  1. Sams idea about colour might work if you feed some fish spirulina flakes and the others flakes without. Often there are questions on here about why has my fish got some dark marks on it.
  2. I've got it too and the SAE don't go near it unfortunately. The CO2 is definitely a possibility in my tank given the high temps its hit of recent weeks.
  3. They were not that big but I would put them over 6cm now. Can't tell for sure unless I catch them and I'm not going to try to do that! The last couple of days they have been a lot easier to see in the tank as have been out with the lights on (still under the wood though).
  4. I don't know how old they would be. I know that I saw at least one female today absolutely gravid with eggs. She's huge and I think the other male was near her. The male (or at least I think its a male from the planet catfish pictures) that is fanning I can't see into the piece of wood where he is. The area is pretty small though and he's stuffed himself in there very tightly. Time will tell I suppose. Last week it was the two pairs of bolivian rams that spawned in the same tank. I ended up siphoning out about 90% of the young and it was probably just as well as the fry I left with the parents have disappeared - probably eaten by the two lonely spinster rams in the tank
  5. Do plecs normally fan when they are wedged in their caves or do they only do it when there are eggs? I'm talking pretty peckoltias (maccus?).

it will be a lot easier on the fish to take the rock out. My experience with discus is that they can cope with the odd 1 1/2 times the normal dose (add water to the excel first as adding straight into the tank by the discus can cause burns), but as a daily amount you are better to stick within the guidelines.
  7. definitely caused by too much light. The more the blackout the quicker it will go.
  8. turn off your lights, add filter wool to the intake (assuming its an external filter) and be prepared to rinse it out regularly.
  9. funny haha! I'm not allowed those tanks inside and I have a 5 ft in the lounge already although I have been saying I think I'll have to put a couple of tanks up in the sunroom (which is where I started off before I was firmly thrown out to the shed  ).
  10. I've got the tanks - I've got three empty ones on the floor of the shed but no where to put them. Someone needs to build me some stands and then all I will need is some more power points  I already run multiplugs off multiplugs off a single power point. I've got 4 4fts, 2 3fts and 6 2fts running in the shed but the 3fts and 1 4ft don't have fighters in them.
  11. Well there is one girl that may end up like that yet so I won't forget you. I keep looking every day at her. Theres another 4ft tank full of less mature ones atm which are still colouring out. Trouble is I have no more room for tanks and I want to spawn some more!
  12. I quite like the glass catfish. Its a good picture of them/
  13. I have both harlequins and rummynose in my big tank and they look great when they are in a big school of 20 or more. I don't know where you get them from but at one of my lfs the harlequins are often discounted. Unfortunately I can stare all I want at the tank and still don't see my chocolates. Thats probably because theres so much plant and wood there that its a bit like a forest growing at the back of the tank
  14. heres some quick snaps - quite a few of these were taken through the tank glass and the blue plastic betta holders. I have some green fighters but they don't look green in these pics. As you can see there are 6 females in this lot so I seem to have a fairly even split between the sexes.
  15. What are those little pipe things in the picture, what are they made of and where did you get them? They look like something I could really really really  use. Thanks
  16. Yes, I've got a number of marbles at the moment in a great selection of colours. I'll try and get some more pics this weekend of some of the other tank of them. The bigger ones are no separate from the others as I didn't want to come home to find a head at one end of the tank and a tail at the other end with nothing left in between. They are starting to blow bubble nests as well.
  17. Chocolate zebra's are really nice but they need good hiding places and are not often seen once they have these. I have 3 and very rarely ever see them. What about a few angel fish. I understand they like deep tanks and they are reasonably peaceful as long as you don't have fish with long flowing fins in the tank with them. How many I don't know as I don't keep these myself so am not certain how much room they require. More zebra's or neons/cardinals? What sort of fish do you like the look of? The best thing would be to get a selection of fish that swim in the different levels of the tank i.e. some for the bottom of the tank which it sounds like you have covered already, some that swim in the middle level of the tank like the zebras and some that swim at the top of the tank - an example would be hatchets but they are not cheap unfortunately and they also jump.
  18. I've decided to leave them where they are. Had to laugh tonight. I was watching them at feeding time and the bn were getting right in among the fry. The male ram came along and pushed the bn across the tank using his nose. No nipping, just a very firm and prolonged push across the tank away from the fry.
  19. Theres lots of information on glosso on here but unless you have good quality high strength lighting its not going to do well. Use the search function and have a read through whats been said about it and then if you've still got any questions ask away.
  20. hmmmmm!! I don't think I can fit another tank in the shed. I might have to bring one back into the house. So set it up and take the fry away from the parents? or bring the parents too. Sorry for the questions and thanks for answering Ron. I only got one of the pairs about 2 weeks ago and then thought I had 5 males and one 1 female in the tank
  21. I've put a stocking over the filter intake. I'm running a cf1200 on the tank but I do have a couple of powerheads and did wonder if perhaps I should turn them off. Are the BN likely to nibble the fry. They are the only ones the parents are chasing. The other plecs you never see out and about although I guess they will come out at night.
  22. Came home from work tonight and wandered in to look at my pleco tank which has 6 bolivian rams in it to find one pair guarding a whole lot of fry (free swimming). Then looked at the other end of the tank to see a single bolivian ram guarding yet another batch of fry (also free swimming). Having never bred these before I assume they will be alright left with the adults or should I siphon them out? The tank is 250 litres with the bolivian rams, 5 young bn and 5 pretty peckoltias in it. Quite a bit of driftwood and a few plants.
