  1. if you do start changing things you run the risk of it going pair shaped if you don't or can't keep it going perfectly. If you leave it as it is it will be constant and won't change dramatically. If you ad buffers like limestone, crushed marble or shells etc it will be fine as they don't change things much and what they do is gradual so the opposite is also gradual. Adding baking soda can have good gains and easily have good losses so I choose to leave it stable as it's far easier (involves no work at all) and safer.
  2. i have always kept my africans in a ph of around 7.2 or 7.4 as they were the conditions that came out of the tap so i wouldn't bother messing around with it at 7.4, it's fine as it is.
  3. i've got a bit of that to but i'm sure it's not BBA. it's never go much more than a few spots on the glass
  4. yeah i could but not sure if that's going to achieve anything.
  5. so i just go to have a look at the tank & it has over extended it's jaw and is stuck again. I think i leave it for a day or two and see how it goes.
  6. it was easy, just punched it in the nose haha no i took LA's advice and after a couple of attempts it slotted back in 8)
  7. yeah generally, is behaving like she has a sore mouth i guess
  8. my cat loves lego or anything else left on the floor
  9. so i couldn't resist interfering as i just did a water change. before after
  10. 1000L for 1m3 therefore you have approx 243L. depending on where the measurements are taken is whether it is accurate, the thickness of the glass and it not being filled right to the top may reduce that by a few litres.
  11. cool thanks guys. when extended they look very fragile so will leave it a while and see how it goes. It is still stuck at the moment but hopefully it sorts itself out soon.
  12. i have noticed one of my alto comps seems to have a hyper extended top lip. it looks to be stuck out, it looks as if it's trying to sort it but cannot seem to get it in. there looks like a clear bone along the ridge of it's nose and seems to protrude a little at the top which looks to be keeping it lip extended. I expect it is due to fighting with one of the others, anyone know what i can do if anything to sort it.
  13. that's a good start. As long as you have enough filtration (aim for a rated 6 times tank volume per hour minimum) and hiding places (which you do) you shouldn't have many issues with it and should be over run with fry once the fish mature. They are good in ph of 7.3 and above, feed good food and do a 30% water change weekly and it should be easy to maintain and stunning to watch.
  14. if you got sandstone you could create holes with a dremel or similar as it can be a very soft stone. the paradise quarry stone is too hard for creating holes but good for the africans, when i got some they guy there just told me to help myself.
  15. it usually takes around 10 days to get here. If it's already here you'll be sweet, if not they may require it to be approved which i have no idea what that will take but it will likely be more pleasant having your teeth removed.
  16. nice, will be great to see in a few months when the plants are cranking.
  17. that's a bit more then my parents winter bills. Ironically their summer ones are higher, due to have the HWC turned on.
  18. that's good because theirs keeps the water far too hot so that must save heat for heating, Dad actually turns off the heating element throughout winter so their power bills are very low.
  19. there are cheap sources of fire wood which i think makes a wood fire a very good option. I buy 1 ton bundles of off cuts from a local saw mill for $20 each and cut it up on a tractor driven saw. It only takes around 45 mins to cut and load 60% of my 8x4x4 trailer so is extremely time and cost effective. I have also lately got a few unwanted forklift pallets which are easy to cut up but burn really fast as they are generally low density thin wood but still a cheap source of fuel. If i ever replace a fireplace i would do what i could to get a wetback in, it works really well in practice.
  20. i use kenfish for all my nls, all good.
