  1. that is very cruel... fishs tails are like their legs, you dont see us breeding people with no legs! some people just cant leave well enough alone can they?
  2. i seeeee  im not expert on birds and their grit haha, guess that would up the ph then aye
  3. if you really do want it at seven you can add sea shells/ calciferous decor. they normally dont raise the ph too much but do keep an eye on it. im not sure what bird grit is made of but i think it would just be used because it could hold alot of bacteria?
  4. is there any forums specifically for aros? id have a look on there cause ive heard pop-eye (isnt it dropeye?) is quite common in them so im sure there would be a fair bit of info out there in all those little aro freak brains

    Amazon Tank

    i am totally, insanely jealous!
  6. well im not that knowledgable on discus, i have four babies myself but they are in a tank all to themselves. it took them a good 5 days or so to get used to me, i keep my presence to a minimum when they were settling in and now they come up to be fed! maybe they are sulking? ive heard of alot of other cichlids doing this. i say give em time, they will get more comfortable once they have sussed their tank out.

    hello from tga

also i live in te puke. if you ever need any help let me know. also if you ever need to borrow tanks/heaters etc in an emergency i can help ya out (got a spare 460L). pm me if you would like to chat further. what do you have in the two tanks/size (yeah ok... im nosey lol).
  8. if you have a cichlid tank with fish that will tolerate/stand up to them get them if you like them (like a SA tank, not a lakes tank). would go with something like a Oscar (that allowed tank mates lol), maybe a nice JD etc... i think their faces are quite cute! its really up to you as you have to feed them, look after them etc, you dont want to own some fish you hate the look of! big parrots can sell for like 50 each at some places, the average medium/small sized ones go for about 20 each. what setup would you put it into (what fish?)
  9. theyre a hybrid... mix of a severum and red devil (correct me if im wrong, my memory is rather bad). because they have funny mouths they cant really do too much damage. sorry i cant be of more help!
  10. mine are in a bare bottom because its just too darn hard to keep their water pristine with substrate. i do 50% daily water changes also, it is a much harder task to keep these compared to my others- with them its a 30-40% change a week. mine are getting fed 4 times a day, theyre approx 4-5cm
  11. its reccomended that you house one full grown discus to 40L, so one discus and rasboras would be good- thats if discus liked being by themselves which is not that case! also discus require a fair amount of work (im doing 50% water changes daily on my baby tank) also ive heard our water can be rather crappy after a big rain. gouramis are nice, go with most community fish. if you have $40 each for a fish go with apistos. at pickapet the baby ones are from my triple red boy who passed away due to un-known reasons. they are great little fish with alot of personality, rather agressive though i found mine liked to heard everything around so its best to kept them in a species only tank. why not go with a reigonal tank (is that what theyre called?) all the plants and fish are from the same reigion. might be pretty interesting. in the end its up to you, i suggest going to living waters, they have the best selection around IMO and if you see something you like do some research and away you go!
  12. who would i have to contact to get these little cuties? you reckon theres much of a market for them? will have a look into the gold rams, havent seen any down here so far but i doubt it will be much or a problem getting some. thanks rcon021
  13. a male fighter? theyre such cute little things and very bright so would contrast well. some little cobalt blue gouramis might look nice also?
  14. was thinking of getting back into breeding apistos, i want triple reds or orange flashes but have heard too much about inbereding so not sure how good the stock would be. they are great little fish, heaps of character, i reckun if my one couldnt fit in my Os mouth she woulda beat the crap outa him lol. its going to either be discus (unlikely), rams or apistos. im straying away from anything other than cichlids for the mere fact i dont think i can keep fry alive by myself. my white tiger would have been there around 6 months i guess now, people just wont pay 50 for a oscar these days. being there has made her super agressive too, went up to the glass and i had a 30cm fish charge me! having said that i dont like animal antics- i probably know more about fish that the lady there! the only place i will go to is living waters or pick a pet, the people that own those shops are good, genuine people who know their fare share about fish. ive thought about breeding before but never really got into it. being 16 and having spent all my wages from the last 2 years on fish i would like to try making a bit back- even if its going to be used to better their enviroment anyway. plus who can resist baby fish!!

    Amazon Tank

lol rogan... heard you were getting into breeding? angels wasnt it? ive got competition now dont i lol. youll have to come round some time to see my setups
  16. hmmm thats wierd, living waters is normally quite good, but since they changed owners im not too sure- hanz (sp?) used to own it, but sold it due to having ill health, they also own the pick a pet in papamoa but are trying to sell that also as the fish water is just no good for him. might have a look at animal antics (personally i dont like them, the lady in charge of the fish asked me how much litres a oscar needs!!?? fair enough, they have alot of fish but if you are to properly care for one (i had to give my white tiger to them) youd want to at least know tank requirments!!) ill talk to them and living waters since theyre the biggest around here. i heard about the club, was meaning to ring them but never got around to it. i wish i could go have a look at aquascopes tanks and fish! thanks guys
  17. oh im not wanting to make heaps! even if it was only $20 a month it would still be 20 less that id have to spend, i enjoy the challenge of new fish so itd be great fun to start up new tanks and learn new stuff, not to mention watching some teeny little wrigglers grow up if i was successful! never heard of aquascape actually, only animates, animal antics and living waters, plus the odd small pet shop. ive seen the fish place between katikati and tauranga (i think its around there), just never called in, might do so on our way up to auckland soon. thanks for your replies alan

    New Tank

the minimum reccomended tank is 55 gallons for one O (says the oscarspot) personally i would prefer 75gal for one. i suck with litres now as im so used to american volumes lol! id go with some of the cute little apistos etc if you are set on cichlids, heaps of personality in a small package
  19. im in te puke (tauranga) so we dont have much large scale breeders around here. you know me mystic! i sold you the lil apisto lol. i just wanted to get into breeding as i would make some money off the things i love so much! (it would also give me a excuse to get more fishies and tanks! ) id love to watch the parents looks after their babies, i watched a angel pair do their bits and pieces in a shop tank once for around an hour- that shop assistant thought i was majorly wierd! in my setups already i have oscars, plecos, sevs, angels, tetras, cories. i just gave away my boesmanis (*tear*) and my swords but do have 12 babies growing up now. id love to breed some of the big boys like GT's, jags etc, but i havent seen much market as people people prefer the mixed, peaceful tanks. i might look into the rams, eventually i want to breed discus but i just dont feel i know enough about them yet- maybe in a year or two. alan what do you mean by 'profile field'? thanks heaps guys for your answers

    which filter?

id read about the angel giving discus diseases/parasites etc, some advised against it but then some other super experienced people had no problem at all... will the discus be happier (theyre in a grow out tank at the mo) if i just have them (4), a largish school of tetras and the bottom feeders? i love my angel dearly so would be devastated to part with him will most definatly get the 1200L before they move into the new tank. sadly im not in auckland so wont have access to the sale thanks heaps guys, much appreciated!

    Any left?

hi all just wondering if we have any Parachromis motaguense also known as Cichlasoma motaguense or Cichlasoma (Nandopsis) motaguense left in nz, i was told we had some years ago, not sure if there would be any left as theyre not on out allowable imports list- any ideas why?

    which filter?

hey all, getting a new external for the 230L tank (four foot). keep in mind it will have discus and angels in it *hopefully* and ive heard they dont like too much current. it'll either be a Aqua one CF1200 (too strong?) CF700 or CF500. pricing is 140-110. im thinking the 700?
  23. about the filters- i think you will find the UG just wont do it- goldfish are some super messy fish so you want a good strong filter. cleaning consists of taking out the media and giving it a good wash in a bucket of tank water- not tap water as this will kill all your bacteria you want. with the light its really up to you, you will find a light specifically for plants benefical if you have them. most people just use lights for viewing purposes
  24. hello all ive finally decided that i want to start breeding fish to try and get some money back from all my setups (or more like ive been told lol). i have a spare 4x2x2 out in the garage that i will use, and a spare 2 foot if i need that also. now my question is- what is there a good market for? my LFS told me blue and gold rams and the dwarf cichlids. i would like to breed a cichlid of some sort as i like the way they look after their young, which would probably be best for me- id probably kill fry  id love to breed discus- something like blue diamond etc, our water is apparently not that great though, especially after heavy rain  my tanks have 6.5-7 ph. not too sure on the hardness though. i was wanting to get into breeding Parachromis motaguense also known as Cichlasoma motaguense or Cichlasoma (Nandopsis) motaguense, but have been told they are super rare, so probably not much luck there any other ideas? thanks heaps guys!
