  1. hi and welcome :bounce: T5s are already in NZ and a few of us here use them too but why not go for Metal halide lamps if u want some good plant growth. WOW how big are those 9 year old Kuhlis
  2. i have guppies in cold water all year round with temperature dropping to 15 degrees during winter nights.
  3. yeah thats what i keep coming across on the net and old post on MH seem to be the lower Kelvins. on an old post by Antwan he has a 4000K and getting good results thanks guys
  4. cool so MH is the way to go, which is good cuz i got 3 150watt coming 8) now what kelvin would u guys suggest to get for growing plants [freshwater]
  5. how do u mean? they eat them with their mouth of cause the apple snails chew them up the ramshorns only eat the soft decaying parts.
  6. ramshorn only eat plants that are dieing/decaying same as mystery snails golden apple snails most differently eat plants. i don't think we get any other apple snails in NZ just mystery snails sold as brown apple snails.
  7. could u give more detail there ira? like what u find to be the best what wattage over how many litres
  8. it should be alright but u really need to find the source of white spot as it only occurs when the fish are stressed or weak as white spots are around all the time not something that is introduced or can be totally removed from the water.
  9. just wondering what type of lights everyone is running over their tanks. bought or home made. MH or fluorescent T5/T8. i get excellent growth on all my 2 foots 50 litre tank with aquaone AL-20D [40watt] and run a aquaone AL-30D [60watt] on my 3 foot 200L and still good growth but not great. like to know what u guys have and the experience or out come and maybe what not to do?
  10. i would have thought the eel would eat the white baits. make sure u have good cover as those guys tend to jump.
  11. WOW absolutely fantastic. the tank has sure come a long way
  12. nice pic again but no does not help as u need to look closely at the fins and gill plate to tell the sex. how big is it? a large comet 20cm+ around $15 anything smaller $1 to $10.
  13. nope thats the lateral line, white dots or slight bumps on the gill cover [face] and on the top edge of the pectoral fins [front fins]
  14. nice pic. its impossibable to tell with that pic they should be starting to spawn now so there for if there are white spots on the gill plate then its an male.
  15. yep. also during winter times they dont tend to move as much which means they dont digestas well and pass air as well as they would in summer wich can lead to swim bladder problems and so on.
  16. yep thats the one  its a lot worse than u think cuz there is a lot of species of them that all look like that but all sold under the those common names
  17. we dont get L138 in NZ at least i've never seen or heard of anyone owning one. L077 and L137 are pretty much the same fish which is the common name= rusty pleco [link above] u can also get the L137 spotted version in NZ too. as what pleco is sold under the name bruno the answer is probably none but butterfly loaches are often sold under the name bruno suckers. thats why we hate common names  ouh yeah by the why none of these 3 plecos are an Panaque specie they are all Hypostomus
  18. Luke* pretty much covered it
  19. i am unaware there is a Panaque specie under the common name bruno. can u tell us the L number? i know rusty pleco is also called Bruno Pleco L077 http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing ... d=68773426
  20. yep i second that i set my on a timer for 12 hours.
  21. yeah trying to avoid that since i am not a member. hummm...
  22. anyone else? dont have to be an pleco expert here just click on the links above and tell me which one u think its the closes to.
  23. i used to get around 2 death by dropsy [gold fish from out side of pond]during summer times ever year until about 3 years ago when i started getting in to my fancy gold fish i have them on a very strict diet according to temperature. haven't had one since.
  24. now i've only heard of the terms T5 and T8 since i joined this site and have thought it was just fancy bulbs for marine in to recently. [love this site learn something everyday :bounce: ] now i am still a bit confused i understand T8 is our standard size tubes and T5 is thinner and T12 is bigger. i also understand u need special light fitting to fit the T5 tubes since they fall a bit short then regular size tubes. http://www.lrc.rpi.edu/programs/nlpip/l ... t5/pc1.asp my question is are all T5 range tubes have higher wattage then T8 which in return makes them brighter?? or is the same where u can buy 2 foot T8 tubes from 18watt right up to 24watt. thanks
