  1. To answer your questions, No you cannot have too much CO2 for your plants but you can have too much CO2 for the rest of the tank inhabitants. We really need to know a bit more about your proposed setup. What type of lighting and what intensity? Ferts is dependent on what plants you will have and what lighting. If you are planting root feeders like swords or crypts you can get away with just something like JBL balls or a layer of mineralised substrate. If you intend on lots of stem plants you may need to think about dosing liquid ferts like Flourish Comprehensive or PMDD. Algae will grow in any tank regardless whether it is planted or not. It is more common in planted tanks as there is usually more light and nutrients to feed the algae. Get the balance right and algae looks after its self. Beginner plants. Well it all depends on what you wish to acheive. Again this comes back to what sort of lighting etc. Crypts are good plants to start with as they are easy care, but they do take a while to settle in and get growing. Stem plants are easy but are quite demanding of light and nutrients. Once you understand the basics then most plants are easy to grow. I suggest you start by telling us about your hardware( lighting etc) and then telling us what you wish to acheive. this will enable people to give you better advise.
  2. Sure have, This is part of reasons I spent some money and bought the camera when I did. Get the good stuff while I can afford it. I will have to watch the pennies for a few years now. I am yet to try take some nice portrait pics of Devin with my DSLR yet. I been to busy to worry bout the camera and I know that once he is home, he will be sick of seeing me with it. Ill make do with the Panasonic point and shoot for the time being.
  3. Thanks for the kind comments people. Yes Wok, he was a water birth. A pretty awesome experience to be a part of. Changed my first dirty nappy and got peed on.
  4. I know its only one but he has enough hair for ten. LOL
  5. Read a real paper then http://www.wanganuichronicle.co.nz
  6. Sweet. Hows that camera going Matt?
  7. As I mentioned above in my previous post, regardless of whether you add CO2 or not, it is a waste of time with the amount of light you currently have. What are the dimensions of the tank in question? Litreage gives no idea of the dimensions. It is the depth that is the info needed regarding planted tanks. The deeper the water the less light penetration. What are you trying to acheive? The reason I ask this is that there is many ways to successfully have a planted tank. It can be done with you current setup but you must understand the balance required and the type of plants you have must be known. See my low light setup here viewtopic.php?f=2&t=50880 CO2 is not the answer to all questions. Especially if you do not understand it does to your tank. It can be used successfully but it takes more than just adding co2. As you stated you do not know what ferts are therefore you should concentrate on getting the basics of a planted tank right before thinking about going high tech. Its not hard, it just takes a bit of understanding. Without it you are setting yourself up for disappointment.
  8. He is sharing a room with you Wok :happy2:
  9. Yes I find it very handy. I use it more often to just view things rather than photo though. I managed to drop a stone in it and crack the bottom  it still holds water but slowly it drains through the crack
  10. Here is my kit When I go fish hunting I take the fish bin to keep all the stuff together. Spotlight, Headlamp, polybox for keeping things cool, Gumboots, nets and buckets. My portable Sun My brother made me a bag for the battery so I can carry it easily. Its big enough to fit two batteries end up if I need long lasting sunlight. The cord is coiled to keep it out of the way when using nets. My photo tank. Photo tank in use Nets
  11. I returned to the stream to take some photos of the regeneration of a habitat. The scene looks much better than my last visit but still not in a state that I am happy with. My main concern is the height of the culvert out fall being too high for fish to pass. Although I was told by a person at Horizons Regional Council that the issue was being looked at, nothing has happened. As can be seen there is regeneration of plant growth on the banks. The Elodea Canadensis has continued to grow on the deep pool below the culvert. The stream bed is still very muddy ( I was sinking up to my knees in the mud while standing in the water) but there is an amount of wood debris building up which is providing refuge for the fish which are present The stream is abundant with small fish. Mainly young Inanga and Smelt. This makes me more concerned as these fish would usually pass upstream further but are restricted by the hanging culvert. There were no obvious signs of an Bullies, although this is not a definate indication as Bullies tend to be Nocturnal in behaviour and the lack of overhanging trees meant any that were present would be in hiding. Young fish can be seen near the top left of the above image. A large amount of algae has formed, almost carpeting the stream bed due to the lack of overhanging trees. This has exposed the water to almost all day direct sunlight. As the banks have been dug out it has created a restriction of the riparian growth that will be available for Inanga to spawn in. This site was known to be a spawning area for these fish. My next trip back will be with a spotlight to see what the life is like during the hours of darkness.
  12. Wood, did you say wood? viewtopic.php?f=17&t=51727 Looking good. The Val makes a nice background.
  13. It will deteriorate if it is cotton. If it is a synthetic it will not. Hair grass prefers sand or fine gravel rather than pea gravel. HTH
  14. My mate is fighting in the Rivercity Rumble this Sat night. He does Kyokushin. There will be Muay Thai as well.
  15. What type of cichlids are you meaning? African Lakes African River Central American South American There is a variety of different types
  16. Stella, this is the off Topic fishroom. :happy1: Anyway, Yes Hovmoller, all sorts of things wash up on our beach. Its quite surprising what you can find after a big storm. Most of it is rubbish, but some is quite interesting.
  17. Yes I am kidding. I was just pointing out the fact that the pronunciation of the name whether it is spelled with an H or without is Wanganui. The supposed H is silent. The Wanganui coast can be rough at times , like any exposed coast, but it also can be very nice. Its a real beach. I love it.
  18. Soaking it in vinegar will dissolve the outer layer off. Vinegar is an acid.
  19. The first issue as Josh has already stated is the lack of light. Plants need light. removing the airpump will do nothing to benefit the plants whatsoever in your situation. Plants need Carbon Dioxide yes, They use this to extract carbon from it using a process called Photosynthesis. The Photo part of that word means LIGHT. Plants will be going see through because they are deteriorating and dieing. A lot of people under estimate the light requirements to keep the average plant healthy. Secondly you mention the plant is a Flax type of plant. This to me suggests that it is not a true aquatic plant. Bog/Marginals tend to require far more light than most true aquatics. Hope that helps
  20. Not windy and cold here. We had the nations high the other day. The sea is as flat as Lake Taupo today when I went and took those pics.
  21. Thanks to the people who have emailed me images. It is greatly appreciated. Aponogetons. Who has them. We need some photos. Still on look out for images of Twisted Val and Indian fern(emersed and Submersed) Cabomba Also Pond plants. This site is not just about keeping things in a glass tank. Images of common marginal/pond plants are needed also. The Database is coming along quite nicely. I think most will be very happy when the end product is shown.
  22. I too agree with a kit thread. Nice pics people. Hmmmm, Im wondering where I should go looking myself. I have one of those big suns you are talking about Stella. I made u a special bag to carry the battery.
