  1. They are called cuckoo because they are very much like the cuckoo bird, the multi will lay their eggs amongst the cichlid eggs as well as the adult catfish trying to eat the cichlids eggs to start with... and the mouthbrooding cichlid hastily picks up her lot aswell as the cuckoos, she then broods them... the multi catfish eggs hatch quicker than the cichlid eggs in her mouth, and the baby catfish have a nosh down on the cichlids eggs... This technique is used to remove the burden of being a parent for the multi and it allows them to breed again sooner. We also have the large spotted Nyassae, I think they are far nicer than the small spotted variant. smidey - I am packing some size on our multis 8), haven't seen them trying to interfere in spawning attempts, as the lithos seem to like to spawn at the back of the rock work in this particular tank
  2. Wicked enclosure Really nice setup.
  3. If it is the place I am thinking of, then I have been there already a while ago now... 8)
  4. We have Nyassae and Multi's.... The Multis we have in with Lithobates... and the Nyassae we have in the Frontosa tank at the moment.

    new fish ?

I used to have dems in a very large corner tank, very heavily rocked, however, you may still find you have a substantial loss of fry... we did if we left the odd female to spit in the tank.. they gradually got picked off.

    new fish ?

Sounds like one of your females has spat, good stuff 8) Just be aware tho that they may end up lunch... hopefully you have a heap of hidey holes...

    hey ya

You can use an internal and a hang on the back together if you like... you never can have too much in the way of filtration, especially with african tanks, and with species that do better overstocked than understocked... well it pays to have more filtration... Personally a external canister would be great, however, you could get that later on down the track.
  8. How did the pommy guy manage to fit in the orchid David R? I don't still have my first ever tank.... I don't even recall what happened to it.... I used to keep goldfish in it many years ago...
  9. Afrikan

    hey ya

Yeah as Ryan said I certainly wouldn't for anything smaller than that, the whole 2 ft idea that others have come up with, I wouldn't ever recommend keeping them in a tank that size long term... they are very highly aggressive (males will quite happily cruise around the tank popping every male that happens to feature... if they choose)... Make sure there are HEAPS of nooks and crannies, you can never have too many

    hey ya

If you go dems, just make sure you have a good sized tank, with heaps of rock work and a good size colony...
  11.  Mince.... you fit the description Mince.. you keen?
  12. I know that there is the Tropheus moorii (firefox) (as Tropheus said) that have been imported... never heard of a T. duboisi (firefox)

Welcome Lush, from another african keeper 8) Keep us posted on what you decide and if you have any questions be sure to fire them at us in the cichlid section 8)
  14. That setup looks excellent stella... real impressive I love natives, but I just have Koura and my cute large school of Inanga
  15. Ouch, sorry to hear that, it is a nuisance when that happens... :-? Try 700-800 litres over your floor at 3.30-4.00 in the morning... :-?
  16. If pufferfishnz would like the topic split then a mod would be willing to do so, but it is entirely up to him/her. Not a worry David R, just seemed the topic was kinda taking a downward plummet, when it was originally a possum rehoming thread.
  17. Cats are natural born killers... alot don't kill for the food they kill for the sake of killing.. the thrill of the chase... speaking from experience... I have an Ocicat who kills mice and rats because he loves the thrill, even tosses them up in the air and parades around with his trophy.. even his eyes dialate... he's not really a bird connoisseur... Alot of people go on about ferrets, cat's are just as bad in alot of cases... Hmmm not sure how NZ as a nation would take to keeping cats confined... a law like that just wouldn't work... I think MAF's issue over the BT's is a silly load of codswallop.
  18. Guppies would look beautiful in there Dixon, they would love it 8)
  19. Ummmm I thought this thread was about rehoming this person's possum.... seems to have gone completely off track... It went from some of us wondering what the pet was, to suggestions on what to do with the possum (some a bit full on)...... to peoples thoughts on possums.. to now talking about what sort of weapons used to pop creatures off with... back to this possum that needs a home
  20. There used to be Wolves at Orana Park years ago, they were there when I visited in 1992.... yet they were old then, had been brought into Orana Park in the 1970's if I remember rightly. Beautiful animals, would have to be one of my most favourite mammals... I would own one anyday if it was possible... I know there are rather a few part wolves around in america being kept as pets... I remember seeing a clip on You Tube of a guys one who was babying a litter of 6 kittens, washing their faces etc, was so gorgeous to watch... The ones at Orana looked nothing like Alaskan Malamute, they were alot finer boned and rangey, more like large version of siberian husky... pointed features etc... if you had to imagine what they looked most closest to K9 wise..
  21. Afrikan

  22. Reticulated Python and any other species belonging to the python family... I LOVE Snakes 8) :bounce: Luckily I live in NZ or I would be all snaked up at my abode and probably divorced  And can't forget most lizards, iguanas... Komodo Dragon... Monitors... totally inlove with them... Oh and mammal wise.... Timber Wolves... I love wolves in general.
