  1. Good to see you got here ripper (I was the one you were speaking to on the phone). Did you manage to find where the leak was coming from yet and did it start again? Hopefully someone here is able to help you out

    clown loaches

Clown loaches are super sensitive to salt and most medications. I usually use a half dose of any med but even then that can be too much depending on the individual. I know furan can be used in double doses on plecs with no ill effects but im unsure if that would be the same for clowns, best to wait for someone whos trialed that to give you their opinion. I probably dont need to say it but nice clean water will help alot with the healing process. Good luck
  3. I think you'll find it a hard search to find a vet who knows anything about fish. The people here, especially those who have been in the hobby for a number of years would be able to give you very sound advice and i would trust them over any vet when it comes to fish. As dimebag said, what type of fish are you treating? Is Droncit pure prazi? If so many websites would be able to give you a few different, equally as reliable, ways of treatment.
  4. Girl golds seem to lack alot of the nice red striations on the face and the redness on the fins, also their dorsal and anal fins arent as long as males. Some people go by the squiggles between the eyes, apparently females lack these (mine does but i dont have a male to compare her to). Having more than one is probably a personal choice, you run the risk of increased aggession (ive found fish seem to fight more between their own species if theyre going to) and breeding.
  5. Probably to some extent but they wont burrow through all the layers and might be reluctant to if the sand is already gross  I always have a heap of malaysian trumpets in my sand tanks and they seem to do a pretty good job
  6. So neat to see the pics of everyones pups, especially the rotties! My partner has two girls (mum is 11 1/2 and daughter is 2 1/2) and we are thinking of looking for a nice boy for Asti (daughter). Only problem is she is bigger than every boy we have found so far except her brother  and we would like to keep some of her good size in the pups.
  7. Great ideas thanks guys! The hard part is putting the cycling deal into words that are easy for the kids to grasp so ill have to find a nice diagram of the cycle thats easy to understand (anyone know any good ones?) Will probably end up going with a simple basic community with most, if not all of the fish suggested above but still show them pix of different biotope setups.
  8. The best advice i got was buy the biggest you can get from a reputable breeder, there is nothing worse than putting in the cash for some bad fish to have them die and not want to keep discus anymore. Make sure you go for good shape (nice round forehead, fins in the right places, small eye (this means it isnt stunted) and nice and thick especially over the forehead) and if possible some poops. Also seeing them eat can be handy. Discusguru in auckland is my personal pick for discus, some of the ones sold on TM by some people arent raised in the right conditions and determines how healthy they will be. Good luck
  9. Hey all, i have to do a presentation to a local school about the general running of tanks etc (they are setting one up and need to know a few bits). Will be going over setups and what fish they can have etc. Just wondering if anyone has any ideas for things that can make it more interesting/ fun for the kids. Will be suggesting the usual community mix with glass cats, BN, siamese fighter, platys/swords etc (bright or interesting fish) but if anyone can think of anything else kids might like that would be neat. Was thinking a simple african community might be nice for them if the tank is big enough.
  10. Good luck! Im not sure how many others have them now (Ive got a male)as those who had bought some havent turned anything out since they got them quite a few months back. Hopefully i will have a few babies soon
  11. Not sure if evils hooking you up or youve already got some but let me know if you havent as we can get it at our local vet usually (though the people say availability is sometimes an issue). Good luck with treating it, theres an article in one of 07's aquarium worlds with my experiences on treating it.
  12. Definatly dont use your hands, being flicked with their dorsal spikes *really* hurts and their thrashing might make them a bit hard to hold on to. I found a big net was easiest to use, the pillowcase works to stop splashing but it seemed so stressful on them to get them in and then out. They arent hard fish to transport, they just sulk during and after the trip
  13. Sorry guys, missed that one with no internet! Might need to organise a big get together and sort our stuff out and try and get it running properly again
  14. I went but unfortunatly it was work (Bay City tent, a kwaka girl  ). Some good racing (and a few alright crashes), our friend Brownie came fourth overall for the day which wasnt too bad considering.
  15. Depends on their individual personality i reckon, ive heard of a few peoples who were so woosy they hardly came out to eat  they can be very protective of their caves though so definatly provide one of them out of the way of your O's general swimming area
  16. There are some at a local shop, looks to be a male in there also (or a very flash looking girl)
  17. Not suggesting a shotgun treatment or anything but just wanted to say i have successfully treated popeye in one of my wild apistos with Furan2 in its early stages
  18. Wouldnt want a bout of Camallanus would ya
  19. See if you can get a water report from the council for pukehina Liz, i had endless troubles with my discus when we were on the old supply because it was just plain filthy (hardly suitable for human consumption).
  20. This thread is about diseases and their relation to us OB, not how easy froggies are to keep. Definatly agree with Ianab, have to be quite careful round turtles too, they can give ya some good tummy upsets. Does anyone know if their intestinal worms etc are able to be passed over?
  21. What people reccomend to breed will vary with every person, each person has their own opinions on what fish are easy and enjoyable to breed. If everyone gave their opinions you would have so many fish to look at you would have a hard time picking what you wanted. Find a fish you like the look of and do some research to see if it fits your needs. If you could narrow it down to 'i want to breed a catfish species' or 'i want to breed a cichlid species' that might be easier to suggest something
  22. Did you get the note about those big bug things Liz? They could definatly be the culprit as they looked pretty fiesty
  23. I usually give it a couple of weeks. Its better to be safe than sorry, especially if your bioload is quite high.
  24. Might have to be a little more specific, theres quite a few blue and black fish out there. Do you know if it was a tetra? Catfish? Cichlid?
  25. I'll take a wild guess and say it probably would, like most of the other eel species they probably wouldnt pass up the oppertunity
