  1. so what about the other people who have brought these fish what are they going to do? Will maf fine them too?
  2. Yeah I had it commonly with my clown's too, whenever I moved them had a temp variation etc they got it, nothing else ever did and I just added a bit of salt seemed to clear them up, white spot is one of the only ones I wont complain about if I fish gets it after I buy it.. However having a tank full of fish with very bad whitespot for sale in a shop is bad in my books
  3. Yeah the animates in Palmy sucked didn't spent long but saw sick dead or dying fish in most tanks was disgusted and walked out.. Sometimes fish just get whitespot and its just a thing have brought plenty of fish that didn't have it but the stress of moving etc they get it just a thought..
  4. lol i dont know if it helps but theres a pic of one of my females under my name.. And this is my male (her bf at the time) This is one fish ive brought alot of but they just seem to cark it no matter what I do.. I put it down to unhealthy fish looking for some good home bred ones lol but unsure if my wife will let me waste any more money on them
  5. this is baenschi http://www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/s ... php?id=632 http://images.google.co.nz/images?hl=en ... ages&gbv=2 Have seen some nice ones around the place the male should have some form of yellow on him and be different to red shoulders..
  6. daily water changes are alright for a discus breeder lol.. But if your quarantining for 3 weeks it would be a bit of a chore!
  7. lol it has definitely changed alot.. but i think it's awesome we got the chance to check it out before we left Auckland
  8. gelatin is from supermarket.. its the stuff that makes homemade jams, jelly, marshmellow etc set
  9. I make for my africans: frozen shrimp spirilina flake broccoli lettuce garlic peas gelatin and water to make it sorta stay together Freeze it and break off chunks and they love it its alot cheaper than buying all the expensive foods and the fish do well on it
  10. lol yeah your tanks twice the size of hers so 150W should take care of it Mind you more water tends to be more stable still the heater should come on when it drops and keep it up provided the heaters in the right place and there is water flow over/around it.
  11. IMO a 150W heater should easily heat a 60litre tank even with cold weather.. The thermostat should take care of it.. Seems weird it was stable at 26 and then you had to adjust it again? Keep a good eye on it but I cant see any reason for it to have dropped.. Your tanks not outside or anywhere really cold is it?
  12. IMO theres probably no point in having gravel in a q-tine tank or using an UGF.. If you leave the tank running with a filter heater etc then you will have to leave fish in there (or keep cycling it with ammonia etc).. Personally as its only a 28litre tank I would just leave it empty and leave some sort of media (or a sponge filter) running in another tank and just take like 20 litres of water from an existing tank and your established spare filter and then its going.. Wont be much effort at all and saves having another tank running.
  13. Yeah they are sweet with african's seem to do well in the high ph etc, mine breed regularly in my display tank I think your supposed to have a little piece of wood in there for them some of my tanks don't and they seem to do alright and grow and that but yeah its what people say Good luck with the brichardi they're cool fish
  14. 3 demasoni are a bad idea! I had 6 at one stage and ended up with 2 big males the biggest male scraps with every other fish and you need a few to spread the load.. I have 12 now and they're sweet hopefully they will start breeding soon! You could do a few maybe 8 demasoni and some electric yellows or something like that.. If I was going for brichardi or something like that and I was intent on mixing it with mbuna, I would get one only (or even a pulcher because they're alot nicer) and mix it with mbuna, that way it should stay relatively passive and not pair off and you can still enjoy the fish.. Pretty much any african stocking list is an experiment you get rouge fish or things and dont work so all you can do is try it and have a spare tank or divider or breeding trap or something to separate any fish that get beaten up (or beat everything up int he tank) so you can re-home them..
  15. We have used nz post couriers nz couriers and post haste most of these companies say they don't actually take live fish if you ring them, but we went into the depot and they soon got to know us (in Auckland) and well in Bulls everyone knows everyone so they just take them, haven't had any problems so far. Its really weird how much they change the best you can do is try, if you go into nzpost and they say no, then maybe call post haste and see if they have a courier coming thru that can pick them up? We used to do that in Auckland.. I think there is some sort of insurance (not for the cost of livestock) for the post cost only if they smash the box or anything but as thats only a fraction of the cost its hardly worth going for.. Good luck, shipping fish can be nerve wracking until you get the hang of it! Oh another thing we found don't just write live fish handle with care, write live tropical fish keep warm and handle with care, the only problem we had was one of our poly boxes (only labeled live fish handle with care) got lost and we rung around found it at some random place and they said not to worry they'd stuck the fish in the chiller to keep them cool.. Luckily we found them fast enough and got them out of the chiller!

    how stong?

YAY! Ive been looking for this article for ages and ages and ages and I finally found it.. It takes for ever to read but may answer some questions for you http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/a ... weight.php
  17. Awesome that will be a much better size for an african display keep everyone posted with what you put or plan to put in it
  18. Yeah I recommend the electric yellows discus probably wont thrive with weekly water changes, however the africans will love it.. There are a few considerations with malawi's though what size tank etc do you have?
  19. Most the serious discus breeders/keepers do water changes daily, the amount varies depending on their setup, ive been to one place that bred discus and he changed so much the fish were lying on their sides probably around 95%, but he had the storage for enough water to heat it to the right temp get the ph the same etc etc etc. The theory with doing a heap of water changes is to make sure any waste products don't build up and your fish will grow faster etc. Canaster filters are good unless your going to do a sump what did you want to know about them theres alot of threads devoted to just that subject.
  20. Im pretty sure thats the stuff I use and it has been recommended to me a few times as the only one that actually works, otherwise salt, these days I just use salt and raise the temp it seems to clear it off.. Even with my african tank when I had clown loaches in it I used a half dose of the whitespot cure and salt and cleared it up
  21. I think that was what he was implying that hes found alot of ways to kill a fish! Unfortunately im sure we all have
  22. I got a pair, both male and female had egg spots, the females were duller... and also all the young I have growing out have some from of egg spots too (they're about an inch).. Heres some bad pics of my male, second one is when i first got him the other one is pretty recent, if you have a spare female let me know hes one of my fav fish and hes still going solo so im looking for one for him
  23. Yeah have used decapsulated brine shrimp before, they're awesome they dont need to be hatched they're basically normal brine shrimp eggs with the shell taken off ie decapsulated.. They work well for me because I mainly have africans but other species of fish need the movement (ie of live brineshrimp) to stimulate feeding..
  24. Cheers for that, was hoping to pick up babies and grow them up in my setup I think at this stage if I added monsters like that they would eat everything.. I also would prefer to have more than one female as the males can get agro
