  1. haha yeah. "you have been very naughty now get in my tank. Clean it while you are there!"
  2. i send them via courier which takes around 24 hours, sometimes longer and it's fine as long as they are packaged correctly.
  3. i think that's a very brave move to rely on 8mm ply to brace a stand that's holding around 1800kg, if that's it i wish him good luck with that.
  4. it does sound comprehensive. what bracing does the frame have? what is most important with a timber stand for a tank that size is bracing. As the timber will be strong enough for the vertical transfer of the weight you really need to make sure there is no chance of the stand twisting. It needs 90x45 bracing to create triangle shapes in the frame connecting the back row to the front row and ends to centre. here's a pic of what i mean
  5. the sparrow almost crash landed then carried on where ever it was going so i guess so.

    Shellies

i have them in my tang community including tropheus, leleupi & altolamps. they are feisty little critters and deal with the much large tanks mates well.

    Ruby Red??

    i don't know but that's very cool
  8. i don't care what the odds are, it could happen and no matter how safe you are it can all turn to custard. :slfg: here's a couple of things that have happened to me in the last few weeks: 1 - My son killed two myna birds with one shot 2 - I was playing golf and hit a sparrow in flight with the ball doing an approach shot to the green. What are the odds of that?? i bet they are pretty big numbers to. funny you should mention the Cf's having no failures, i haven't had any issues with mine in 5 or 6 years so seems like they are very reliable. I also have a via aqua which is years older and it still goes sweet although it is noisy.
  9. because for all you know (assuming two filters on the tank) both the filters will fail at the same time if they are both running and then where will you be  for this tank i would get a FX5 and consider keeping the sunsun just in case, the FX5 can be bought for around $450 so not too bad for what you get.
  10. buy a second filter just in case one fails if it's that bad what parts have taken that long? i have had a couple of occasions where i needed parts and they were stocked at my LFS
  11. either way you go there are benefits and draw backs. If you add another filter you'll still have one running if one fails but you also have twice the piping, two plugs, two canister to clean. i guess it will be cheaper to buy a 405 rather than the FX5, why wouldn't you get another sunsun? I have all "CF" canisters and it's very handy having the same as you can interchange parts if you need to and spares parts i have kicking around can be used on any of them. I've never been a fan of building redundancies if you don't need to, it doesn't make sense to me most of the time. i don't think a filter is a life or death situation as if you have one and it fails you could easily go for a day or two without it, just don't feed and do regular water changes. i think which ever way you go it will work fine so there may be something that sways you either way.

  15. i was referring to a trickle filter in a AR980 which recycled oldy has and this is from my experience, i didn't read it or get told about it. when the pads or wool on the trickle filter clog the water (as you have stated about going to least resistance) then moves towards the edge but soaks through the next clean part of the pad until it clogs and gradually heads the flow further toward the edges as the pads or wool are too course for it to simply run over. eventually it gets to the edge so if there's a gap it will still flow through the filter system, if not it will raise the water level and eventually flood the hood out the end or sides of the box depending on which is lower so having a small gap is a good insurance measure against flooding.
  16. nah totally disagree. the water landing on top of the pads does not magically run across them as there is nothing to prevent it, it still soaks through the pad as fast as it can. as time goes on particles clog the pad which can reduce the soakage rate below the rate of supply at which point it needs an alternative route so the gap allows the over flow to escape. it's a good safety measure as i had an overflowing problem with the same style of filtration system when i added extra pads and flow.
  17. make sure the water can flow through fast enough so it doesn't flood. A good way to safe guard against that is making the pads a little smaller than teh box so any overflow can escape down the side of the sponges.
  18. i have not bothered to use them since i was a beginner. if i want to remove chemicals from the water i would just do a couple of large water changes over a few days, in my thinking that would be far quicker and effective than waiting for carbon to absorb it. to get crystal clear water you need to remove the physical particles from it so mechanical filtration is the answer for that. to achieve that with an AR980's filter system you need good filter wool and replace it regularly. i would look into putting a course and fine pad in each filter box which will catch most or all of the particles being circulated.
  19. cool, i haven't seen that before. i have had a female pick up another females eggs so two types of fry were striped from one female.
  20. they have a good website http://www.police.govt.nz/
  21. after researching and discussing with his breeder i had our border collie neutered because it reduces aggression, i don't need him to heard cattle. It also reduces the chance of him roaming looking for a mate and in turn running the risk of him getting run over, shot or what ever else happens to roaming dogs. I think it's a good thing to neuter dogs that aren't for specific breeding purposes.
