  1. how did you shape the poly? what did you use to seal the paint etc? what paints did you use? I am going to try do mine on a budget so trying to get ideas as to the easiest most effective way. The background for my tank will be quite tall so it may be a bit difficult. Thanks
  2. To be a real pain, do you have any images of the background before you put it in the tank? As mentioned earlier in the thread, I am going to be doing pretty much the same thing as you so was hoping I could get ideas and how to's from you.
  3. Correct. It is easy to see how fast they will go through that. Take a tank of green water and add one mussel. I guarantee that within a few hours the tank will start to look clearer. Within a day it will be almost clean. No matter what we do we cannot supply the quantity of food they require. No matter what the petstores try to tell you, they are not captive bred. All Kakahi sold in the pet trade ( or any trade for that matter) are wild specimens removed from their natural environment. http://www.niwa.co.nz/our-science/fresh ... ies/kakahi

    Worm IDs

Yea Joe is correct, the red ones are Lumbriculus variegatus. Grow them for food for you Natives. They will love you for it. At a guess I would say the white ones may be planaria.
  5. Looks like a reflection on the water of the Riparian growth.
  6. Watching this thread closely. I am going to convert my four foot tall tank into a native biotope like this also. Having done away with all my plants I need something peaceful to stare at and as this tank is the perfect dimensions I have kept it for this purpose. Its just a matter of getting around to doing it. I want to see lots of pics Twinkles
  7. Also, those worms you found on the bullies look similar to what I find attached to Red Cod caught at the Whanganui River mouth. Not sure if they are the same but look similar.
  8. You should have messaged me and I would have come along. I am pretty sure I know the stream you found these in. I have seen plenty of Inanga in that stream during the day but I tend not to hang around those parts of town at night time. Especially with a spotlight. Its not the wildlife you need to be wary of there. :sml2:
  9. Awesome find Stella. Now you just need to find some closer to Wanganui. Can I ask how you found it? Was there reports of sightings or did you just find locations that looked suitable and set the traps and hope for the best.
  10. Im getting ready to go.............. To work, Damnit. :cofn: Another conference I am missing. One day I will get there
  11. Hi,, firstly, try posting in the native section as you will get a faster reply. Stella would be the one you want to get in contact with. She is our resident Natives expert and has even written a book which may be of interest to your class. Maybe pm her.
  12. I got my copy. Then he proceeded to vomit all over it. Thank god I had read it all and thank god for the digital version.
  13. http://www.fnzas.org.nz/?p=1417 We have a file of available aquatic plants on the home page.

    piranhas

Agreed Ira. Piranhas are nothing to what these guys are. Makes me shiver just thinking about it.
  15. Ignore them. I like the look of this tank. Simple yet attractive to the eye. If it were me I would try find some other form of filter that was not so obvious. Otherwise this is a nice little natural looking tank.
  16. That is awesome news Twinkles. I look forward to reading your updates as you go along. Shame you were not closer as I would definitely be keen to get involved and lend a hand.
  17. Plant number one is http://www.fnzas.org.nz/?p=2698 Plant number two looks more like an algae to me. But I am no expert.
  18. This is what I see if I try to go to Youtube. The same thing happens to me for Facebook and Wikipedia. Other sites like this one and trademe etc are all normal. What has happened? The only thing I have done recently is delete cookies and history. Do that regularly but have never had this issue before. Help please.
  19. You are awesome. Thats it. Thank you
