  1. japanese rush isnt native to point out the obvious, good plants though more a margin plant - grows well with roots in water and leaves out etc pet shops abit cunning selling it imo Stella you should be fine with most native bog/reed plants providing tank gets enough light, when i use to work at a nursery there was a couple that we grew for local iwi & council which were been planted around the horowhenua that would of been all good but cant for the life of me think of the names sorry..do mudfish dig in the mud? may need to anker plants in?
  2. twice the size of its head per day or as much as it will eat within 10min twice a day i suppose. they really do eat like crazy as to where it all goes - probably squirts a fair bit out the other end
  3. cheers Luke, yea seem to be getting good results at 24 hours now and got the bottles full as alanmin4304 suggested  more for newts hence why dont want any salt with them...fish loving the leftovers though
  4. the bbs im hatching seem tiny i dont want to grade just rinse off salt water etc do the sieves work ok to just rinse or will tiny bbs go staright through them?
  5. nice frogs wheres the pics of the frog room
  6. add a peace of orange or apple for the flies helps keep them alive longer sorry not sure what to do re frogs, keep offering food.... sounds like your doing everything right to me
  7. yep smaller and apparently more prolific breeders and less prone to eating each other? could be a all bollocks though still i wouldnt mind trying them.....
  8. hatching overnight depending on temp - gets upto 30 C in there but sometimes i find best results the next day (36-48hours) does that seem about rite? theres about a litre in there and i chuck 1 tablespoon sea salt in, aged water - been over a year since i used it sorta forgotten the amounts and best temp to use  could fill it up abit more i suppose the one on right i had harvested from hence why so low - i put through coffee filter then suck up with syringe to feed out - seem ok but those bbs sieves sound even better as coffee filters block up quick smart
  9. dig a bucket or similar into the ground put a peace of wood or something over the top but with a small gap so they can hide under and put food like cat biscuits or something similar in the bottom  id be keen on some wild crix  even more keen if theyre the brown crickets which are hard to come by nz?
  10. thats awesome Mel basking light as in heat lamp (just a household bulb works) can get clip on desk lamps from hardware stores, bunnings, warehouse etc for about $15 put it over platform in tank - turtle then more likely to come out of water to bask and they should dry out in order to keep shell healthy taking outdoors even better but for what its worth its worth having a heat lamp in the tank
  11. shes on all day not sure wot the wattage prob 40 i regulate temp either with wattage or you may of noticed my high tech airstone which keeps lid slightly open so doesnt overheat or get too moist in there
  12. Below is my diy style bbs thing i made a couple of years ago - light for warmth and i turn bubbles and light off wait about 10 mins and bbs go to the bottom eggs float? ( thats the thoery  ) then i disconnect air tube at tap and bbs syphon out works ok but not the most efficient i seem to get some eggs with bbs, just curious if it all makes sence and if my theory is right?? any tips/criticism would be appreciated cheers
  13. some maybe out of season or maybe theyre not even relevant to the seasons as been kept indoors? or maybe they just brumate when they get to a year, i wouldnt worry though one of mine came out of her cave a few days after this post and the other is still sleeping looking rather cosey i must say (hasnt moved must of been there atleast 2weeks now) both mine got restless and started diggin around/trying to so i figured they either wanna lay or brumate, added some soil down one end of tank and they both dug caves and went to sleep (slakers id prefer eggs but anyway)
  14. cant say i have  some huhu beetles are smaller than others though but theyre pretty solid maybe not a good idea ive got waxmoths buzzin around all over the place woooopsy lol but theyre small i cant see them been of much benefit to anything
  15. moth trap light bulb with fan above blowing doward into a bag/sack etc moths/bugs go toward light fan blows em into the bag/catcher (something ive wanted to try just never got around to it) tj thorntons frog book has a moth trap with light bulb and reflector then bag with funnel below, moths hit reflector then fall into funnel/bag etc otherwise turn on outside light at night and have fun catching them you may get some juicy huhu beetles to if your lucky
  16. red ears are great - first reptile i ever owned - true machines when it comes to feeding gotta love em  love the name to
  17. one feeding a day or every other day should suffice. cant remeber if you had basking light & also a reptile fluro is a must really and or out in a pond even if just for a couple of hours every other day - cant beat natural sunlight was pretty good size for one year imo try ox heart diced up
  18. nice one Munch lookin staunch very nice dragon to chilli
  19. yea the 2 that went into cyber.... i mean hyber...nation  are kept alone so think its just nature taking over. id leave it be dragons do what they do but im no expert, they normally wake up 1week-3months later then i give a soak/bath then start feeding them up
  20. dont stress theyre fearly hardy reptiles beleave it or not feed less waxmoth - best feeders are roaches then crickets, locusts mealworms waxmoth treat only as repto said with salad make up enough for 2-3days put in zip lock bag in fridge (make every day if you desire - fresh is best and not so bad for the one dragon. also remove at night or mid avo if always there just becomes part of furniture. same with livefood if mine dont eat out it comes - leafy greens - nasturtian, mustard, clover are what i use as staple along with squash (blended), parsley, nasturtian mustard and dandilion flowers and carrot every now and then (about once eveyr 2 wks for carrot). also add beans, peas every so often weight will vary if he/she looks semi plump id be happy. less livefood maybe encourages the greens to be eaten more - also i drop greens onto dish normally the movement gets them going - dropd a nasturtian flower in the other day and 4 babies went nato on it - made me proud lol  one of my babies ate greens of kebab stick at about 3 days old temp will also play a big part on appetite, dont worry though some dragons will just take time and will eat more an more greens with age. re digging if its got a place to hide and the cool end of the tank is ok then i wouldnt worry but thats just me. all above just my opinion still learning every day
  21. bugger man theyre nice dragons you got (I'd still like to know where you got them  ) you mention drinking alot, does tht mean you have water in tank? if too hot and water in tank and especially if ventilation isnt good = bad seperating male and or skinny one may help as living art has suggested , hope it comes right for you man.
