  1. always seal the board before painting & do all faces. I work for a kitchen manufacturer & the raw edges left over night in humid times of the year will swell half a millimeter or so.
  2. I used flourish excell which promotes plant growth but has a side effect of killing algae.
  3. I would suggest that the tank may be there for display to calm the angry crowds by distracting them from the rediculously long wait to get through the system & on to the plane, very clever. It is much harder to get bored when something is constantly changing in front of you.
  4. hi raven, nice to see another northlander. Im also in whangare. Smidey
  5. fair enough, this thread was the sky rocket that never ignited. WHO HAS THE SECOND BIGGEST TANK THEN?
  6. Hi all, here's a competition to see who can be the biggest, what size is your big tank? how many litres? would be great if you could supply a pic Smidey PS: Im not competing, I only have 200L.
  7. if you have a tank that is up to temp or use a bucket of water around normal tank temp, wind it all the way one way so it would be either very hot or cold. If the thermostat turns it on then you have wound it to the hot setting & cold setting it should not turn on. Thats my theory anyway & it may be floored but may be worth trying.

    driftwood

my driftwood is a piece of swamp kauri that I claimed from a pile of wood about the size of an average house from a local sub division, they were clearing the sites with a digger.
  9. Dont get to worried about "gravel vacing". when I was beginning I was soo worried about the water conditions being right, I would vac every week. I posted a question on here & a few members noted that they do vacume their gravel but only once a year. Since then i have not been so worried about it & my water conditions do not change due to it.
  10. Resulting reply from a puffer forum member with over 6000 posts: "Those pics look like 2 different puffers. The 1st looks like a FW Fang's puffer (runs $20-30 retail) & the 2nd resembles the SW stars & stripes puffer, not sure on the price for them." If you go to the puffer pedia you can see what they are, I am still after a puffer for my community but will not be touching these with a barge pole! 11. i have posted the link on the puffer site, will see what the experienced think about it
  12. I have a sunsun tank 1000mm. It has a spraybar filter system but is completly silent. I also have a canister running in it & that is quiet to but it is the noiseist part of it. It also helps if you store your spare filter wool around the canister. the sunsun has for water feeders that feed the water into the tank, they are submerged but can gurgle abit, I have stopped that by putting straws down the feeder.
  13. when I set up a new 200L tank, I added the internal filter from my original 1 1/2 foot tank for a couple of days & half the water from the small tank. I took a plunge & added 5 of my 10 fish on the 3rd day. The next day i couldn't stand it any more & added the remaining fish. I did not loose any fish at all & 6 months later I have only lost one or two, but that was due to getting stuck in the filter & a fight.
  14. I only have the two gauramis. They are indentical, one is slightly bigger than the other. They do it all the time, if they are cleaning their teeth they will have to feature on a toothpaste commercial soon they'd be soo clean
  15. Yeah, I have a 1000mm Sunsun tank. have had it since february & it has been brilliant. I have added a canister filter (CF1000 Aqua One) & still run the hood filtartion & the water is so clear I looks like the fish are floating in mid air. The hood is mostly alloy, the front section tilts up, middle is fixed as the lights are under it & the back tilts back to open up to access the four filter boxes. The only parts of the hood that are plastic are the end caps. The front corners are folded around, not butt joined. It has a pump, spraybar filtration system that IMO works well but also has rebates in the back of the hood for heater cables & external filter piping. It also has pre-drilled holes in the back of the cabinet for external filter piping as well. Others have said that the older versions were not very good but I have had nothing but great experiences with my tank & cabinet. Heres a link to a pic http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g183/ ... 9cb488.jpg
  16. I have also added a canister to my tank, I still use the hood filter as well. my Sunsun has a rebate in the hood at each end for the in & out pipes of the canister & the cabling for heaters etc.
  17. hi timtam I have had a look at these on trademe & reading the description above they sound very much like the Sunsun unit I have. I have found the premade tanks with hoods very good to use & like the tidy look of the matching hoods & cabinet. they are a good option & very cost effective. Smidey
  18. thanks, I have not been wanting any so havn't made an effort.
  19. my angels lay eggs regularly, then eat them after they have guarded them for a day or so. 6 batches of eggs & no fry yet!
  20. OK, I moved on the weekend. I did not do anything like what i said I would. I ended up bagging the fish, netted the larger fish first. Used two 20L containers to keep some tank water, emptied the rest of the tank until only an inch of water left in bottom so I did not have to chase the loaches (which are extremely quick when they want to be) & tetras around in the plants. Added a few drops of Aqua plus into each bag, added the fish & stacked the bags in a 30L chilly bin. I recommend you put a bag of hot water in the chilly bin which will help keep the temp up. Emptied the remaining water out of the tank leaving the plants in. Put the tank in the back of my ute & took the whole lot round to new house. Pumped two 20L of tank water into the tank using my canister filter as a pump, put the suck end of canister in drum & pumped into the tank via the spraybar so didn't have much substrate movement. Added the remaining water as if I was doing a water change then added the fish as per new fish rules, hung bags in for 30 mins etc. The fish looked as if they were all guna die that night, the neons & serpae neons had no colour & were swimming on an angle & the angels & loaches just sat on the bottom doing nothing. The following morning all was well with no casualities at all. Maybe they were all a bit out of it with the aqua plus from bags then tank for adding water.
  21. hi I'm moving house this friday. I have a 200L main tank. I also have a 1 foot & a two foot tank that are unused. I'm going to setup the two smaller tanks with water out of main tank in the new house then bag carry the fish to new house. I'll put the bags in buckets in the car, I have a total of 30 fish so there will be a few bags. Then empty out the main tank leaving substrate & plants in for transport. Pour the water from smaller tanks back in main tank & fill as if I was doing a water change. Fortunately I have enough heaters & filters for one each tank. Think this covers it Smidey
  22. well in that case I must have two males, they are identical only one is slightly larger than the other. They never swim apart, they are always putting their "legs" over each other (anyone know what they long legs are actually called?), maybe I have gay gauramis??
  23. If you put the plant mix down, be careful of what fish you intend to put in the tank. I believe some cichlids dig, my LFS had put the plant substrate & ended up having to remove it all as the fish dug it up which made the water cloudy, clogged the filter & generally made it look awful.
  24. I dont know much about curving perspex but I did price a sheet of 12mm to make a car speaker enclosure a while back & it was around $800 a sheet 2400x1200.
  25. Hi all, they are very gentle & careful when they do "kiss", it is not aggressive at all so I don't think it could be a territory struggle. they do it for 5mins or so about 3-4 times a week that i've seen & im at work all day. Im not sure what sex they are, any easy way to tell? Smidey
