  1. Those look very similair to the peacocks that I got as red shoulder's from Wellington.. Any chance you can PM me and tell me where you got them from? Mine are also breeding like mad and im trying to ID them and decide what to do with them.. If they're hybrids then they might end up getting destroyed the females at least.. As for the injuries just watch them, if they start getting any fungal infections (fluffy) or white edges to fin tears (fin rot) then deal with it appropriatly its no biggie africans are pretty tough have had some come back from being bashed having no fins left lying on the bottom of the tank
  2. Yeah very sad he did alot for the hobby and even has fish named after him
  3. Is there any reason why your going away from the hang on the back filter? They are the best for smaller tanks as they don't take up area on the tank and actually add a little volume.. I don't think you'll find an internal with space for bio media most of them just rely on it living in the sponges and stuff, maybe just get one and jam some in, or cut down the sponge if your going to go down that road..
  4. I had 6ppm in my african tank, fish were all happy breeding, my only problem was water was green.. So I don't think its harmful? Mine was coming from cheap food that had very high phosphate levels in it, I don't use it anymore and the levels have dropped.. I think it can also come from decaying plant matter.
  5. lol yep thats probably why they say the Palmy water is so bad
  6. Hi and welcome The weather here has been as crap as usual! Unsure also why wetpets says your water is unsuitable, I just use tap water but I'm out here in Bull's, its what ive always done no matter where ive been living and never had any problems.. You could contact the council and find out what they stick in the water..
  7. Good choice man Africans are awesome!
  8. Id just persevere with the above.. Maybe give the ornament a wee tap over the tank and see if he pops out.. Is there anyway you can jam the ornament in the tank you want him in for a while to see if he comes out to his old hiding places?
  9. Food? Or carefully lift it out of the water a few times and see if he's interested in coming out..
  10. I was going to measure the water with the chemicals to calibrate the meter and then use the meter.. But to calibrate it I have to have some known thing to calibrate it against.. I have found the person selling identical meters to mine on trademe and asked them if they can source the solution as that would be ideal so will see how that goes..
  11. Thats going to cause some confusion and were going to loose those nice yellow "pulchers" when everyone goes out and mixes them all up I didn't think they had been officially reclassified as such, just that someone was suggesting they had been.. There has to be some way of differentiating by name between the yellow and grey versions?
  12. You could add 4 and if 2 pair off sell or remove the pair to their own tank and hope the remaining 2 are the same sex Otherwise you will end up with angels taking over half your tank if they pair off and breed.. Of course you could be lucky (or unlucky) enough to get 4 of the same sex and be fine.
  13. http://www.trademe.co.nz/Home-living/Pe ... 654471.htm I read the article posted recently and they suggested that brichardi and pulcher were in fact the same species but didn't realize they had been reclassified.. Anyone heard anything?
  14. Yeah think they were syno's of some description but I only had a quick look and cats aren't really my thing.. I hope you enjoy them man they were impressive.. I think the owner of wetpets has been the same for ages, when I first started keeping fish 10 years ago I used to goto the original wetpets when thats all it was a fishshop in a different location, it was pretty cool the owner had alot of cichlids and oddball fish because thats what he kept and liked, he even had a RTC in there that used to eat frogs.. They moved to the touch of country and went into other animals as well and I think the owners don't work in there much anymore maybe they just do the books from home or something it probably makes enough money now
  15. Awesome man how many females do you have ? Let me know when you have some for sale Regarding the skimmer I probably wouldn't bother your obviously doing something right if your fish are all happy healthy and breeding If you want to get nitrates down you might have to do water changes more often.. If it ain't broke don't fix it
  16. I got the PH meter second hand and the solution was to stick the probe in and then adjust the meter to read the value that the solution was supposed to be.. If I got some water measured its PH and then stuck the meter in the water set it to that value surely im achieving the same thing?
  17. Has anyone thought of a descent way to cal the optical type ones (has what looks like an LED on the end) I have one but no solution to cal it with.. Was going to compare it to ph tested water and try that..
  18. I know you can buy surface skimmers for freshwater tanks I have one here that I brought with all my tanks etc for a fluval have never used it or seen the need.. What are you trying to achieve? I think I read on the net somewhere the other day that some jullie breeder used skimmers on his freshwater tanks to eliminate any overfeeding or anything. Id rather just not overfeed and do water changes..
  19. If you use the existing filter and some of the water you will be fine.. Ive never worried about stones but if you wanted to change them too im sure it wouldn't do any harm Remember to top up the water gradually if your using cold or different water to whats already in there, good luck sounds like you have a good plan
  20. LOL yeah the man is a legend would be awesome to meet him
  21. Awesome man im glad someone got them They were a bargain whatever they were at that size and price.. When are you getting them? Can you get an id on them just curious as to what they actually are.. Would be interesting to know how wetpets came across them..
  22. He's a legend I doubt he would be coming out here would probably only be 5-10 people to meet with him.. lol
  23. The new baby is good didn't get much sleep last night though But getting used to it, unfortunately im back to work next Tues so that will suck im sure im going to get really tired
