can its the bacteria and you'll walk in one day to find that the fins and tail have dropped off to that level. Furan does work, so does salt. Keep up daily water changes and increase the water flow.
  14. No its not the first time - one went missing 6 months ago (no it did not die) Only one person plus myself and the seller (I purchased this one) knew I had it - they saw it. I mentioned that I believed it wasn't a forum member so you didn't look at each other sideways. I don't think this should be a closed forum as its a hobby and people should be encouraged to gain knowledge. However I am worried as I showed some of my plecs at the same time (but not all of them). The door is not within our section so the dog doesn't pay attention to people going around there. We live on a large site with security gates and cameras which unfortunately do not extend to around our houses. I did wake up to a scrapping noise at 3.30am this morning but thought one of my children had rolled over and hit the wall. However a new lock and padlock will be going on the shed. I posted this to warn others, I know some of you are already aware of this sort of thing. From now on my tanks will only be able to be viewed if I know the people already. Its a sad state of affairs and one that goes against the fact that I want to show others what can be achieved and how to go about it. I am now going to email the person I purchased this fish and the other breeders from and see if I can replace her.
  15. For the second time in less than six months I have had a fish taken from my fishroom. Went out this morning to find the shed door open and one of my beautiful young halfmoon females was gone from her tank - No I am not imagining it. She was there at 11pm last night along with 5 other females. Once again I have a fair idea who took it, but no proof and no knowledge of where this person lives but I can (once again) say that I am pretty certain they are not a forum member. Please please make sure your rooms are locked. Mods please move this post if you feel you need to.
  16. We were a bit lucky for shade as son and his mates camped overnight and parked their wagon up at the top of the hairpin so we had shade from that and the market umbrella. The fatality was tragic Its a very rare event but it makes me even more nervous that my son has started his career as a sidecar swinger this season (he was not racing at Paeroa).
  17. You could float her in an icecream container (filled with water from your tank), on the top of the tank. The only thing is you will need to change the water twice a day and whatever you do don't put the water from the icecream container back in your tank. You could try adding salt (tonic or rock) at the rate of 1gram a litre and see if that helps.
  18. yes, I was very careful to keep the heater below the level of the water. This heater almost never came on, it was only there as a backup but the water was usually heated sufficiently before it got this far.
  19. Did anyone else go today? Great racing, incredibly hot day though and very heavy traffic on the return to Auckland
  20. the only time that mine bred was when I had an algae bloom in my tank for a couple of weeks and I couldn't see the fish or wood (it was so green). When it cleared there were young bn everywhere.
  21. even I  can tell that they are not the same plant and thats saying something
  22. I may be completely wrong here but I have been told that if an ordinary brown bristlenose is crossed with a gba or albino bn that the spots will be a lot lighter than the normal brown bn.
