  1. +2 to Barrie. Working in a LFS shows you exactly how their markup comes about, they arent trying to rip you off, they are trying to stay open. Maybe you need to establish a good relationship with a reputable LFS and get them to register your interests with their suppliers. At the end of the day though if noone wants 100's of the same fish you want, it aint gonna happen (unless you have a lotta dough to throw around)
  2. Our one at work likes to give the cons a run for their money, I havent had any other experiences with them tho so he might be the exception?
  3. Whitespot cure is pretty colourless, especially if it has been in the tank a few days. Quite surprising to hear that most shops dont offer some health guarentee, what if they know they have dodgy stock but shift them out the door quick? My local offers a 24 hour guarentee subject to acceptable tank mates and water tests, sometimes its just goodwill if you are a regular.
  4. I usually do that but if you undo the primer cap on the top of the filter between the taps and fill that to the brim then it should be all go. You may have to tip it on its side a little initially to get some of the air out and get it started then just a little shake every now and again for a day or so to get any remaining air out.
  5. Cant help on the meds sorry but chopped earthworms used to make my discus go nuts, that was the only thing they would *never* refuse
  6. lmao luke  we find that on the zx10 radars find it hard to snap ya (so why not all get bikes ). The speedo wont do 300 my partner found out (me not on it)
  7. Thanks guys, I wont be trying that
  8. We have a 1000W metal halide ballast here and I was wondering if you could put a 400W bulb in it without it blowing? 1000W is just a teency bit excessive for my 460L tank and if i can get away with not buying a whole new unit that would be fantastic
  9. What bank is that with? I left kiwibank as they have some insane loan requirements (a friend who earned over $900 a week couldnt get a credit card from them!) and went with ASB, they are working much better for me personally and gave me the loan I needed really easily, it was about half of what you need tho. Do you have any old stuff lying around home that you dont need anymore? Trademe!
  10. HFF in albany sounds like they have the sort of setup that you would be after, their sump overflow is in the middle of their big display tank with all the gear underneath hidden, not sure where the lighting comes from tho.

    Leeches? Flukes?

Will try to get one on monday. Havent tried salt yet, i figured a salt dose strong enough that would hurt whatever is on him is probably going to hurt him too seeing as he's scaleless? Might give it a shot just incase though
  12. Hi all, we have a choc ghost knife at work who has some quite wierd creatures on him at present. They have been there a while and are increasing slowly. They are approx 5mm long, 1mm wide and white (not see thru), like a super elongated oval- very much a leech shape. Some of them look to have a 'head' buried in its body yet others dont. They dont wipe off, you have to scratch with your fingernail and they do feel quite hard, the whole thing seems to be holding on quite securely, they arent dangling off. They are easy to squash and just turn into mush without any hard casing or anything. They dont seem to be bothering him nor do any of the other fish have them. I have googled fish flukes and leeches and they dont seem to look much like these do. Would a course of acriflavine or copper be the way to go?
  13. twinkles- the kids wont be taught anything about how to behave around dogs soon, the govt is axing it as it is 'wasteful spending'. wonder many kids will need to get mauled for not knowing how to approach dogs before they decide it is something the young ones need to know. I thought perhaps NZ's prisoners could give up a little (roast dinners?) luxury so our tax dollars could continue to fund the above?
  14. It may be dropsy? Its really hard to tell when plecs have it as they have no scales as such to stick out like a pinecone. I had a big plec get it and it took me ages to figure out what it was
  15. We have a few at work, they seem no less hardy than any of the others, they get cold tap water changes each week with no dechlorinator and it doesnt faze them one bit. Very neat fish, I say grab it
  16. Probably, but the mums arent very big, about an inch long.
  17. Dont i feel stink, my female guppies are only have 12 in one drop at the moment! I thought I was doing well
  18. The one down the road from you Dunc Glad she got hold of you Living Art, she had rung me several times to discuss her tank but she really needed someone to actually physically see it and sort it for her which i couldnt do. Its unfortunate that people get sucked into this sort of thing by the people that should be telling them the right stuff (a store that sells pets after all..), and other shops/ hobbiests are left to help sort out the problem.
  19. was a good day despite a few less people, poor fella on the duc left a big cloud of smoke we were lucky enough to have our bikes on display this year for some safe (and flyer free) parking
  20. The aviverm is a stronger mix than that stated on the discus forum. I worked it out at 1ml/22l of tank water. This is how i did it: Do a big water change + gravel siphon first (removes young worms), add mix, wait 48 hours (on various sites it said from one to three days so i went for the middle) and the do another big water change. Wait two weeks (life cycle takes a couple of weeks) and repeat. I have done this several times myself and i think many others have done it too with good results
  21. The supplier local to me is breeding them

    Ottos

I know they dont eat blackbeard  I dont have any other types of algae in my tank (because they ate it maybe?) and have never seen any other type so not sure what they prefer but mine are very fat little things!
  23. It's gotta be hard for her mystic, most men are just too 'small' *shakes head sadly*
  24. Cochu's are quite boisterous fish, they seem to pick on anyone and everyone IME so its possible they contributed to some of the Rams stress before they died?
  25. Sounds like a bit of bad luck sparky, theyre a very established strain so arent any weaker than tigers. Could be from a poor source though?
