  1. Different strokes for different folks 8) I've never suffered a loss from water changing, touch wood  I do it to all of my mature tanks (4) but I warm the water for my fry tanks (3)
  2. I use cold water from the tap. I've been doing it this way for ages and have never noticed any detriment from it. I do warm the water for my fry tanks though.
  3. I'd test it again tomorrow and if there was ammonia detected I'd do 25% again. 6.5 is low but should be OK for your tank. It's more important that the pH is stable.
  4. Hi. My tanks are all tropical, sitting around 26-28. The temp drops to around 20-22 C after a water change and it's back to normal in a couple of hours. I do warm the water on my fry tanks though.
  5. Whats right?? I can only tell you what I do I don't think the rocks will do anything other than alter pH. Ditto that question. When I cycle tanks I'll do 25% or more, depending on the Ammonia level, every day until the Ammonia is gone then every second day until the Nitrite is gone then weekly from then on in.
  6. Hi grubster. Christchurch water is the best for fish keeping, no chlorine My water change method is this.....siphon out 30-50% of tank water and refill the tank with water straight from the garden hose. I've been doing it this way for over a year on all my mature tanks with no worries. I never use Stress Coat or other products. I'm not sure if it's even possible, but could the plastic bin be leeching toxins into the water?
  7. Don't feel too bad....at least you learned a lesson re: quarintining and hopefully others, and I include myself, will have learned how important it is also by reading your thread.
  8. Cool. Keep us posted 8)
  9. Hi Jen. I just found this and haven't had a good read yet but I think it will help you to give it a squiz http://freshaquarium.about.com/cs/treat ... nfresh.htm
  10. Yeah, I know  ...I'm a bit of a stickler for water changes  Sunday is put aside for tank cleaning and water changes and it takes me all day if I let it  And you're right, it doesn't explain sudden deaths. I don't think it was the water change causing shock either because it was only 15%.....unless the water was contaminated somehow? Just a thought. It is most likely that it's been caused by the Cardinals introducing something but, I'm sorry, I have no idea what.
  11. :bounce: :bounce: Excellent work Snorkel. Nice pic too.
  12. Hi Rozski That is yonks There may be people who disagree but IMO that's way too long between water changes. All of my tanks, and some have been running for years, get at least a 25% waterchange or more a week. The longest I've ever left a tank without a water change is two weeks and I felt guilty as  I've been told that I could leave them for longer but water changes are all part of the hobby and I enjoy doing them

  14. Hi Jen. That looks like the start of a fungus, probably at the site of a small wound. Treat him with Meth Blue in a smaller tank if you can but it looks minor so maybe a good water change and some salt in the tank would be enough. I would also increase your water changing regime. I do a minimum of 25%, usually 50%, on my tanks weekly. I've noticed fish with small wounds in my tanks but they always heal up without treatment. HTH
  15. That's a cool looking fish and a great photo :bounce: Are those lumps on the snout sensory?
  16. That's an awesome sight. Thanks for sharing 8)
  17. Hi Brookey25. I've recently purchased an Aquaone AR850 and the powerhead is way too noisy for my liking. I've researched them and apparently it's pretty normal. All my other tanks are glass boxes with glass lids and lights that sit on the lids. I use both internal and external filters and they are very quiet in comparison to the AR850. I'll be chucking the powerhead soon and setting up an external. So for my 2 cents worth, I'm with Imsmith and prefer the simple glass tank approach.
  18. Welcome to the forums :bounce:
  19. I just tested with a digital meter.... 7.35 give or take .02
  20. Is it on all your fish? Is it all over the fish? The reason I ask is that male Goldfish get white spots on the Pectoral fins and the gill plates when they are of breeding age.
