  4. Cookies… Chocolate or caramel?
  5. You'll soon find out if they're not a good lot for breeding I got a really nice male a while with the intent of breeding him, speant 3 mths growing up a nice virgin female for him from a good quality group of mixed guppies that I use for out crossing. Had to cull 40-something fry out of 60 or so in the first month due to bent or twisted spines. My guess is that the line was too inbread. He and all his surviving sons now live in a disply tank with no females and will never be used for breeding. The females I gave away to somebody who was warned of their history and had no intent of breeding them.
  6. Cull any fry that have bent spines straight away. It is often a recessive genetic weakness.
  7. The JBL pleco chips are good as they hae wood fibers in them. My BN also love cucumber.
  8. I do apologise if I have offended you Mincie. I just do not believe that other people’s threads should be jacked for the purpose of directly addressing a Moderator. [unless of course it is the moderators thread and you have been trying to get their attention without success.] I have a genuine interest in what people think on the issue of GE fish. I am also aware however that it can be a very sensitive and emotive topic. Due to this I would like to keep on topic. I believe that this is an important issue which is in sore need of being discussed and investigated rationally. It would be a shame if the thread got locked or deleted due to people going on emotive tangents. I do not think that it is appropriate to manipulate somebody else’s thread for your own agenda and was a little offended that your post appeared to do so. As for my opinion on the removing of the Red Danio thread: a) You did not ask me, your post was directed at a Mod. b) I think I’ll keep that to myself for now.
  9. Wow John. Very insightful. It must have been interesting to work in this field.
  10. Primarily GE fish. However if you wish to address the border topic of GE you are quite welcome to.
  11. Mincie, if you have a question for Warren it may be more effective to send him a PM. The intent of this thread is to discuss GE fish - by the nature of the subject GE itself (regardless of species) will be discussed a little. However I would appreciate it if we could try to stay on or close to the topic. This is not a sh*t-stiring thread. It is an attempt for intellectual debate about a topic which we are all going to have to pay head to as fish-keepers at some stage in the future. Thank you.
  12. Biggest winner? But don't yu want to be "The bigest looser"?
  13. Freaky fish I find your “Unnatural†comment very interesting. Selective breeding has been around for longer than the bible (Abraham even did it). Do you consider fish which are selectively breed for colour, size, fin shape etc unnatural because they do not occur in the wild? [Albino guppies, for an example will never bee found in the while because they are easy to see for predators and get eaten, they also have very poor eye sight which makes finding food or seeing danger harder. The genetic information is there but it’s simply not viable in the natural environment as in oppose to the unnatural environment of an aquarium.] You raise the issue of hybrids and hybridisation in your posts, which I find quite interesting. Clearly you are against hybridisation… maybe you would like to go into your reasons a little? In the same sentence as you speak about hybrids you also speak about mutation. Mutation itself is actually a very natural and necessary thing, some mutations are good, some are bad, and others are simply different. All in all you’ve raised some very interesting points, thank you.
  14. lol I think the funniest one I've done was 9L bucket for fish water breaking away from handle just as I was about to tip it into toliet. (We live upstairs all fish water goes down the bog.) I got compleatly covered but at least it happened in the bathroom not on the carpet.
  15. So fishboi, you believe it's ok as long as people know what they're getting? How, can we insure that ppl know what they're getting? If they were NOT infertile would you still be okay with them? You have no concern about the issue of GE fish itself as a principle? If they were not infertile, would you recommend some sort of licensing system to keep control of the population and make sure ppl know what they were getting?
  16. So Spiderweb, the reason you think it's "Bad" is because you don't trust the people doing it to make the correct decisions and do enough testing? Is that correct? Is that the only issue you have or do you have others? Who do you think could make the right decisions? Do you believe it could be controlled/monitored by some sort of international body? How could this work. Who, in your opinion, should be allowed/not allowed to make these decisions?
  17. Actually only a few people posted their views there and many of them didn't give a rational. What I would like to achieve by this thread is an opening up of the general topic and an investigation of why people have landed on whichever side of the fence they have on this very emotive issue. I have no wish to offend anybody I was simply very intrigued by the fact that there seem to be equal numbers on both sides. I wish to understand how the issue is generally perceived a little more as oppose to only seeing my own very personal – and possibly very narrow perception of the matter.
  18. GE fish debate – not just talking about Danios. What are peoples views on this very interesting and complexed topic and why? RULES: 1) Please back up every statement with a rational. (e.g.: “This is my opinion… , this is WHY I believe this…â€) 2) All opinions are valid and to be respected. 3) No “Bashing†of people who’s views differ from your own. 4) No personal attacks Come on people, I really want to know what people think and why. This is a matter that we have to think about – not shut away. There are pros and cons to both sides of the argument and it really is quite a fascinating subject. If we play nice and respect each other’s opinions we could really get some interesting discussion going.
  19. You didn't read the end of the post did you... no crack, pump was sihponing water out of air hose.
  20. I was. Amazing how fast a 5mm fish can be.
  21. Boyfriend decided to move tank over "A couple of inches" so he could move the TV into a better position.... I came home and asked why the floor was wet... he hadn't noticed. He admitted what he'd done and was immediately accused of cracking the tank…. (100L JEBO) Towels were placed on floor. Vivid was found and water level marked to see if tank was actually leaking or if he’d spilled and not noticed…. Water level checked. Lower! I freaked. Marked level then Boyfriend, flatmate and I grabbed buckets and nets to catch all fish and re-home them in other tanks… this took 2 hours. New water level marked. I’m completely freaking out by now. It’s a Sunday night, I’ve had a sh*t day at work and tank seems to be cracked but we can’t find where…. Then we see 5 baby swordtails, about 5mm long…. These take another 2 hours to catch. Plants, drift wood etc have all been ripped out of tank at this stage. Tank is still draining slowly. After last baby is caught I put net on top of tank. It accidentally falls down the back of tank… as I go to retrieve it I see the air hose happily siphoning out water at the rate of the pump! Boyfriend must have sloshed the water around a little and started a siphon effect. It’s almost 2am by now and I have NOT been a very nice girlfriend. This was a few months ago. Vivid makes are still on tank… when people see them and ask why we all look at the ground and reply “Long story – don’t ask†Boyfriend no longer complains about small bucket spills.
  22. /KA runs to get hmmer and nails.
  23. I have 8 unheated tanks in my fishroom. 5 x 2-footer and x small tanks. (Less than 1 foot) because of all of the other heated tanks in the room they sit between 18-24 degrees which my swordtails, WCMM, and Leopard fish all seem quite happy at.
  24. Gambusia are often called "Cold water guppies" just as WCMM used to be known as "The poor man's Neon". However in the case of Gambusia they are a genus of the same family [Poeciliidae] as Guppies. They are considered a pest in NZ and have caused huge enviromental damage. From WIKIPEDIA: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gambusia As to why they are a pest? These may help: http://www.gambusia.net/ http://www.issg.org/database/species/ecology.asp?fr=1&si=126&sts=
