  1. Not sure why the one in Palmy has it... when we went in there rather a few of the fish were rotting corpses so unidentifiable anyway
  2. Obviously they don't have tags underneath their tanks to state what fish is in each tank..., bit silly really when they don't have "fishy" people working in their fish section... it might be morally wrong but at the end of the day, they should have a better system in their shop if they are going to hire staff that can't recognise fish... they should get the tagging system that was on offer a while ago with pictures of each fish species and info on the fish that you could slide in under tanks when selected fish were ordered in... that way their staff won't be making those sorts of mistakes and the store won't end up at a loss
  3. Awesome! Thanks for sharing the link snookie 8) Haha I think alot of people are caught by that when first owning clownies huh... I certainly did... my Blue Botia do the same thing, little buggers
  4. *Drool* they are fantastic... We have a gorgeous Royal Panaque, keen on getting another for the big tank
  5. Green Terrors are fab... just have to watch the aggression when they mature... they can live up to their name, we keep them, and well worth keeping 8) Nicaragua Cichlids are nice when mature, the males and females colours are fantastic.. we have a pair of those... they look nothing as youngsters but are stunning when they come into their own with colour... Quetzals (Red Heads) are more common now... they can be a real pain in the butt if you are keeping an aggressive community tank... We had 4 nice size ones, and one decided to try and carve everything up in the tank, including it's own species... you often see people trying to sell them on TM and hubby has had people coming into the stores asking if they are interested in taking their Red Head on. We have Geophagus steindachneri, they are gorgeous fish, full of personality... something a little different. It's great when it's time to hunt around and find what you want 8)
  6. Gorgeous axys Yeah Rogan is right, pebbles aren't so good for axy's, I have seen one with a blockage in the past and it had to be syringed liquid parafin to help it pass...
  7. Afrikan

    new tank

I have been told by the landscape suppliers that lime chip etc can have impurities in it, unwanted ions and compounds etc sometimes, so you have to be choosey and have a good look at it before purchase...
  8. Yeah it does depend on the pair, the pair we used to breed were right terrors once babies were free swimming, tried to crack anything in sight, with having nice blue rams and cockatoos, I certainly wouldn't want to try it out and find battered dwarf cichlids on coming home or something...
  9. I wouldn't even bother going into an Animates store for fish, the Palmerston North store was the first ever Animates I had seen... and when we went in we couldn't believe our eyes.. the prices... and the state of the fish... every tank had either fin rot, white spot.. and floaters... Seems it's not just Palmerston North
  10. My senegals are getting big, real fat and have got a wee bit longer... definately growing as in bulk... they get a fair bit of live food
  11. They are a hard case, often you won't see them with burrowing however at times you can see a face and little eyes peering up out of the substrate, definately need sand/fine substrate.
  12. It might work ok but I think it is a case of trial and error... (I wouldn't risk it myself) when the Kribs are spawning they might crack your dwarf cichlids... they especially dominate the tank when the fry are free swimming and follow mum and dad around the tank, that's when Kribs can really cause upset...
  13.  Brad.. so very true, I always had an inkling that the smaller Oscar was female, not sure why, just gut feeling, maybe the old womans intuition thing   I now have the Nics wanting to spawn in the tank this morning.. right next to the Oscars, might have to send in some peace keepers
  14. Welcome to the forums 8)
  15. Just thought I would share this lovey dovey pic of my 2 Oscars in display tank, after a good feed of live food (mostly locusts) and gourmet crickets the last few days they have decided to start a family... well at least give it a go  I always thought the smaller Oscar was a female and she confirmed it tonight, her tube is right down and you can spot some eggs on the slate... it's her first spawn and she's getting overly excited and getting a little carried away, old Beefcake isn't sure what to do with her
  16. You could try and butter up your lfs shop keeper and see if they do you a deal for a bulk purchase of each
  17. That is one species that is on my hubbys wish list... very nice fish 8)
  18. That looks awesome evil_elmo, very nice bunch of clowns 8)
  19. Mine love Pal Meaty Bites and moist Molenburg bread.. In the summer months I keep them in the fridge, they love it cool... keep them in general potting mix in ice cream container with a small round lid inside on top of the soil pressed down on the food, to keep the area firm and they love it, lift up the lid from the soil and they are everywhere, and breeding constantly.
  20. In the shops the Rummynose tetras go for roughly $8 each retail... and Bleeding Hearts are around $11.99 each retail... of course there will be shops that slightly vary depending on their mark up...
