    eeekkkkk!

woke up this morning and went to feed my little friends and was greeted by a floating zeb danio(damit).i looked a bit harder and saw that there was also a floating SAE and a lemon tetra, but worst of all one of my discus id dont know what happenend. i know the water should have been fine as only did a change the other day, temp fine and then i remembered that last night i had been playing around with my diy co2 setup(well a hotch potch one i was trying using a sodastream bottle an airston) turns out that while fiddling i had been pumping a fair amount of co2 in tank and forgot about it and went to bed. when i tested my ph thismorning it was just below 5, it normally sits about 6.2. im not sure if this is what did it but it seems highly likely to me!!!! the other fish were sulking in corners amoung plants and colour wasnt that great. in a mad rush to get to work i quickly did a 50% water change and disconnected the co2. the remaining fish seem fine now and all i can say to myself is you stupid idiot    would i be right to say that this is what killed the poor things?
  8. while browsing a similar forum of our aussie neighbours i came across the following theory. have a read i found it very interesting http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/l ... theory.php
  9. i agree. its cruel. some people just have no idea of beautiful fish apparantly they are quite popular in asia(although i dont know how accurate that is) has anyone come across pics of these before?
  10. this may be old news but have been surfing the net and came across these, mutated forms of discus http://www.angelfire.com/id/ttdiscuscenter/index.html through further reading of countless articles, it turns out that to form tis deformed , so called beautiful form(not in my opinion) of fdiscus the tails were contiually cut unti the fish nolonger grew a tail. yuk yuk yuk, well thats my opinion, what is evryone elses thoughts

    Peat???

hi all can anyone tell me about the benefits of using peat in my discus tank. i read somewhere that is can be used to help lower the ph and reduce hardness of water, ill be the first to admit i am not really an expert on water conditioning so any help appreciated :-?

  18. yeah im pretty good with gravel an always get asmuch crud out of it each time i vac the gravel. in regards to feeding i feed three times per day and each feeding is different . i feed prepared discuc meat mix frozen bloodworm dry flake freeze dried tubifex(although i have heard these arent that good for discus?, but mine love them) brooklands fish crumble and chiclid pellets any other suggestions
  19. cheer for your opinions guys, i got them all from nz discus so dont think there was any prob when babies, it seems to eat fine and as i said is always the first to take food from my hand. i did get a bout of white spot in my tank(presumably from a couple of neons that i added at same time) but he seemed to pull through that pretty fast,(would this have caused anythin) unfortunatly i dont have room to set up a bare bottom tank so with leave in planted tank, but the have plenty of room, im actualy looking at purchasing another for the tank at the moment
  20. anyone have any ideas ive got three young discus, all purchased at same time and size, but have one that just doesnt want to get big, ( his nick name is peter, as in peter pan). he seems to be eating as much as others and is the first to take food from my hand. but for some reason he has only grown a fraction since i got him, none of them had much colouration at time of purchase but all showing good colour now including him, or her. anyone got any ideas??????????????????????????? its got me stumped, only thing i can think of is that maybe he has some sort of growth problem. :-? :-?
  21. :bounce: youll have to let me know how it goes , although with the weather as it is it may not be much fu
  22. :bounce: wow luke that six footer must be an awsome sight, i will contact you sometime and i could maybe bring over a few beers and i could have a geez :bounce:
  23. well looks like i know what i will be doin next time i can spare some cash for petro(rather than on my fish)lol only thing is where the hell am i going to find the time
  24. imo i would think that if you had a build up of waste that had accumulated amoung the heaped gravel then yes it prob was the cause , did any of the other fish show much signs of distress, ie flashing and rubbing against gravel or rock etc, just out of interest, what sort of filtration do you use. how many tanks do you have running normally. we must meet up sometime.
