  1. Its not really unless you make it such. Just a bucket or container filled with aged water, throw in a few leaves and or grass clippings, float some small bits of drift wood or similar ( drift wood adds tannins which the mossies like) Leave if for a week or so then keep an eye out for egg rafts. image borrowed from mother google These will then slowly get smaller as the eggs hatch and you should begin to see the larvae wriggling. Depending on the size you need as to how long you leave them before harvesting. As mentioned above, I sometime take the eggs inside in a jar of the water and hatch them inside, The newly hatched larvae are great for fry.
  2. In a perfect world it should :sml1:
  3. Look its not a contest to see who can out research each other. Every post you seem to try to outdo people with scientific mumbo jumbo. Does not really make me want to help you with your untold questions you ask. I simply say this as you will find that the mossies will lay more eggs if you have something for them to land on. Yes they may be able to walk on water but if there is something on the water surface to land on then they will most likely do so.
  4. Make sure you have a piece of wood or something floating that the Mossies can land o to lay their eggs. They cannot land directly on the water. You will know if you are laying as you will see little floating black bits that look like ash. They are the egg rafts. I collect these and raise them in jars. That way I can grade the sizes and feed out as required.
  5. Might get charged carbon tax then. LOL
  6. I agree, it would not be an issue. I have done so before without issues. The biggest problem is is the unability to have a constant CO2 Production without fluctuations that all DIY set ups have.

    Gravel tidy

No, they are a pain in the butt. Try growing plants and then keeping the tank tidy when you need to uproot the plants. All you end up with is a mess
  8. I use Dalton Propagating sand in all of my tanks except one which had black pea gravel. I like the Daltons. Its cheap, easy and looks good. Plants like it and so do the fish. Darker substrates do look good though.
  9. And Craft canvas wont clog up also?? Most fish keepers have filter wool. Its cheap and as Ira said it also will make water crystal clear. Bonus is the fry will nibble away at the bits that are all caught in the filter wool.
  10. LOL, So true. No generation was worse than any other. Their understanding was just limited at that point of time in the progression of mankind. The teens kids will look back and comment how the teens of today are not doing their bit, but they are trying with what knowledge they currently have. Seriously in the fifties, did the greenhouse effect even exist??? Not to humans knowledge at the time. How can you protect something from something if you do not know that something exists! :smln:
  11. Just like instant coffee. The cheap home brand is great on price but blimin disgusting to drink.
  12. Yeah, they are stupid roly poly carrots. I wont get them again. No need for tap water here. My back lawn is like a pond. Been pretty wet and hot here. Good for garden though.
  13. Yeah I just want to maybe get a pair. I am not talking a full high tech planted set up either. Just maybe a few Crypts and stems across the back with some stones etc. Tank mates would be some large tetras maybe? I am really just open to ideas at this stage. The tank will be this one. It was home t my Geos but they have gone now and I want to redo the tank. Was originally going to sell this tank but decided to keep it and get rid of smaller planted tanks as the smaller ones cost the most to run.
  14. I am looking at maybe setting up my display tank with some Central/South Americans. Now that my Geos have gone, Firemouths appeal as they stay reasonably small and can(?) be kept in a semi planted tank I think. Does anyone keep these at the moment and could share some experiences? How available are these? There is no LFS in my town and I have not set foot in one for several months so cant say I have seen any around.

    New Tank

Nice, BUT can I suggest you move the heater. Not very pleasing to the eye where it is. ( I understand it is a work in progress, Damn should read it properly) Would be nice with a dark background in my opinion.
  16. Sounds like WCMM to me Do they look like this? Borrowed that image from the net
  17. Feel free to message me if you need help.
