    Knifefish

Ghost Knife/Apteronotus albifrons can grows to around 45cm so maybe just big enough? Brown Ghost Knifefish/Sternachella schotti would be the best as it only grow to around 20cm but haven't seen one for a while Banded Knifefish/Gymnotus carapo my favorite well in the 60cm so too big and dont recall ever seen one in NZ. Glass Knife Fish/Eigenmannia virescens male grows to around 40cm and female only half the size, very cool fish but hard to find. Clown Knifefish/???? gets way too big well in the 90cm when fully grown and easily 60cm. Asian Knifefish/Notopterus notopterus 35cm max but like all large Asian fish its very expensive and endangered. African Knifefish/Xenomystus nigri around 30cm, this would be my choice for the tank as its easy to find in NZ good size for the tank. getting less common. thats all i know but i am sure there is more if u think arros are boring then u will find knifes even more so as they're nocturnal so would be hiding most of the time. i like my nocturnal fish and have a nite light for them so i can feed then when others are sleeping

mybe i am just dumb but i still cant seem to find anything on freshwater and only DIY pages are : Tank Building Stand Building Plenum Building can someone post a link to get me started
  4. i personally dont see any stress in the fishes actually i stress more cuz the water turn to a cloudy color when u do this  but u do need to watch the oxygen carefully if u want to go with the algeafix option especially since u have fancy pleco and they demand high oxygen level as is. yes most definitely would go with flourish excel if $$ wasn't a factor. mind u barley straw extract is by far the most none stress way to do it and its practically impossible to over dose with.
  5. ur water should be clear with the UV-C light so like suphew said how old is it? just wrote a long post about how to get rid of hair algae hope it helps http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/help-a ... 15798.html
  6. ouh yeah the algeafix and ecofix i am talking about are by PondCare/ Aquarium Pharmaceuticals, cant remember which one but there is another brand that calls their stuff Algeafix as well which is rubbish.
  7. I've tried every possible way when it comes to hair algae as i go though this ever start of summer with my pond and here are my experience with the products. the only thing that works every time is algae fix [liquid form not powder form as the powder dont work as well IMO] , u will see it work overnite and will clear the problem within a week. afterwards remove as much as dead algae as possible then treat it with Ecofix which is made by the same people, this helps brake down all the dead and dieing hair algae preventing it coming back. [this is all i do now and it keeps the pond clean from algae for another year, till next summer] thing to look out for: 1. because it works so fast it will decrease the amount of oxygen in ur tank by taking all the oxygen the algae would be producing so its a good idea to add oxyblock or air pump. 2. anything that is classified as a weed will die like duck weed, hornwart, bladerwort........most stuff u shouldn't have in ur tank anyway. 3. be careful not to over does only use as much as recommended or a little bit less as this stuff is designed for out door pond use. also do water change in between doses which should only be once. Florish Excell is a great product but too expensive $15 for 100ml bottle and takes along time. i tried double dosing everyday for just over a week and it was working and the plants never look healthier but my bottle ran out and would take another bottle before the problem is fixed. [100ml bottle 200Litre tank] this is the option i would use if u have $$ to spend and time to kill. barley straw extract. this is another great option but once again takes a bit of time. just add the extract and wait it takes time for the chemicals to start working but once it does it would slowly kill the algae and once again clean out as much dead algae as u can and use Ecofix to take care of the rest. plain old barley straw bales. bought one just to try out in my pond and works great but is hard to get in Auckland [had to get my from silverdale] and takes by far the longest to work as u have to wait for the straws start to decompose in water which release the needed chemical to kill algae. other products like pondclear, cleanwater crystal, sludge remover..........etc i wouldn't bother as i've tried all of them and can tell u its a waste of time. hope my experience can help

    Fluke-Tabs

is it the stuff in the white cardboard package? that stuff was great i am glad they bought it back.
  9. i wonder what happens to these clowns when they get that big in NZ the biggest one i've ever seen here is just over a foot/12'. so who is keeping them all? :-?
  10. what type of knifefish are u thinking of getting? ghost, African or clown?
  11.   " its not they don't understand, they just don't listen"   i have both PM me if ur interested
  12. nope all my pairs breed constantly never taking a brake in between. my solution was to keep them in community tanks that way very few actually make it to adult.
  13. haven't done it my self but a lot of ppl here have and it has no real benefit except looking tidier. bad point would be it will be not as easy to clean the tubes if it ever needs to be and less flexible to move around if u ever decided u want to change where the filter goes. [i see ur also up late  ]
  14. nope, and for no real good reason either which is the case for a lot of tropical fish and plants they're a lot of different species and color morphs even "man-made" species with the smallest one [that i know of] only around 20cm diameter fully grown and some grow to well over couple of foot. like any fish its not hard as long as u know what ur doin. a lot of ppl over sea keep them with arros.
  15. not sure the recommended either but i have a 20mm under my 6' x 2' x 2'. better safe than sorry go for 25mm if ur unsure i dont think the cost would be that much different.
  16. i've been looking at this one for a while now and would be getting it for my 6 foot [800Litres] that i am working on at the moment. if u never used a UV-C system u would be amazed at what it does i run a 9watt UV-C in my 8000L pond and it makes a huge different if i turn it off the water would be green in a week.
  17. ur going to find bad reviews on almost everything u look at but of cause there are good ones too like this one: http://www.aquahobby.com/products/e_Atman_Canister.php if ur worried about buying a brand with bad reputation then stay away from Jebo!! nope, AquaOne use to be ViaAqua [which was not that long ago] and u wont find much complain about AquaOne, IMO they're by far the best quality for $$. and 50% off Eheim is that all Eheim products??? i'll be keen for a few things if someone wants to help me out here

    GARF site

cant seem to find anything on freshwater and i can only see 3 DIY pages and all of them are calculation pages :-?
  19. those are some really interesting links, thanks for searing them chimera. it was nice to see the before and after photo of the Mandarin so u know it actually works
  20. i've recently said this on another thread as well but why go for Jebo when u can get an Aquaone for the same price or less??? :-? maybe ur thinking overly complicated? i am always setting up on a tight budget so if it was me i would set the tank up with aquamix and gravel then put in what ever wood plants that u want in then fill it up and run with the equipment u already have for the mean time. it sound like u already have tank, light, heater and filter so it will only cost u around $20 for the aquamix to do this upgrading the filter and putting in a co2 system can be done much later on if at all. just last week i re aquascaped my 3 foot 200L tank. its very simple and hoping the hair grass would fill the ground.
  21. yep, have to agree there. i use my for pleco tanks and have a piece of pine in one of my tank for over a year now u differently see bits deteriorate but no so much it has reduced in size even with 100s of plecos munching on it 24/7 i've got heaps of drift wood from beaches and all i do is give them a good wash then leave them to soak until they sink which would sometime take a while.
  22. a new member here "purplecatfish" has one http://www.imagestation.com/album/pictu ... 2101791905. but personally i would get one of these if i was goin to spend that much on a filter. http://www.trademe.co.nz/Home-living/Pe ... 452184.htm and why go for a jebo when u can get aquaone canisters for the same price or cheaper? just wondering cuz i've heard nothing but bad things about jebo and bad experience with jebo heaters but i do like their air pumps
  23. couldn't sleep in................one in the morning [got work in 6 hours  ] always inspiring looking thought the saltwater section it gives me something to look forward to someday after my 10 foot freshwater [i go up a foot in tank size everything i get a new tank i am no 5 at the moment currently setting the 6 foot ] as i said i am a freshy so this mite be bit of a dumb question  whats the reason the eggs cant hatch and be raised? [clown eggs] is it because its impossible in captivity or just because its a community tank and too many predators? do they ever hatch or get eaten when still eggs. fantastic pic BTW pity i didn't join this tread earlier i missed out on alot of pics oops quarter to 2 off to bed
